Every Wednesday at 7 p.m., a group of runners from different countries gather at a bar in Shanghai before     1     (set) out on their 5 ­kilometer run. But this is no ordinary run. These people     2     (arm) with rubbish bags. The members of this group don’t simply run for good health. They do it for the environment     3     well.     4     (call) “plogging”, this new fitness activity began in Sweden in 2016 and was introduced to Shanghai in 2018. By the summer of 2018, just a few months after Rubbish Running China was founded,     5     (it) WeChat group had grown to more than 400 runners. To make the activity more fun for both newcomers and regular ploggers, Rubbish Running China also     6     (frequent) organizes longer weekend runs in the suburban areas. “We want more people to hold small ‘plogging’ groups and have     7     responsibility to organize rubbish running activities in their own neighborhoods,” says Eisenring,     8     founded Rubbish Running China. “ ‘Plogging’ is a way     9     (know) the people and the city a bit more,” says Robbin Trebbe, one of the     10     (late) runners to join the group.

Clara Hale was born on April 1, 1905 in North Carolina. In 1932, Clara faced the saddest thing in her life. Her husband died,     1     (leave) her with her two children. She     2    (get) a job as a babysitter for children with mothers too busy     3    (look) after their own children. During the next 25 years, she was a foster mother at to over 40 children.

As more and more     4    (problem) of drug abuse came up, more and more people would come to her door, holding a child, usually because the child's mother took drugs and either couldn't     5    wouldn't care for the child. Within six months, she had 22 babies in a five-room apartment. As     6    matter of fact, her apartment was packed, but she never said no to a child who no one wanted.

In 1985, Clara founded the organization     7    (call)the Hale House Center. It was an organization for children     8    mothers took drugs. At the Hale House Center, there would be about 100 children there a week.

Clara was a loving and     9    (self)mother to over 800 children in her life. She devoted her whole life     10    these unwanted children. She died on December 18,1992 with a feeling in her heart that she had changed people's lives.

Starting a wildlife conservation center is a necessary     1     important job, but it hardly brings money to its founder and so it is for Jane Thomas. She spent several years     2     (build) the Motley Zoo, and devoted herself to wildlife to protect in Redmond, Washington, but all money she made was spent straight back on the zoo. She was determined     3     (continue) to do her work, even though there was little money to reward her.

But things changed this year. “As crazy as it sounded, because     4     my efforts, I received a secret donation: $9,000,” said Thomas. She decided to use the money     5     was donated by a stranger this year to rescue more animals. She advertised the animal rescue in the street and received much support from     6     public.

Thomas said, “Ever since I advertised the animal rescue in the street, I     7     (attract) many people. Now when I walk in the street, many     8     (stranger) wave and even shout to me ‘I adopted (收养) my dog from you!’ I feel     9     (surprise) that people treat me     10    (well) than ever.”

For the past 13 years, Martin Burrows has been working as a long-distance truck driver. Spending up to five nights a week on the road can be a lonely business,     1     (leave) him with plenty of time to notice his surroundings. “I kept seeing more rubbish everywhere and it was getting on my nerves. I decided I had to do something about it,” he says. One day, he stopped his vehicle,     2     (take) out a trash bag and started picking up the garbage. The satisfaction after clearing a small area was extremely     3     (remark).

Before his time on the road, Burrows spent over two decades in the military    4     a vehicle driver. His service saw him stationed throughout Europe and also on tours in Afghanistan. After returning to civilian life, he was diagnosed with PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) and had to experience situations     5     his mental health suffered a lot in 2017. His     6     (contribute) in fund-raising for Help for Heroes led him     7     (meet) a man who used model-building as a distraction from PTSD. Burrows realized that his act of roadside cleanup had a similar calming effect on his mental well-being

By 2019, Burrows     8     (begin) using his free time on the road to regularly clean up garbage. Some    9     (passer-by) encouraged him to set up a Facebook group, which he called Truckers Cleaning Up Britain. Since truckers are so often on the move, the Facebook page acts as     10     means of raising awareness rather than a platform for organizing cleanups. Burrows expressed his intention to continue the cleanup efforts as long as his physical condition allowed, as he still found joy in the process.
