But I do know this phrase “Let me know if you ever need a…” shows up a lot, in my inbox and surely yours, too. I’ve come to think of it as the eight most deadly words in selling oneself because that phrase is the death of opportunity.
Let’s consider the approach. These people are being standoffish. Rather than selling themselves, they’re shifting the burden onto someone else to make the sale. If I need a writer, I should reach out to them. If I need a story, I should ask them for an interview. If I need a customer service solution, I should ask them for details. “Let me know if you ever need a…” sounds like an invitation, but it’s really a shrug.
Imagine the situation where I’d assign a story to the writer who used the nine words, “Let me know if you ever need a writer. ”Just anyone who can string words together. I would have needed to be in a panic, so desperate for someone to contribute to our magazine that I’d stopped thinking about great writers or good writers, or even serviceable writers and simply settled for: a writer. This isn’t a situation that exists. The world is full of good options! We are not living in times of shortage. If we need a job done, there are plenty of qualified people to do it. Our question is: Who’s the best?
If you want to create opportunity for yourself, answer that question convincingly. The first thing to do is show someone you are the opportunity. Hiring you can help them. We also need to stop hiding behind ourselves. Get out in front! Sell yourself and your amazing abilities. Understand someone’s problem, and explain exactly why you are the solution. Avoid saying “Let me know if you ever need a…”. Instead, start with: “Let me explain how I can help you.”

D.Many people use the wrong opening sentence to sell themselves. |
A.Frank and open. | B.Unfriendly and proud. |
C.Unsure and sensitive. | D.Concerned and confident. |
A.The author is in desperate need of a writer’s help. |
B.There are very few great writers available nowadays. |
C.Anyone who can string words together is a good writer. |
D.The author isn’t interested in the writer using the nine words. |
A.Ways of selling oneself. | B.Tips for job interviews. |

Unlike the main way of thinking that you’ll only achieve passion for your work through finding the right fit with a line of work - what the researchers call “fit theory”, the researchers say you can learn to love your job and find meaning in it gradually (“developing theory”).
We probably hear and think a lot more about “fit theory” than “developing theory” because we’ve become used to it. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work,” said Steve Jobs. “And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”
Chen and colleagues examined some students’ career attitudes and expectations with regard to “fit theory” and “developing theory”. “People can achieve similar levels of passion at work by accepting either the fit or develo-ping theory. The key difference lies in how these results are reached: fit theorists(理论家) tend to self-select into lines of work that fit them from the start, while developing theorists grow into that fit over time.”
Fit theorists tend to value enjoyment at the expense of good pay, while developing theorists are willing to let enjoyment take a back seat to other goals, safe in the knowledge that they’ll grow into the role and find enjoyment over time.
Everyone has moments of being bored with their work, but it’s important to keep your thoughts focused on the bigger picture, your long-term goals, and why you took the role in the first place.
1. According to the “fit theory”, a person will_________.
A.treat his job as a great deal |
B.try to seek passion for a job |
C.find the meaning in his job slowly |
D.learn to achieve his dream gradually |
A.the romantic idea of “fit theory” |
B.the difficulty of finding passion for jobs |
C.the great pursuit of satisfying jobs |
D.the influence of “fit theory” on the business |
A.consider your situation as a whole |
B.try other new jobs as soon as possible |
C.consider your role in your work first |
D.start your work from the beginning again |
A.You Will Have Passion for Your Work |
B.You Can Learn to Love Your Job |
C.You Will Finally Achieve Your Job Goal |
D.You Can Get Enjoyment from Your Work |
【推荐3】In the first term of college, Professor Kelly lectured us in his acting class about the importance of taking the business of acting seriously. As I prepare to take on my senior year, I think back on the first term and I consider my seriousness and my love for the art of theatre. I’m pleased to say that for the most part, my determination remains as strong as ever.
Even after I’ve learned about the difficulties and the heartbreak that go with working as an actor, I know that it is still the right path for me. Something Professor Kelly said in that first acting class has stuck with me through these last three years. He said, “Every actor chooses to act for their own reasons—personally I do it because I have to. I have to perform. It’s who I am.” For as long as I’ve been performing, I’ve wondered how to best describe why I do what I do. Professor Kelly answered that question for me that day.
When I was little and first imagined what it would be like to be a real actor, I would imagine being known about by many people someday. However, I never actually wanted that. I act because no matter what is going on in my life, no matter how stressed I am with what’s happening outside of or during practices, when I’m on stage, I’m home and I’m me.
Many parents will feel worried about their children’s choosing to be an actor. Some will be surprised. My parents are just exceptions. They knew from the start that nothing was going to keep me from doing what I love.
1. What did Professor Kelly’s words make the author realize?A.She did acting out of love. |
B.She really had a gift for acting. |
C.She would face many challenges. |
D.She must work hard to learn acting. |
A.Imagining being an actor. | B.Being onstage. |
C.Becoming famous one day. | D.Being devoted. |
A.Content. | B.Supportive. | C.Concerned. | D.Disappointed. |
