Quilts (床罩) are a narrative art; with themes that are political, spiritual, communal, or commemorative, they are infused with history and memory, mapping out intimate stories and legacies through a handcrafted language of design. Handstitched Worlds: The Cartography of Quilts is an invitation to read quilts as maps, tracing the paths of individual histories that illuminate larger historic events and cultural trends.
Spanning the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, this insightful and engaging exhibition brings together 18 quilts from the collection of the American Folk Art Museum, New York, representing a range of materials, motifs, and techniques from traditional early-American quilts to more contemporary sculptural assemblages. The quilts in Handstitched Worlds show us how this too-often overlooked medium balances creativity with tradition, individuality with collective zeitgeist. Solaja lived on campus with 10 to 1s other students in the Arts and Business LLC.
Three reasons may account for the prospective international stadents willingness
to consider LLCS.
1. Connect with like-minded students: Prospective international students can choose an LLC to fully experience college life in a new country and find immediate support among residents: Unlike other housing arrangements, LLCS can provide a built-in community of like-minded individuals
Solaja says a highlight of her experience in the LLC was"forming relationships with upper-year students in my program. This peer leader provided her with everything from academic support to guidance on how to survive Canadian winters. Many LLCS have upper-division students who serve as peer leaders.
Australian Natasha Fitzpatrick says she's happy to share her love for travel and cultural exploration. "A group of us hired a car and traveled down to North Carolina sightseeing.”
2. Participate in community activities: For those worried about being on the outside as a new international student, LLCS encourage participation through various on-and off-campus activities. For example, students in a fashion LLC have attended Toronto Fashion week
Through LLCS, international students will have more opportunities to interact with domestic students, faculty and staff members outside classrooms,"says Shijuan Laurel Liu, assistant professor of Chinese and a partner with the Global Awareness LLC. In a Chinese New Year celebration associated with the LLC, for instance, students from her language and culture courses worked with Chinese students to introduce Chinese culture to the community
Solaja says coming from a different education system in Nigeria with sometimes unapproachable professors, she enjoyed LLC on-campus events like when she played board games with Waterloo professors and academic advisers.
3. Network for job opportunities: International students who plan to gain work experience in the country they study in can benefit from LLCS that are associated with campus departments and staff. This can provide them with chances to network and inquire about work opportunities.
Liu says when Chinese tutoring positions and graduate assistantships became available, she thought of international students from the Global Awareness LLC who previously helped her organize events. She also wrote reference letters for those students when they applied to graduate school.
Robert C. Demezzo, director of residence life at Southern Connecticut State University, says LLCS "help many international students secure employment on campus.
Solaja says her year living in Waterloo's Arts and Business LLC was one of her best decisions." You get what you put into the program," she says.

This is a unique moment. We are stepping up to another phase of our lives at a time of great hardship and global difficulties. Hope this ceremony will help erase sad memories, refresh beautiful ones and add more splendid memories into our lives.
I was born in the middle of war, which caused my family to move to Serbia for three years. When the war ended, we returned to Bosnia. My mother, who is and will ever be my heroine, was the only figure who guided me, provided for me and kept me on the right track, in the hope for a better life. I owed her so much as she is responsible for huge part of my success. I will always remember her teachings “to complain less and always find solutions at the price of whatever it takes” , which brought me to China, an ancient land of new hopes.
During the COVID-19 outbreak, I got the best opportunity to understand China. I saw millions of people united with one goal-to win the battle against this epidemic. I have never seen such a collective dedication from a nation, turning things for the better by sacrificing personal convenience on a grand scale. China's governance and health care system proves to be one of the most efficient in the world. With a population of 1.4 billion, China not only has successfully controlled the transmission of the corona-virus but also assisted many other countries across the globe.
Everyone has a role to play in the battle against the virus. In Tsinghua, I played a tiny but necessary role: Staying on campus, studying online, cooperating during temperature checks and respecting social distancing measures. The rules set by the university and Chinese government had everyone's health and safety as first priority. This made me feel safe and confident that China was on the right track towards victory. Throughout this time, despite the immense challenges, Tsinghua has facilitated many online conferences, which helped me nurture more skills in my field of study.
Friends, we are now graduating from one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Tsinghua has been like a mother to us over the past months and years, guiding and nurturing us along the way, providing us with great vision and placing on us high expectations. So what comes next? Actions speak louder than words. Let us accept new challenges, think beyond our limits and keep in mind the ethics of life.
Let's undertake everything we can for the sake of unity, humanity and the international community. Let's work together for a more promising future and prosperous world.

The Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks Reviewed by Helena No lyrical, romantic account, but a hard-bitten, dull and down-to-earth story of a family, a community and an environment. A story of cycles—of seasons, years, people, generations, stretches back centuries. A story of farming which only exists now in the remoter, wilder region of the UK, where the land is too hard and the environment too harsh for farming to be an "agribusiness". Where success, survival of farms, their sheep are dependent on knowledge passed down through generations and shared between farmers and shepherds in a small, close-knit and mutually-dependent community. A story of people hefted to their land every bit as much as their sheep are hefted to their fells. | |
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson Reviewed by T. Bently Having read all of Bill Bryson's travel books, this was the last one left. I hadn't read this because I had been told it was one of his weakest one. But I decided, through no other reason that I needed a hit of Bryson, to read it. People couldn’t have been more wrong. From the very beginning of assessing the feasibility, arranging for Katz to accompany him to the purchasing of his equipment and the purchasing of “a large knife for killing bears and hillbillies”, Bryson is at his absolute best. His cute eye-is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile but fragile trail. His encounters along the trail and Katz anti-social, childish antics(滑稽动作) make the first 150 pages more than a laugh-out-loud-hike. I couldn't have been more surprised. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modem classic. |
A.little noticed, and deeply attached to the harsh land |
B.alternated by the seasons and changed by the generations |
C.featuring a hard struggle in the remote and beautiful area |
D.spent in a profitable agricultural and friendly community |
A.Bryson's travelling experience is laughable. |
B.Bryson's travel book is the best seller in travelling literature. |
C.A Walk in the Wood combines artistic quality well with natural beauty. |
D.It's a pity that people turn a blind eye to Bryson's travelling experience. |

Last Exit: Space
Last Exit: Space, narrated by Werner Herzog, explores the human potential for settling in space and sending people where they’ve never been before. Since planet Earth is possibly going to hell (地狱) in a handbasket, the film promises to ask the question: where else might we call home? Directed by his son Rudolph Herzog, Last Exit: Space will be available from March 10 on Discovery.
Gorbachev. Heaven
As leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev was once one of the most powerful people on the planet who governed a landmass so big that it covered 11 time zones. Gorbachev’s legacy is a complex one — he oversaw the end of the Cold War but many Russians blame him for the Soviet Union’s collapse. The BBC says this potentially fascinating look at one of the most significant figures from inside his own home will be airing in the very near future.
We Met In Virtual Reality
This film from director Joe Hunting beats fresh ground in that it is filmed entirely in virtual reality. Less about the technology itself, it is more an exploration of human connections and how these can develop in the 3D virtual world. Early reviews have been positive following its showing at Sundance. Expect a streaming release in late May this year.
