After a hard day’s work, I usually go shopping in the nearby commercial center to relieve my tiredness.

Last Monday, I was in the commercial center as usual and I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way to the coffee shop. I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch laid out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather obvious that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.

Then one thing that made me unforgettable happened. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man, a little confused, not fully understanding the request.

“Please help me give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the 20 dollars,” the young man said to the server.

At that time, the server hesitated for a moment and said, “I am a little scared for his behavior and appearance.”

“Don’t worry. I have the confidence that he is a kind and warm-heated gentleman. He is just in need of some kind of help and has a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I will be watching every second so that you will be completely safe at all times,” the young man added.

I wondered there must be some reason for the young man not to do the act of kindness himself.

One morning in December 2023, my co-worker Al’s email caught my attention: “Found: $20 bill on the floor in the lab at the end of the hall from the main building. See Alan W. to claim.”

Al’s email reminded me of an incident that occurred on Christmas 40 years ago. Before heading out for Christmas shopping that evening, I had withdrawn $400 from the bank, foolishly stuffing eight fifty dollar bills in my front trousers pocket. On my way to Oakbrook Shopping Center, I stopped at SportMart to look at skiing equipment for my son.

Returning to the car, I discovered the bills were gone. This was $400 in 1983—a huge sum of money! Feeling terrible, I turned my pockets inside out, thinking how I could have been so careless! I turned on my car headlights and desperately looked for the bills in the snow covering the parking area, but found nothing. This was the Chicago area. It was said that people in neighborhoods were not in the habit of turning in cash they found. At the thought of this, I was so sad. With low expectations, I returned to SportMart and started telling my awful tale to the store manager.

Hearing I’d lost cash, he interrupted, stating he needed to page(呼叫 ) the store quickly. Someone had earlier reported finding money. The customer wouldn’t say how much or leave the money with the manager, but left his name. The manager was concerned he may have left.

I stopped breathing as the page broadcast. Minutes passed, and I was about to give up hope when a man and a boy approached the manager. The manager pointed them in my direction. He was in his mid-thirties, with dark hair, a winter jacket, and a son about 10 or 12 He smiled, “The manager tells me you lost some money. Can you describe the amount and denominations(面额)?”

The class came to an end. John was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! John picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck!

The boys and girls in John’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.

Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! John looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Smith was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.

John decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would be most likely to be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.

He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right?”, he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. My colleague and I were co-signing an emergency financial aid check for a student at First Nations University in Regina, then he left for the day. As I was packing up, I noticed he had left his laptop bag there.

“Shoot,” he said when I called him. “I’m already home.”

“I can bring it to you.” I assured him. It was just past 4:30 p. m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later. It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague’s house, where I dropped off the laptop case and got right back on the road. Then suddenly the snow started -and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout.

The road soon switched from paved to gravel (碎石), forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow. It was extremely cold outside. I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911, but they said nobody was coming to get me until morning at the earliest.

It was now about 6 p. m. and dark. I stopped the car and texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returned. But he had an idea. “Pin your location on Google Maps and send it to me,” he said. I did, and a few minutes later he texted me back a screenshot of the satellite view of where I was. We figured out that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, in between two farms. It was now 6:30 p. m. We posted this new information to our Facebook community group, pleading (恳求) for anyone who knew who lived on the farms to help me get rescued.

Soon enough, though, people started chiming (发表评论) in on my post. They knew the farmer who lived there! I got a message from someone who was going to put me in touch with them.

At 8 p. m., my cellphone rang.
