【推荐1】During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. To make the time go faster, they sang “field hollers (叫喊)” that they used to sing in Africa. After the Civil War, African American music began to take new forms. It also adapted dance music, called “jump-ups”, which had great rhythm (节奏). By the early 1900s, the guitar had become the main instrument of the blues.

Northern Mississippi, also known as the Delta, was the center of the blues tradition. By the 1920s, the Delta had many blues clubs called “juke joints”. African Americans listened and danced to music in these clubs. Some of the greatest blues singers and players performed in them.

Blues have a soulful (深情的) sound that listeners can easily recognize. The musical notes are often “bent”. This means that players change the notes slightly to give a song more strength. Whatever their origin, these bent notes most often define the blues.

Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are often very intense and personal. They tell about sad times and hard work. They describe people who find or lose love, people who have money or wish for more, and people who feel happy or sad and lonely. The lyrics may use humor to describe life’s trials and joys. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech.

By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans had left the Delta and moved north to find work. Many settled in Chicago. A new kind of blues, called “electric” or “Chicago” blues, began there. It used many of the same themes as the original blues. However, the new style of blues was played with electric guitars that “wailed” and with mouth instruments called harmonicas. The music often included a steady, strong drumbeat. The loud, intense Chicago blues was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the creation of a new music style: rock and roll.

1. What can you conclude about the blues music from the article?

3. Compared with the Delta blues style, the Chicago blues style        .
A.used more bent notes.B.used humor in the lyrics more often.
C.was louder and used some different instruments.D.was much more popular.
4. Which of the following would the author probably agree?
A.Blues music can communicate many human emotions.
B.Blues music focuses mainly on the sadness of everyday life.
C.Delta blues music is the only real blues music.
D.The musicians of blues music were mostly in poor conditions.

【推荐2】Did you know that, in 2016, over 18 million people attended classical concerts in Germany? That’s more people than those who went to main league football matches! Earlier this year, Germany continued its celebration of classical music with the opening of a new concert hall in the heart of Hamburg. Germans are incredibly proud of it and it’s the first thing I show to my friends when they come to visit.
Known as the ‘Elphi’ by the locals, the Elbphilharmonie is a beautiful tower of glittering glass sitting atop an old warehouse by the banks of the river Elbe. The plaza(露天广场)is open to the public an from the middle of the city’s tallest building, you can gaze across the harbour, miles of rooftops and passing ships below.
The main concert hall seats over 2000 people and is one of the most advanced music venues in the world. Two smaller concert halls are used for jazz, world and contemporary music. In addition, if you’re unbelievably rich, you can buy one of the 45 luxurious apartments lying within the building.
Construction began in 2007 with a budget of €241 million and a two-year period. Fast forward ten years, the building eventually opened with a final price tag of over 800 million!
I consider myself very lucky that the Elbphilharmonie opened during my time living in Hamburg, but unfortunately I haven’t yet been able to attend a concert. Everything is sold out for six months! For now, I’m content to visit the plaza to enjoy the impressive view over the docks and see the innovative architecture up close.
