Stan Lee was born in 1922. When he was just 17,he got a job at a company that made comic books. Although the salary was beyond his imagination, Mr.Lee got tired of it. Most superheroes were strong and smart and always knew the right thing to do.Mr. Lee wanted to have a chance to create new superheroes that had weaknesses. Mr.Lee didn’t create the heroes by himself. He worked with artists to come up with the ideas. Some people thought the comic books would not sell well and that the readers would be unhappy to see superheroes lead a normal life.

Mr. Lee was able to create characters that were different from anything that had been seen in comic books before. The Incredible Hulk was a really nice guy until he got angry. Spider-Man was never sure he was doing the right thing, but he always seemed to have something funny to say to the bad guys. Mr.Lee made it okay for comic book heroes to be like common people. He also had the clever idea of having his comic book heroes appear in each other’s stories. For example, Spider-Man might show up in a Fantastic Four story. This made readers feel shocked. He also brought them into the real world. Batman and Superman lived in made-up cities. But Mr.Lee decided that Peter Parker (who turns into Spider-Man) should live in New York City.

In 1980, Mr.Lee moved to California to promote his movies. He played a small part in most of these movies, usually showing up on screen for just a few seconds to make audience feel the super heroes really exist in their lives. He wanted to try and get his superheroes onto TV and into the movies. He didn’t have too much luck at first, although The Incredible Hulk became popular TV shows. But after the success of The X-Men and Spider-Man movies in the early 2000s,movies with Marvel heroes began to be favored by millions of fans. Marvel movies have now earned over $24 billion. Mr.Lee is no longer with us, but the heroes he created live on.

【推荐1】When it comes to romance, no one does it better than the French. This is believed to be true of their movies, too. Unlike the Hollywood blockbusters (大片) you may be used to, French films are "usually a more artistic statement about being in the world" , noted The Guardian.

From Oct 8 to Oct 29, in cooperation with the French embassy in China, the China Film Archive and China National Film Museum are presenting classic and critically acclaimed (备受赞誉的) French movies, including Le Havre (2011), Mia et le Migou (2008), and Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902).

Sha Dan, curator (策划人) of the China Film Archive, explained to the media what to expect from the film series, and revealed how first- -time viewers can best appreciate French movies.

Q: Why should I watch French movies?

A: French films have a lot of virtues. For one thing, they use dialogue and plot, instead of visual effects, to drive the story. For another, they stress diversity (多元). While Hollywood movies are often about universal values, French movies have French culture or regional cultures deeply rooted in them. You have to understand them in their cultural context. That' s what sometimes makes French movies difficult to understand.

Q: How can a Chinese audience appreciate French movies?

A: You need to get used to their way of filming. When shooting two people talking to each other, the traditional way is to film each person face-forward as they take turns speaking. However, French movies are filmed in more experimental ways, like switching from a close shot to a long shot.

Also, you should search for background information. The movie' s title and its director can reflect its ideas and storyline. For example, Les Enfants du Paradis (1945), also known as Children of Paradise, tells the story of beautiful Garance and the four men who love her in their own ways. Garance meets these men in a theater, and the "Paradis" in the movie title is an informal French name for a theater' s gallery.

A.To recommend some classic French movies.
B.To help readers to better appreciate French movies.

2. Which of the following is a characteristic of French movies?
A.They are often about universal values.
B.They usually have really good visual effects.
C.They attach a lot of importance to French culture and French regional cultures.
D.They are sometimes hard to understand because of their complex plots.
3. Which of the following is TRUE about French movies according to the text?
A.They are mostly romances and are usually artistic.
B.They often involve more close shots than long shots.
C.They prefer to use the traditional way of shooting two people talking to each other.
D.Their titles and directors can help viewers learn background information.

On Monday, the company announced that the newest movie to get the live-action treatment would be Mulan.
Based on the same Chinese legend as the 1998 animated movie, Mulan will follow in the footsteps of Cinderella, Maleficent, and several already-announced upcoming movies.

【推荐3】At Japan’s Studio Ghibli, which has produced extraordinary animated films(动画片)since 1985, the best-known figure has always been one of the company’s founders, Hayao Miyazaki.
But an equally key figure is co-founder Isao Takahata, who has recently made a new feature, The Tale of Princess Kagnya. It is an unforgettable feature with an unusual hand-drawn aesthetic(美感).
The title character is a tiny baby girl who appears in a bamboo plant. She is found by a woodcutter, who takes her home and brings her up. He believes the little girl is a princess, and sets about preparing what he regards as a suitable world for her.
This original story is the oldest work of fiction in Japan; every child knows it in its simplified folktale form.
“It is a fascinating story with elements of wonder, humour, and sorrow,’’ Takahata says, “but these three elements are scattered(分散)about.” The chief challenge for anyone trying to adapt it is that “we are completely unable to comprehend what was in the heart of Princess Kaguya. Because of this, despite its being well known, few people consider it interesting. There have been several attempts at making a film out of the story, but they ended up being abandoned.”
He was connected with one of these attempts, but no one paid any attention to his concept.
“Fifty-five years later, I thought my concept was still appealing, and used it as a basis for turning the story into a feature film.”
His concept involves the princess’s origins, her expectations and her access to “the full range of human emotions”.
To realize his vision, Takahata says, “I needed to take the extremely individualistic brushwork and key designs of Osamu Tanabe and Kazuo Oga, two brilliantly talented artists, and have them permeate(扩散)throughout the film. The two of them drew many pictures, but they weren’t nearly enough. The most challenging part was to have all the other animation staff copy their styles in a free and easy way.”
The Tale of Princess Kaguya has been released, and people are saying that the two founders, now in their seventies, have directed their final films. But is it as clear-cut as that? When I ask Takahata about a scene of escape and urgency with a particularly distinctive (独特的) visual style, he says he had intended to use “this type of rough-drawn, forceful animation, in a project before this film.
“That project hasn’t been realized yet, but if it comes to pass, this style is essential.”
A hint, perhaps, there's still more to come.
