And so the idea was born. They wanted to build a trusted community of those who love the art of food and wine, with chefs and true foodies at its heart.
Ted and Joanne spent the next two years using all their experience—Ted as a chef in Michelin star restaurants, and Joanne as an international food marketer—to build a truly amazing app that included only the top restaurants and chefs. The Flavors of Hunan Cuisine — Hot and Sour
The many different tastes of the food partly stem from an unusually wide variety of agricultural products. For example, several kinds of chili peppers are grown. Chopped chili is made from vinegar, chili peppers, and salt. It is liberally applied in noodle soups and meat dishes to produce the sour, hot flavor they love.
Hunan Food, Actually Hotter than Sichuan Food
A common saying goes like this: “Sichuan people don't fear hot food, Hunan people don’t fear any degree of spiciness at all, and Guizhou people fear to eat food that isn’t spicy.” The Hunanese use vinegar with the pepper. It serves to stimulate the taste buds and make them tingle (受到刺激) , so you can better perceive the wide range of flavors and the rich variety of ingredients and spices.
Why Such Hot (and Sour) Food?
Perhaps the wet hot summers and chilly wet winters drive the people to eat sour hot foods. The Hunanese think that extra heat (yang) of peppers and other hot spices balances out the excessive cold and wet (yin) . Vinegar also packs yang, and along with helping with digestion, you’ll find that it helps cool (yin) your body on hot days.

This desire to surround kids with books isn't just in my head.A recent study has demonstrated that children who grow up with home libraries perform better later in life when it comes to literacy(读写能力),applying math skills to everyday life and learning how to use digital technology.Reading is a gift that keeps on giving, apparently.
The study collected data from 160,000 adults from across 31 countries who participated in the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies(PIAAC).The PIAAC measures adults'skills in three categories:literacy, numeracy(计算能力)and digital literacy.
Participants in the PIAAC were asked to estimate how many books were in their households by the time they were 16 years old.The average number in the study was 115 books, but the actual numbers would vary from country to country.Turkish participants averaged 27,while those in Norway had 212 and kids in the UK had 143.The study found that the more books that were present in the home, the better the adults scored in the PIAAC evaluations.
Homes needed to have roughly 80 books to have any impact on the teens, raising PIAAC scores to the average level.Literacy scores in particular improved when more books were available, though they became steady at around 350 books.Numeracy skills improved in similar ways to literacy.Solving problems with digital technologies also saw improvement, but the score gains weren't as steep as they were for literacy or numeracy.
Access to books also helped to bridge education differences. Those who grew up without many books in the home and received university degrees performed roughly the same as those who had access to large home libraries and only completed nine years of school.
1. What is the author's attitude towards children reading books?A.Unconcerned. | B.Doubtful. | C.Cautious. | D.Approving. |

【推荐2】The British are the most voracious(如饥似渴的) newspaper readers in the world.
They read newspapers at breakfast; they walk to the bus reading a newspaper; they read a newspaper on bus, as they go to work; and on the way back home, after work, they are engaged in reading an evening newspaper.
There are many “morning papers”, both national and provincial. The most famous is The Times. Different from what many foreigners believe, this is not a government newspaper. The various newspapers usually have their own views of the Communist Morning Star. The Labor Party and the Trades Union Congress no longer have a daily newspaper to represent them.
Bold headlines and a variety of photographs are features of the British press. Some newspapers, such as the sober Daily Telegraph and The Times, use photographs sparingly(节省). The more “popular” newspapers, using the small or “tabloid”(小报) format, such as the Daily Express, the Mail, the Daily Mirror and the Sun, use pictures extensively and also run strip cartoons and humorous drawings, some of which present striking pictorial comment on politics.
Besides offering features common to newspapers all over the world, British newspapers specialize in pages devoted to criticism of the arts and a woman's page. One feature found in many foreign newspapers is missing in British papers: the serial(连载).
Nearly all papers pay special attention to the reporting of sports and athletics. The evening newspapers are often bought because the buyer wants to know the winner of a race, or to get good tip for a race that is still to be run. There is no censorship(审查) of the press in Britain (except in wartime), though of course all newspapers—like private persons—are responsible for what they publish, and can be sued for libel(为诽谤而被起诉), for publishing articles that go beyond the bounds of decency(正派), or for ignorance of court. (e.g. calling a man a murderer while he is still being tried. Such cases are not often)
1. Which of the following does NOT serve as an evidence(证据) that the British are the great newspaper readers?A.They read newspapers at breakfast. | B.They read newspapers at work. |
C.They read newspapers on bus. | D.They read newspapers on the way back home. |
A.The Times is an organ (喉舌) of the government |

D.The Times pays too much attention to the reporting of political events |
A.bold headlines | B.various kinds of photographs |
C.striking pictorial comment on politics | D.both A and B |
A.Englishmen always take every possible chance to read newspapers. |
B.In Britain, newspapers must be carefully examined by the authorities(局) before their publication for fear that they present anything offensive. |
C.Few British newspapers publish libelous articles. |

【推荐3】From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don't know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day soon after school had started, I said to them, “Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean.”
The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, “Mr Holt, do you really mean that?” I said just as seriously, “I mean every word of it.”
During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, “It can’t be.” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick, in edition with woodcuts. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is, an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of “understanding” that can be dug out of a book!

Markthal
The building, the scale (规模) of which is impressive, is home to almost 100 fresh food stalls (摊位), shop units, restaurants and over 200 apartments. Opened in 2014, it was built near where Rotterdam was first founded in 1270. Besides delicious food, you shouldn’t miss its large walls and ceiling covered with images of flying fruits, flowers and insects. Named after the city’s famous scholar Desiderius Erasmus, the bridge is 808 meters long and weighs as much as 1,700 adult elephants. The bridge has a nickname—de zwaan (the swan). It does require a bit of imagination to see how this giant piece of steel resembles an actual swan, but if you look at it from above, it becomes a bit clearer.
Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Depot
It was born out of a desire to share artworks with as many people as possible and has gained over 150,000 pieces. Open since the summer of 2021, it has given visitors a unique behind-the-scenes look into the world of art conservation, art restoration and museum management. Most importantly, visitors have free access to the rooftop garden, which offers panoramic (全景的) views of the city.

There are various options, like a Metro train network, aboveground light rail, minibuses, and interstate buses that can quickly get you to Tepoztlan, Cuernavaca, Oaxaca and beyond. Unlike the proper Metro trains, which are very simple, with clear signs and maps, minibuses might be a bit confusing for first-time visitors.
Tokyo, Japan
The Tokyo subway system is the major public transport, which is shockingly clean and timely.
