It old the woman who answered the phone at the local stable (马厩) that I only wanted to sit on a horse. I didn’t want to go anywhere—no need to sightsee. I just wanted the experience of sitting on a horse. My idea of exercise was turning a page in my favorite book. Therefore, for me, to sit on a horse was a very big deal.
She said I’d have to do it with an instructor alongside. Okay. It was going to be a celebration of my sixty-fifth birthday. I wanted to mark this special day by trying something new.
The next Saturday morning, along with a good friend, who would not laugh but would record the moment of my achievement, I arrived at the stable and went inside. I was nervous—I began to doubt if that was really a good idea.
Nancy, my instructor, teacher and caretaker, walked over to greet me. My adventure-for-the-hour cheerleader stood about five feet tall and nodded to me with a smile that wouldn’t quit. The horse, whose reins (缰绳) she held, was introduced as Lightning. He was gray and looked quite bored.
I thought I could stand on a box and get on the horse. However, I was told to put my left foot in the stirrup (马镫) directly, and I was doing the hop-and-jump step, holding on to the saddle (马鞍). Once, twice, no luck. I was still on the ground. I was wet from tiredness and anxiety. Once again, I was thinking of using a box or even leaving. But Nancy was urging me on. I quickly bargained with myself for another try, and that was going to be it. Later, I could only guess that I must have blacked out because, in a magic moment, I was sitting on the saddle on the third try.

April has been a vet(兽医) for many years. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig(豚鼠).
She was in tears and asked April to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. April examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. My husband and I are fond of travelling. Ten years ago, we went on a 10-day trip across the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.

We arrived at our small guest house in Essaouira at around dinner time, and on our way to a local restaurant my husband started to feel unwell. He went back to our guest house while I had dinner with some friends.
When I got back to our guest house after dinner, I found my husband sitting on the bathroom floor, looking very pale. He had been sick about six times in an hour. He spent the rest of the night in the bathroom, getting very familiar with the house’s pipe. Our main suspect object was the argan oil—it probably didn’t agree with him.
At about 4 am, my husband finally managed to leave the bathroom and crawl into bed. He was very sick and dehydrated, so I went down to the reception to buy a bottle of water. When I got to the lobby, I found a young man behind the desk, who didn’t look older than 18, and explained to him that my husband was sick and I needed to buy some bottled water for him.
Our house was very small and basic and didn’t have a restaurant or cafe. The young man informed me that they didn’t sell any drinks at the house. Worrying about my husband, I asked him where the nearest shop was. I looked out of the window and my heart started to race. I didn’t fancy risking going into the unfamiliar streets of the Medina in the dark, all by myself. In fact, I was afraid of it.
