Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of     1     world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. Many birds live     2     （comfortable）in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round,     3     some only stay there for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them     4     food.

Zhalong Nature Reserve is an important     5     （live）area for the rare red-crowned cranes. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world. Some of them live in Zhalong. Some people want to change the wetlands to make     6     （much）space for farms and buildings. This     7     （mean）there will be less and less space for wildlife.

This year,     8     （member）of our Bird Watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and do a bird count. We are now inviting secondary school students     9     （help）. We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds. Many people do not understand the     10     （important）of the wetlands. We hope this information will help them understand and make them actively take action to protect wildlife.

The Amazon Rainforest is known     1     “the lungs of the planet”. However, it now releases more carbon dioxide than it absorbs. This is the conclusion of a study recently     2     (publish) in the journal Nature. For the study, scientists took 590     3     (flight) over the Amazon.

So what has gone wrong? There are     4     (clear) fewer trees taking in carbon dioxide. More than 17 percent of the trees in the Amazon have disappeared since the 1970s. Meanwhile, farmers get rid of the trees by     5     (burn) them. Huge amounts of carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) are released into the air in the process.

The really worrying thing, however, is the southeastern part of the Amazon. This is because the logging(伐木作业) has disturbed the balance of nature. Fewer trees means     6     (little) moisture (水分) in the air,     7     makes the air drier. The heat causes forest fires to spread more easily. As a result, more trees are killed.

For the Amazon to become “the lungs of the planet” again, we first need to end     8     forest fires. It sounds possible but it won’t be easy. Since 2018, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro     9     (encourage) people to develop land in the Amazon. If he doesn’t change     10     (he) mind, scientists say, large parts of the rainforest could be turned into savannahs (稀树草原) by 2026.

Located in the southwest Pacific, New Zealand which is made up of two main islands and     1     number of small islands, is famous for its     2     (amaze) natural beauty and scenic attractions.

New Zealand is about the same size as the United Kingdom. The two main islands are 1600km     3     length, but only 5〜450km wide and separated by the Cook Strait. Over 75 percent of New Zealand is at least 200m above sea level with Mount Cook being the     4     (high) point. The Chatham Islands, 800km east of Christchurch, are the first lands on earth     5     (see) the sun.

Much of New Zealand culture is from Britain, including some cultures from America, Australia and Maori, along with other European cultures and Asian cultures. Large festivals in     6     (celebrate) of Diwali and Chinese New Year     7     (hold) in several large cities. The music and food of New Zealand are similar to those of Britain and the United States, although they have some     8     (extreme) special New Zealand and Pacific qualities.

Queenstown,     9     is the main center for snow sports in New Zealand, attracts people from all over the world to ski at the four mountain ski fields every year. In recent years, Queenstown’s hotels     10     (become) popular destinations for tourists from all over the world.
