In a village lying between rolling hills, a young girl named Eliza always longed for an adventure. She often gazed at the distant mountains, their peaks in mystery. One sunny morning, she decided it was time to set out on her own journey.
With a backpack of supplies and her loyal dog, Rufus, by her side, Eliza started on her adventure. The forest at the village’s edge beckoned. In response, she followed a trail into its depths. The air was alive with the songs of birds, and the glinting sunlight danced through the leaves.
As the day wore on, Eliza encountered a babbling creek where a bridge crossed its waters. With caution, she stepped on. Halfway across, the bridge groaned, threatening to give way. Eliza’s heart raced as she stumbled to the other side, her heart pounding with fear. She continued deeper into the forest, where she stumbled upon a hidden swamp (沼泽). Its lush grasses and wildflowers swayed (摇曳) in the breeze, inviting her to rest. Eliza and Rufus lay down, and she watched the clouds drift by, their ever-changing shapes inspiring her imagination.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Eliza found herself at the base of the mysterious mountains. Their towering peaks were now within reach, and her heart swelled with triumph. With Rufus at her side, she knew that the greatest adventure of all was just beginning.
With a determined spirit and the promise of endless possibilities, Eliza set her sights on the highest peak, knowing that the mountains held secrets, challenges, and wonders beyond her wildest dreams. The world stretched out before her, and she was ready to embrace every moment of her grand adventure.

It all started with a “Kindness Week Challenge” given to Brennan by his 8th-grade teacher, Ms. Watkins. Little did he know that this challenge would lead to a wonderful friendship with 84-year-old Ms. Ann.
Brennan’s promise to send his little attractive things every day for a week developed a habit of checking up on Ms. Ann and sending gifts regularly(定期地), long after the challenge was over.
Their friendship has now lasted for over five years, and Brennan still visits Ms. Ann every month with flowers, cakes, chocolates, cards and more.
They talk about everything from his high school life to his college goals. The pair has found that they share a common love of chocolates. Brennan’s mom, Traci, takes pride in her son. She said, “The best thing a teenager can do is to take care of the elderly. I’m so glad my son has added more sunshine to Ms. Ann’s life. I hope he always remembers the joy he’s brought her, and his fun talks with her, keeps his kind heart, and thinks of others.”
Ms. Ann’s daughter Emma, with her husband Gould, has a 2-year-old son. They are thankful for Brennan’s friendship as they cannot always be with Ms. Ann. Brennan’s kind heart has brought more sunshine into Ms. Ann’s life, and her encouraging words have helped to inspire(启发)him in return.

Moreover, the refrigerator was well-stocked with chocolates and ice-cream so I helped myself to all the goodies. That night I woke up with an unbearable toothache. No amount of aspirin could stop the paint.
When morning arrived, I had to do the unavoidable—making an appointment with the dentist. I arrived at the dental clinic an hour before the appointment.
After registering, I walked unenthusiastically towards a chair. I did not even bother to look at the other patients. Picking up a few magazines, I tried to read to get rid of my fear and pain, but I could not concentrate. All I was aware of was a terrible pain. The sight of patients coming out from the treatment room, with large pieces of gauze (纱布) sticking out from their mouths, only seemed to worsen my pain.
One of my New Year resolutions was made while I was shifting restlessly in my seat. I vowed never to taste another jam tart or take a chunky (大块的) bite of chocolate in the future.
When my name was finally called, I staggered into the treatment room. When the dentist asked me to take my seat and then open my mouth, I felt my heart pounding very fast. I was sure that I was going to get a heart attack..
The dentist informed me that it was best to extract the tooth. I nodded and opened my mouth and tried to think of other things. The next minute or so was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. I grabbed the dentist’s hands more than once. At first, he was quite taken aback and eyed me suspiciously. Then he warned me that he would have my hands tied if I were to repeat my antics. I did not think that he was joking!
After paying for the extraction, I walked out of the clinic confidently and headed for the nearest bus stop. I swore that this would be the first and the last time I stepped into a dental clinic.

One day after class? she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a normal conversation. After that day, she gave me much attention and it made me feel special. I started to work hard because she gave me the feeling that someone believed me, and my grades started to improve in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would walk home together after school. Her constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would check my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally came second in my class.
Then, after the sixth grade, she started to drift apart but still kept a check on me. By the time I was in the seventh grade, she hardly spoke to me, but by then I had become the best in my class. When I left school, I was out of touch with her as she never answered the phone when I called her.
Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths crossed again. I met her at a wedding. I could not help asking her, “Why did you stop talking to me?”
“You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree standing on your own roots, not depending (依赖)on others. Now here you are and I feel proud of you. You are your inspiration and do not need to look for a shoulder," she said. I could not say anything, but I smiled. I'll always thank her.

The flight on a small, overloaded bush plane to the South Pole was nine hours each way. So to the outside world, the Antarctic rescue flight of two sick Americans from a remote South Pole station sounded dangerous.
In an Associated Press interview on Tuesday, chief pilot Wallace Dobchuk and first officer Sebastien Trudel said they weren’t comfortable being called heroes and were just doing their jobs.
“This wasn’t as risky as it may seem because of proper training, planning and experience, as well as some good luck,” said Kelly Falkner, head of a polar program office. “The weather in Antarctica is fickle, but for the mission it had to be just perfect. And it was ideal at just the right time, changing to bad hours after the rescue,” Falkner said.
The U.S. National Science Foundation runs a station at the South Pole. But one person, and then a second, got sick. After much discussion, Twin bush planes were hired for the rescue.
The two planes arrived at a British base 1,500 miles away, rested and one flew to the South Pole and flew back with the two patients. The other took their two patients on to Chile, where they were treated before being sent home.
With 11 hours’ worth of fuel put in the plane, it’s no bigger than a delivery truck, along with survival and medical equipment. It got crowded and heavy. Dobchuk said that made it harder to take off and land. But they managed.

Minnewaska State Park
May 11
This field trip will allow senior students in Mr. Corzine’s Regents Biology class to experience the beautiful Minnewaska State Park, while learning about many concepts (概念) connected to our unit on ecosystems (生态系统). Students will be going on a two-mile walk from the Peterskill entrance to the park, down to the river and then back up to a lookout point. While there they will walk through different ecosystems and learn about the history of the park.
Students should be prepared to spend time outside:
·Wear comfortable shoes and waterproof (防水的) clothing, as there is a very small possibility of light rain. The possible rain date is May 12.
·We will be walking through grassy areas, so long trousers are recommended.
·Each person should bring enough water (at least 1 liter) , as well as lunch. Minnewaska is “carry in-carry out”, so be prepared to carry whatever rubbish is produced. A small backpack (book bag) is recommended.
·Also, the weather is pretty cool at the top of the Park, so please be sure to bring warm clothing.
We will meet at the entrance in the Gym Lobby at 7:50 and will set out at 8:00 am. We plan to return at 1:45 pm. There is no cost for this trip, as the Park will be supplying the bus for us.
