People love the view of old buildings in Paris, especially the Notre-Dame Cathedral (巴黎母院).     1    (fortunate), on April 15, a fire destroyed the spire (尖顶) of the cathedral, and two-thirds of the roof. Flames could be seen     2    (rise) through the top of the monument. The citizens in Paris gathered around the cathedral, praying for the hundreds of     3    (firefighter) who fought the flames.     4     was no wonder that people felt sad. The church itself after all, is a historical and artistic treasure.     5    (build) in 1163, it is one of the world’s most famous tourist sites, attracting about 12 million     6    (visit) every year.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is home to many     7    (religion) artworks, paintings and sculptures. Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, presented the building to     9     wide range of readers. He wrote the book to remind people of it, with the hope     10     they would protect the beautiful old buildings of Paris.

One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop,     1    (worry)about being late for school. There were many people waiting at the bus stop,     2     some of them looked very anxious and     3    (disappoint). When the bus finally came, we all hurried on board. I got a place next     4     the window, so I had a good view of the sidewalk. A boy on a bike     5    (catch)my attention. He was riding beside the bus,     6    (wave)his arms. I heard a passenger behind me     7    (shout)to the driver, but he refused to stop until we reached the next stop. Still, the boy kept riding. With something     8    (carry)over his shoulder, he kept shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy ran up to the door of the bus. I heard an excited conversation. Then the driver stood up and asked, “Did anyone lose a suitcase at the last stop?” A woman on the bus shouted, “Oh dear! It is mine.” She pushed her way to the driver and took     9     suitcase thankfully. Everyone on the bus began talking about what the boy had done, and the crowd of strangers     10    (sudden)became friendly to one another.

After the tsunami (海啸) hit India, many people who lived near the sea were greatly influenced. A lot of people lost their homes and     1     (unfortunate) some even lost their lives.

College girls     2     (ask) to collect money from their neighborhood. So we formed a group and devoted     3     (we) to collecting money for the tsunami relief fund (救济金).In our area, we showed a sign board, which read, "Please help the sufferers," to the people in the neighborhood and asked for     4     (they) help. They donated money, dress, rice, medicine     5     anything else useful.

A small boy who was on the way to his school came running to us and asked us     6     (wait) there for some time. After 5 minutes he ran to us with     7     small savings box. It was a plastic box which there     8     (be) many coins inside. He said he got the little box from his granny as a birthday gift     9     saving coins. And he wanted it to be donated for the fund. It was the real greatest offering of     10     (kind) collected by us. What a lovely boy and what a big heart!

A toy animal might not matter much to the average person,     1     for a child, it could mean the world. When 10­year­old Leon Ashworth’s mom couldn’t afford     2     (buy) him a toy panda he     3     (bad) wanted, he wrote a pitiful note on the toy’s box begging other     4     (shopper) not to buy it. What happened next    5     (be) so heartwarming that it would melt you.

The boy, Leon Ashworth,     6       lives in Liverpool, England with his mom, first saw his beloved “Pandy” at an Asda supermarket. Though he was willing to wait with     7     (patient) until his mom    8       (pay) on June 15th, the store’s staff decided to do something extremely thoughtful after they noticed Leon’s note. They decided to buy it for him.
