As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite supermarket, I studied the customer in front of me who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she had a tired look on her face-as if life had beaten her down too many times.

The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, rice, and potatoes. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases-well, almost. There were also lots of instant noodles and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off.

She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She finally took one out and turned it over several times, trying to find a price before finally turning to me.

“I’m sorry to bother you,” she began timidly. “But can you tell me how much this is? I forgot my glasses at home.” “Of course,” I said with a laugh.

When I finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back. “They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they?” I murmured sympathetically.

“Next!” The cashier called before she could answer, and she moved forward to begin her transaction. When the store employee finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened an old purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without.

One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier patiently deducted (减去) things with a pleasant smile, setting them aside.

The man right behind me complained loudly enough for all to hear, and the young woman’s cheeks reddened with embarrassment. I wanted desperately to pay for her groceries outright, but I knew that would embarrass her even more.

”Take your time,“ I added gently as she tried to decide what other necessity she could return. “I’m in no hurry.”

On our way to California, my husband Lee and I stopped at a restaurant to have lunch and stretch our legs a bit with our kids Jack and Jenny.

As we walked toward the entrance, an ugly looking doorman jumped up from a nearby bench and opened the door for us. “Good afternoon and welcome to Denny’s,” he said in a very joyful voice. In his hand he held a cup full of steaming coffee—which was inviting on such a cold day—but from the looks of the rest of him, it appeared that he hadn’t had a good meal or a shower in a long time. Obviously he was homeless. But regardless of his appearance, he greeted us as if we were his best friends, adding as we entered, “Today’s soup and sandwich special is a great deal.”

Once inside, my kids whispered to me, “Mom, he smells.” After we ordered our lunch, Lee and I explained the best we could, telling the kids to look beyond the dirt to the person underneath and within. As we explained, the four of us watched other customers approach the restaurant. They appeared unsure of the homeless man and many ignored him.

Seeing this rudeness truly frustrated me. When we were almost finished, I excused myself from the meal and went to the truck for my purse.

As I neared the front door, the doorman was opening it for a couple and welcoming them to the restaurant. They rushed past him and didn’t even acknowledge his presence. I let the couple come through first and then said a loud, and polite “thank you” to the doorman as I exited.

When I came back, we talked a lot. The doorman told me that the restaurant’s manager wouldn’t let him inside unless he purchased food. All l he could afford was coffee which, he said, didn’t count as “food” according to the manager, so he had to stay outside.

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly. “This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there. ”

“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”

“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowdent, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.

But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.

Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaical. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere. ” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.

After school things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes! Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, actually we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up with watering eyes and wondered what Miss Snowden meant.

Kelsey Golden works in media marketing for a school and usually takes her 5-year-old son, Barrett, around the neighborhood. All too often, they offer help to people in need and the boy becomes increasingly caring and sympathetic, especially to the homeless.

On a rainy Monday morning, Golden was working on the school’s annual yearbook on her computer at home. She was transferring photos from her phone to her computer when Barrett started browsing (浏览) her phone.

The boy loves the camera feature on her phone. He likes to look at his reflection, instead of playing games or engaging in other activities on her phone. But this time, Barrett didn’t just stare at his reflection. He started pressing the screen, swinging it around like his arm is a roller coaster.

He even mentioned seeing his favorite chain restaurant’s mascots (吉祥物) online, which was really unexpected.

Then, Golden received a message that her take-away food order was taking longer than usual-which was unusual, because although she sometimes ordered the food for her two older children’s lunches at school, that morning she had packed their lunches. The teacher furthered the confusion when she told Golden that her children were indeed eating their packed lunches at school-no take-away food in sight.

Golden’s confusion was deepened when she was playing with Barrett at the gate. But in that moment, a car pulled in. Golden felt more confused-the delivery driver got out a huge chain restaurant’s bag which had 31 cheeseburgers!

At first, Golden thought the delivery driver was at the wrong house. Then it occurred to her that Barrett had played her phone that morning, leaving her phone unlocked, so she went back and looked at the phone, only to find an order was placed at that time that he was playing with it. “That’s crazy! He really did this. ”
