I’ve forgotten almost everything about my early childhood except the concert, and my mother also remembers it.
When I was a five-year-old boy, I was learning to play the piano in a musical school. One day, a famous piano master was said to hold a piano concert in our city. Wishing to encourage my progress on the piano, my mother took me to the concert. After we were seated, my mother spotted a friend in the audience, who she hadn’t met for a long time. So she told me to stay in my position and then walked down the passage to greet her friend. My mother and her friend stood chatting happily for a while before the performance. Meanwhile, I was so excited to see the concert stage that I stood up and eventually made my way through a door marked “No Admittance” to explore the wonders of the concert hall.
When the house lights became dim and the concert was about to begin, my mother returned to her seat. And she discovered that I was missing. My mother said she felt really guilty at that time and that she said to herself, “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have left my little son alone in his place.” Confused and anxious, she looked around, but I was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, the curtain parted and spotlights focused on the impressive piano on the stage. To her surprise, she saw me sitting by the keyboard innocently playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano.
At that moment, the piano master made his entrance. Seeing me, a little boy, sitting at the center of the stage and playing the piano, he seemed to be completely at a loss. But then he quickly moved to the piano and whispered in my ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Leaning over, he reached around to the other side of me and soon added a running obbligato (伴奏). Together, we transformed a frightening situation into a creative experience. The audience had never seen such a performance form. They listened curiously and attentively, lost in the wonderful music world.

Many years ago at Christmas time I parked my car in the town centre on my way to the post office to post my Christmas cards. It was the last posting day for Christmas cards if they were to be received before Christmas. As I came out of the car park, I saw a young boy on the other side of the road. He was alone and as he was walking he was sobbing. I thought some bigger boys had perhaps bullied(欺凌)him and he was in pain, I had to go to his aid and see if I could help with his big sadness.
He told me that his big sister had bought him a combined Christmas present. It was a mobile phone. I would say it was his first mobile phone. He had been allowed to use it and only the first day he dropped it and cracked the screen! The little guy ate his heart out, tears rolling down his face as he told all this to me. My heart ached for him. It was clear he valued his present and knew that this was a lot of money for his big sister to spend on him. He’d been to a phone shop and they’d told him it would be £80 to get a new screen.
I had to help. However, it was very close to Christmas and I was nearly penniless(身无分文的)and waiting on my next pay cheque. I had some dealings with guys in the mobile phone repair shop, so I took him there. I knew the guys would have helped me out and my intention was to get the screen on the phone fixed and I would pay for it the following week. I knew they would trust me on this. I brought him with me, but the shop was closed! I had the mobile number of one of the guys’ but I couldn’t get in contact with him. What next? What could I do now?

Christmas was approaching, but I still hadn’t prepared a gift for my wife, Susan; Susan was good at planning things, so she would have thoughtful gifts for everyone long before Christmas. I always had excuses for being late for the preparation for gifs.
This time, in my defense(辩解), I must add that we had just moved to Italy and were still unready. While Susan was away on business, I continued working on the house and cared for Molly, Susan’s beloved cat. I kept Molly indoors most of the time and planned to introduce her to the outdoors slowly. But Molly obviously had other ideas. One day she rushed out and was gone. She wasn’t familiar with the new place, which worried me.
Northern Italy is reasonably warm, so she wouldn’t feel very cold, But she might have to handle other feral(野生的) cats. Our holidays would be affected if Molly wasn’t back before Christmas. Therefore, I made a poster with some words of Molly, a hurried drawing and a promised payback. Soon people visited me with many kinds of feral cats because of my unclear drawing or the reward(报酬)I offered. I could never turn away a hungry animal. So many cats moved into our yard soon.

“And that’s ‘The Ray of Hope’ for you!” Asta said as she ended her book review. She took a deep bow and was given thundering applause. I, too, gave applause. I was happy for my friend. Well, I was pretending to be happy for her. Deep down inside, I was rather feeling envious of Asta. She was always the one who makes speeches, debates and tells stories to others. Me? No! I had stage fright and was always the shy, quiet one who was never courageous to speak in front of others. I had never managed to do a presentation without stammering(结巴). Every time I saw someone making a speech, I would imagine myself in his or her place, receiving the applause and praise.
I was walking to the canteen with Asta. She, as usual, was looking at the script. She had been chosen to be the presenter for the National Day Celebration. I sighed to myself. Why could I not be like her, always loud and brave? If only there was a way to prove myself...
Just then, I caught a glimpse of a poster on the noticeboard.
“Minute to say it?” I read the poster out loud.
It was a competition where one has to prepare a speech about a particular topic and summarize it on the stage within one minute. This could be my big chance to overcome my stage fright! And the best part was, if I won the competition, I would receive a mini-trophy (小奖杯).
Without thinking twice, I grabbed a form and filled in it. I took a seat in the canteen with Asta and told her what I had done, after which she said that she had also signed up for the competition. Suddenly, regret hit me like a 20-pound hammer. I was competing against Asta who was the best speaker in the school! I was bound to lose! Why was I so ill-fated? I just wanted a chance to prove myself that I could overcome my stage fright.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________A grey car broke down on a gentle slope near the entrance of the grocery store parking lot. A long line of cars moved slowly around it, some honking(按喇叭), shoppers urgently trying to get their errands(差事)done during the December holiday craziness.
I looked around the offending vehicle, craning(伸长)my neck to catch a glimpse of the driver, a slight figure curled up before the steering wheel and wearing a dark green cap pulled tight.
“I think it's a woman." I told Lois, my wife, who sized up the driver and said. "These days, you just can't tell about people. Better to be safe than sorry."
I edged out into traffic. Lois, the more cautious one, was right. Holiday stress could bring out the worst in people. Across the nation, no one, it seemed, could agree on anything. Racial conflicts. Social unease. Crime on the rise. Neighbors acting like strangers. Peace on earth? I didn't see it on the gift list for this year. Not even in our tiny community in Pennsylvania Dutch country.
I was a few miles down the road when a thought stopped me; Was I missing an opportunity by driving past someone so obviously in need?
“I'm going back," I said. "Let's make sure everything's okay." Lois didn't object.
Minutes later I was back the parking lot. The car was still blocking traffic. Now I could clearly see a woman behind the wheel. I motioned for her to roll down her window, but she stared back at me hesitantly. I got it. I'm a big black guy with a beard, in a community where African Americans are definitely a minority. Finally, the woman rolled down the window.
“I ran out of gas and I just spent my last dollar on groceries." she said. I figured out that I had to push her car to the nearest gas station. But then I was hit with the reality of what I was in for. I had a bad knee, possibly facing surgery. No way could I push even a small car alone.

On Father’s Day, many of us try to find the perfect gift for our fathers or father figures. Our fathers take up so much space in our hearts that they will remain in our memory forever.
My father, Joseph Kane, is truly the leader of the band. He has a gift for music and sings like Eddie Arnold. Dad can pick up any instrument and play it and he has perfect pitch. He can’t read a note of music, but he can understand music by ear.
When we were children, he could sing a list of cowboy songs to put my brother, sister and me to sleep most nights. As we grew older, my father would organize a jam session on Sunday nights. My sister played the flute, I played the violin, and my brother banged on something that could play like drums. It was one of my most precious childhood memories.
Dad worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard until its closing. Then, he got a job with Grumman and worked on the first lunar module that landed on the moon. In his spare time, he would do income taxes for all my aunts and uncles. Although he had no formal training, he was talented in math so he helped us through tough homework assignments, and I could guarantee he never cheated on his taxes or anyone else’s.
On Sundays in the early 1960s, we would take a ride out to the countryside to see horse farms. That was the days when we got to eat out. Whenever I smelled delicious food, it brought me back to those Sundays.
My dad loved Halloween. I thought it was because he loved candies. As the years went by, I got married and had children. When I saw him hand out candies at my front door, I suddenly realized that he did not love candies but he did love all children, especially his grandchildren. He spent time coloring with them, singing to them and just enjoying their innocence. He had few friends. His family was his world.

A few years ago, I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot all over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips, I came out of the airport to take a bus to downtown as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…
That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.
Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, “Hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?”
I remember thinking to myself — this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, “Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?” “No, I’m not here for vacation, and I don’t have parents,” he shook his head. “I’m here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I’m on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago.”
