When I think about what makes Christmas so magical, it’s my memory of Granny as well as gifts and Father Christmas     1     comes to mind.

I can well remember the last Christmas Granny     2     (spend) with us. On a cold, windy day, Granny moved in. She was sick, but I failed to notice it. Granny made     3    effort to help me with my letter to Father Christmas. With her hand shaking     4     (slight), she wrote “Father Christmas, the North Pole” on the envelope.

In December, we made sugar biscuits, stuffed the turkey and sang Christmas songs. Granny had the patience     5     (sing) my favorite part over and over again. On Christmas Eve, Granny watched as we put     6     the Christmas tree. I hung most of the decorations on the branches.

On Christmas morning, I was on my best     7     (behave) as we opened the presents. Later, Granny gave me a special gift—a music box with a ballet dancer inside. After breakfast, as I played outside, Granny stayed inside by the fire. I remember     8     (catch) her eye through the window. I called and asked her to join us, but she just waved. Lunch was late, but it was a loud and     9     (excite) affair. There was a lot of laughter.

A few weeks after that Christmas, Granny passed away. I think of her often. Each Christmas, I make a G-shape sugar biscuit and take out the music box,     10     memory of Granny.

Today is my son Matthew’s last day at home before college. I know that this is good news. I feel extremely proud that Matthew will go to a great school. But looking at the suitcases on his bed sends me out of the room to a hidden corner where I can’t stop crying     1     (bitter). Maybe it’s normal for most people.

2     (feel) rather depressed, I tell myself, “Pull yourself together!” There are parents sending their kids off to battle fields.

One of the greatest gifts of my life is my boys, Matthew and John Owen. Through them, I have explored the mysterious and complicated bond(纽带) between fathers and sons over the past years By the time Saturday came around, I     3     (be) unable to enjoy the day’s activities.

Now, standing among Matthew’s so many things including a     4     (collect) of science magazines, all of a sudden, I realize it’s me who has become a boy again. All my sadness and longing     5     (hold) on to things are back, sweeping over me as they did when I was a child.

His bed,     6     position is in the corner of the room, is tidy and spare. It already has the feel of a guest bed, In my mind I remember wrapping him in his favorite blanket. That was our nightly routine until one evening he said, “Daddy, I don’t think I need a blanket tonight.” I think of all the times when we lay among the covers, reading books or magazines, I look at the bed and think of all the recent times when I was     7     (annoy) at how late he was sleeping. I’ll never have to worry about that again.

For his part, Matthew, who is an     8     (ambition) boy, has been a rock. He is treating the time to leave as just another day at home. After all, someone’s got to be strong. The reason why I’m proud is     9     he is charging into the first chapter of his adult life with such confidence. I myself am to blame     10     the feelings of sorrow and bitterness.

An Excerpt from Mo Yan’s Nobel Speech

Distinguished members of the Swedish Academy, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Through the mediums of television and the Internet, I imagine that everyone here has at least a    1    (nod)acquaintance with far-off Northeast Gaomi Township. You    2     have seen my ninety-year-old father, as well as my brothers, my sister, my wife and my daughter, even my granddaughter, now a year and four months old. But the person who is most on my mind at this moment, my mother, is someone you will never see. Many people have shared in the honor of winning this prize, everyone    3     her.

My mother was born in 1922 and died in 1994. We buried her in a peach orchard east of the village. Last year we were forced to move her grave    4    (far)away from the village in order to make room for a    5    (propose)rail line. When we dug up the grave, we saw that the coffin had rotted away and that her body had merged with the damp earth around it. So we dug up some of that soil, a symbolic act, and took it to the new gravesite. That was when I grasped the knowledge that my mother had become part of the earth, and    6     when I spoke to mother earth, I was really speaking to my mother.

I was my mother’s youngest child.

My most remorseful memory involves helping Mother sell cabbages at market, and me    7    (overcharge)an old villager one jiao-intentionally or not, I can’t recall-before heading off to school. When I came home that afternoon, I saw that Mother was crying,     8     that she rarely did. Instead of scolding me, she merely said softly, “Son, you embarrassed your mother today.”

I was born ugly. Villagers often laughed in my face, and school bullies sometimes beat me up because of it. I’d run home crying,     9     my mother would say, “You’re not ugly, son. You’ve got a nose and two eyes, and there’s nothing wrong with your arms and legs, so how could you be ugly? If you have a good heart and always do the right thing,     10     is considered ugly becomes beautiful.” Later on, when I moved to the city, there were educated people who laughed at me behind my back, some even to my face; but when I recalled what Mother had said, I just calmly offered my apologies.
