Edinburgh summer festivals 2023
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Set up in 1947, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest performance arts festival. Only the Olympic Games and the World Cup sell more tickets and it takes over venues (场馆) all over the city for most of August. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society publishes a free programme every year containing most of the performances — which can be picked up in venues across Edinburgh before and during the event.
The Edinburgh International Festival
First held in 1947, the Edinburgh International Festival has taken place every year since. It sees famous figures from the fields of music and the performing arts invited to perform in the city. Traditionally the majority of events are classical music concerts, opera, theatre productions, and dance performances.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival
Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is the world’s oldest uninterruptedly (不间断地) running film festival. Threatened by financial problems last year, including the closing of its Edinburgh Filmhouse home, it is coming in 2023 as a downsized event showing a selection of films from around the world.
The Edinburgh International Book Festival
First taking place in a single tent in 1983, the Edinburgh International Book Festival was originally held every two years but became a yearly literary celebration in 1997. It invites hundreds of authors, journalists, politicians and famous faces from around the world to come to the city to speak about both their books and those of others.

【推荐3】Wedding Traditions
From asking “Will you marry me?” to saying “I do”, there are a number of traditions around British weddings.
Traditionally, it is the man’s job to propose. He should get down on one knee and offer a ring. However today it’s becoming more common for women to also ask.
Weddings are famous for being stressful. One of the best parts of the preparation is having a “stag” or “hen party” to celebrate the end of your single life. These men-only or women-only parties often take a whole weekend and are lots of fun.
To give them help and support on their big day, the bride and groom usually choose some close friends as their “best man” and “bridesmaids”. These people are also involved in the wedding ceremony. Churches are still a popular wedding location, but today many people prefer non-religious ceremonies in town halls, hotels or even in unusual places such as railway stations.
Traditionally, the bride wears a long, white dress, and the groom a dark suit. During the ceremony, the bride and groom make promises to each other and agree to be husband and wife by saying “I do” and exchanging rings. They are then married and kiss each other while the guests clap and cheer!
Following the ceremony there is the party or wedding reception. After dinner the groom, best man and father of the bride usually give a speech. Then there is the couple’s first dance, followed by everyone dancing until late at night. At some point during the party, the bride should throw her flowers and all the single women try to catch them. The lady who catches the flowers will be the next one to get married!
At the end of the party, the bride and groom leave to go on their honeymoon to enjoy their first holiday as a married couple.

Hibiya Park, Tokyo
A green island in the heart of Tokyo, Hibiya Park is Japan’s first western-style park. The 16-hectare grounds contain some 3,100 trees and 10,000-sqare-metres of green lawns and pretty flower beds. One of the parks must-see attractions is the great fountain. The symbol of Hibiya Park, the fountain is 30-metres wide and features a 12-metre high water jet at its centre. Autumn is an especially lovely time to take a stroll, as trees leaves turn beautiful shades of red. orange and yellow.
Central Park, New York
Possibly one of the most famous parks in the world. Central Park ranks alongside the Empire state Building and the statue of Liberty as a symbol of New York City. Not only was Central park the first public park in America, but it’s also the most visited. Set in the midst of Manhattan, Central Park’s 843 acres are filled with gorgeous fountains, monuments and bridges, alongside meadows and waters. Loved by locals, the park’s recreational facilities boast everything from skating and cycling to climbing and rowing.
Hong Kong Park
One of the world’s most unusual parks, Hong Kong Park blends modern design with the natural environment. Covering just over 8-hectares, the park uses flowing water in the form of waterfalls, ponds and fountains to link its different features. With mountains on one side and skyscrapers on the other, it’s also a great point for some striking photographs of Hong Kong. One of the park’s main attractions is the Edward Youde Aviary. And with an area of 3,000 square metres—it’s one of the largest aviaries in the world.
Hyde Park, Iondon
One of London’s eight Royal Parks, Hyde Park offers both world-class events and a peaceful place to unwind. Set along the serpentine, the park covers 350 acres and contains around 4,000 trees and flower gardens. Famous monuments include the Diana Memorial Fountain, famous Achilles statue and the Serpentine Bridge. The park truly offers something for everyone.
