On the first day of high school after moving to St. Louis, Missouri this summer, I was really nervous. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. I bought a new outfit (套装) regardless of the high price just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious, I walked up the stairs to the front door. My first class was math, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. I’ll help you find your class. My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope your day goes all right.” I said thanks and waved good-bye.
Once inside the classroom, I saw a guy in the middle of the class who was wearing a letter jacket. A group of people crowded around him. I decided this guy was popular. He was talking about wild and crazy things he had done in the summer. A few minutes later, the teacher came in and told everyone to find a seat. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said, “Hi, I’m Johnny.”
That lass dragged on and on Finally the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is. Could you help me find it?” “No!” he said, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that the new girl trying to get into our group? That outfit was way too strange.”

The cafeteria (自助食堂) conversation on Monday was all about hockey (冰上曲棍球) again. Jade usually fit in with the sports crowd, but now she was not included in the conversation.
“When will you get out on the ice, Jade?” Hazel asked. Jade was a soccer star at her old school in California. “I’m inviting her to play hockey.” Hazel told other players at the table.
Jade lowered her voice. “I can’t make it to open skating time because I have to look after my younger brother Calvin until 6:30.”
But Hazel had been friendly since their first meeting and she wasn’t going to give upon this. “A rink (溜冰场) is behind the stadium. I can practice with you thereafter the closing time. You can buy skates from Ms. Silva, the facility manager. 7 o’clock this evening at the rink!” Hazel told Jade excitedly.
However, Jade didn’t tell Hazel she couldn’t afford the skates and hockey stick. After school Jade hurried home to look after Calvin. When she was cleaning the crumbs (面包屑) under Calvin’s highchair with a broom, she got an idea. At 6:35, Jade grabbed the broom and an old tennis ball.
At the rink, Hazel hadn’t turned up yet. In her dirty shoes, Jade practiced hitting the ball with the broom independently. Surprisingly, she scored a goal. But her smile disappeared as she saw Ms. Silva walking over.
She looked down at Jade’s feet pitifully. “Your shoes made the rink dirty. Those aren’t skates and hockey stick.”
“I’m really sorry for the dirt,” Jade apologized. “I don’t have money for those.”
“You didn’t tell me that!” Hazel appeared, holding Jade’s hands.
“Want a weekend job?” Ms. Silva advised gently. “I’ll teach you how to remove the dirt and leaves. A month later you may get new skates!” “Definitely.” Jade replied. “I’ll be there with you!” Hazel said.

Whether middle school students should make friends on line
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________My world was in a constant state of change and I was having trouble keeping up. Life with Mom, Dad, and my sister, Linda, had always been comfortable and fairly predictable. My grades were good, and Linda and I got on well. We played together and fought together, the way sisters do. As the older one, I was used to being told to set an example, which wasn’t too difficult, since Linda was only two years younger, and she usually wanted to do anything I did, anyway. Life was pretty good.
Then the changes started coming.
First came a family meeting with surprising news that would change my world. We were moving. Our new home would be across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, in another borough of New York City. We were leaving the only home I had ever known. Even worse, it would occur right before the beginning of sixth grade. Not only would I not be able to graduate from elementary school with my friends, but I would have to start middle school with a class full of kids who had known each other, and bonded, since kindergarten. Where would that leave me?
I spent the summer adjusting to a new neighborhood, literally being the new kid on the block. Making friends didn’t come easily to me, and it didn’t help being the eldest child of immigrant parents. I was different, and being different is the last thing any middle school student wants. The fear of starting a new school hung over me like a black cloud, damaging each summer day.
The first day of school arrived too quickly. I entered my new classroom trying very hard not to appear as scared as I felt, but it wasn’t easy. Twenty-eight faces turned to look up at me as I followed the Assistant Principal into the room. They all looked so cool, and some of the girls even wore make-up. How would I ever fit in? I was out of touch in every way possible. I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up or nail polish. Most of my clothes were handmade, sewn by my mother and grandmother.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The sea was shining across the horizon as my husband, Michael, and I looked out over the rocky cliff(悬崖) of Gleesons Landing in Yorke Peninsula. "Careful Abby doesn't fall down the rocks here," Michael warned as he pulled out his fishing rod(鱼竿). Abby was our two-year-old rescue dog(搜救犬)we'd adopted one year earlier.
Leaving Michael to his fishing, Abby and I wandered off. We'd been walking for a while when we saw a small path that led down the side of the cliff towards the beach. Abby raced off and as I followed, my leg caught on a rock and I fell down the cliff. Landing three meters down, my left leg cracked violently. Shocked, I tried to keep myself calm. I couldn't feel any pain but when I tried to get up, my body just fell back down. "Go and get Daddy," I signaled to Abby as she paced nervously beside me. At first she refused to leave my side. But somehow she realized I needed her and raced off.
Alone and staring out to sea, my world faded to black. Staying awake some time later, I discovered Abby hadn't returned. Suddenly, I heard movement coming from above. "Sue?" Michael called out. Relief flooded through me as I looked up and saw Michael and Abby. "I think I broke my leg," I shouted back. "I'll go get help," he promised. "If I try to reach you myself, they'll be rescuing two of us."
Faint and tired, I held on to consciousness. Abbey came down to me and kept me company until the rescuers arrived. They carried me on a stretcher(担架) to a helicopter, where I was flown to hospital in Adelaide while Michael and Abby drove.

“Which of you did this ?” he asked with a sharp voice. We all stared down at the floor containing the art of a child’s handwriting in chalk.
I stood there, trembling and hoped that no one else could see it. “Will he know it was me?” I secretly wondered. Scared, I said,“Not me, Dad.”
The others denied it as well. Of course, we knew that one of us must have done it. But I, being the youngest and smallest of us three, just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth. I wasn’t a bad kid and lying was not normal for me. But the look on my dad’s face that evening frightened me and somehow I couldn’t bring myself to tell him.
Without saying a word, he disappeared for several minutes and came back with a piece of paper and a pencil, determined to find out who did it.
He asked each of us to write exactly what we saw on the floor. I wasn’t a stupid kid though. When my turn came, I deliberately wrote the words differently. So when my dad compared the handwriting, he still couldn’t tell which one of us did it. Frustrated, he took a step towards us and looked at his three small kids.
“I’m going to give you one more chance to admit.”
Not surprisingly, neither my brother nor my sister spoke up. Why should they?
I was the one who did it. “Should I say something? Is it too late? He will be mad.” Again, frightened, I held my tongue.
He took us all in the house as tears suddenly filled my eyes. “Since none of you seemed to have done it, then you will all get a spanking(打屁股).” What? Still I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was a spanking.

Our car ran over the sand and rocks, leaving a cloud of dust. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was bright and the sky was clear—perfect conditions for off-roading(越野). Back then, in 1984, my wife Sue and I were living in southeastern California. The views were wonderful, but with dangers. The temperatures could rise above 50℃, and it was no place for tourists to go off-roading without enough preparation.
Sue and I always took a bag with us, packed with snacks, water, and a first aid kit. We also had a car specially changed for driving in the desert. With it, we could go anywhere a jeep could go.
That day, we drove about 20 miles into the park. Around midday,we stopped to have a rest. As usual, we could see the desert before us. When the spirit of adventure moved us, we went back into the car. But when I turned the key nothing happened. I tried again and again. Nothing happened. I could see Sue was thinking the same thing—the engine wouldn’t start.
Our car had one strange problem. About once a year, it would refuse to start. If left overnight, the engine would run just fine the next morning. But no one could find anything wrong with our car. Because it happened so rarely, we’d just learned to live with it. But it had never happened suddenly.
“What should we do?” I felt a little anxious. I hadn’t seen a person on our drive out here, and we had no way to call for help.“We could walk back to town,”Sue said. Eager not to waste any more daylight,we quickly packed our things. We were about to set off when Sue called my name.“Look!” she cried. Sure enough, there was something, getting closer.
