A tsunami is an extremely large wave in the sea caused by an earthquake at the sea bed. The following safety tips may help you deal with it.

Before the tsunami

Know the warning signs of a tsunami: rapidly rising or falling coastal waters, a loud noise from the ocean, or rumblings of an earthquake. “If people along the Indian Ocean coastline on December 26, 2004, were aware of these natural warnings, fewer people would have died.” says an expert.     1     And you’d better map your evacuation(疏散) route.

During the tsunami

● If you’re in a tsunami area and there is an earthquake, first drop to the floor, cover your head and neck, and hold on to something stable.     2

3     “Listen to the authorities, but do not wait for tsunami warnings and evacuation orders,” suggests the U.S. site Ready.gov.

● People often mistake the distance they have to go to be safe. “Many people think they’ve got to go miles,” Richards says. “    4    ” If you’re a visitor staying in a tall concrete hotel, he adds, going above the fourth floor likely will be safer than evacuating.

● Stay put in a safe area until an official all-clear is given. The first wave may not be the last or the strongest and the danger can last for hours or even days.

After the tsunami

First, stay clear of damaged or flooded areas and downed power lines. Meanwhile, listen for further alerts and instructions about evacuation zones and shelters.     5     Phone systems are likely to be down or busy at that time.

A.But it might be just right behind Johnny’s house.
B.But they can also come back as soon as possible.
C.If you’re in a low-lying area, move inland as soon as possible.
D.Take the warnings seriously, and strictly follow the requirements.
E.Listen for official warnings, but also listen and watch for natural signs.
F.Besides, you should be familiar with your government’s warning system.
G.You’d better use texts and social media to communicate with loved ones.

【推荐1】Tornadoes

Tornadoes are essentially funnels of air rotating as fast as 300 miles per hour. Of course, not all tornadoes are so dangerous.     1     Such small tornadoes occur in many places around the world, even in southern Taiwan, where several are usually reported every spring.

It is, however, the big tornadoes that receive the most attention.     2     There can be flocks of dead birds dropping out of the sky, chickens still alive but with all of their feathers gone, pieces of straw stuck in trees. In a 1999 US storm, violent winds from one tornado lifted a church into the air and dropped it onto a house. In the same storm, a baby was whipped from its mother’s arms and, miraculously, found alive in a nearby tree.

3     Although scientists now know a great deal about tornadoes, they still cannot determine exactly when and where one will form. In addition, the path of a tornado can also be impossible to predict. It is unlikely to move in a straight line, and will often turn quickly. A tornado might blow down a line of houses, then suddenly lift up and leave one home unhurt, then touch back down and destroy the rest of the line.

To better understand tornadoes, scientists have developed special heavy-duty vehicles and weather-monitoring equipment that allow them to make close-up observations of these dangerous storms. Radar equipment is put on trucks and driven near a tornado, where it records wind speeds and other weather data.     4

In addition, better communication and warning systems are also helping to reduce deaths and injuries in many tornado-prone areas. Radio and television warnings as well as sirens help to alert people to potential danger. Public awareness is also important. When tornadoes do occur, people must act quickly. They should move immediately to a safe place such as a basement or under a strong stairway and cover themselves with blankets or heavy coats.     5

A.Either big storms or small ones can form quickly causing damage to some degree.
B.These bring not only death and destruction, but also stories of strange phenomena.
C.Many more are small storms that form quickly and disappear, causing little or no damage.
D.A tornado can arrive so unexpectedly that a matter of seconds can mean the difference between life and death.
E.Driving the radar hundreds of miles to chase down a tornado is a best job that can be quite dangerous.
F.What makes tornadoes so dangerous is not just their great power but also their unpredictable nature.
G.Scientists often have to drive the radar hundreds of miles to chase down a tornado — a job that can be quite dangerous!

【推荐2】A flood occurs when water overflows. This can happen in many ways. Most common is when rivers or streams overflow their banks. Excessive rain, a ruptured (破裂的) dam or levee (防洪堤), rapid ice melting in the mountains can overwhelm a river and send it spreading over the nearby land, called a floodplain. Coastal flooding occurs when a large storm or tsunami causes the sea to surge inland.

Most floods take hours or even days to develop, giving residents enough time to prepare or leave. Others generate quickly and with little warning. These flash floods can be extremely dangerous, instantly turning a babbling brook into a thundering wall of water and sweeping everything in its path downstream.

Disaster experts classify floods according to their likelihood of occurring in a given time period. A hundred-year flood, for example, is an extremely large, destructive event that would theoretically be expected to happen only once every century. But this is a theoretical number. In reality, this classification means there is a one-percent chance that such a flood could happen in any given year. Over recent decades, possibly due to global climate change, hundred-year floods have been occurring worldwide with frightening regularity.

Moving water has awesome destructive power. When a river overflows its banks or the sea drives inland, structures poorly equipped to withstand the water's strength are no match. Bridges, houses, trees, and cars can be picked up and carried off. The erosive force of moving water can drag dirt from under a building's foundation, causing it to crack and tumble.

When floodwaters recede (退去), affected areas are often blanketed in silt and mud. The water and landscape can be contaminated (污染) with hazardous materials, such as sharp debris, pesticides, fuel, and untreated sewage. Potentially dangerous mold blooms can quickly overwhelm water-soaked structures. Residents of flooded areas can be left without power and clean drinking water, leading to outbreaks of deadly waterborne diseases like typhoid, hepatitis A, and cholera.

But flooding, particularly in river floodplains, is as natural as rain and has been occurring for millions of years.

1. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us________.

3. A car's being picked up by rushing water shows that________.
A.moving water is powerfulB.the car must be poorly equipped
C.the erosive force of water is destructiveD.the power of moving water has no match
4. What is most likely to be discussed next?
A.Disastrous floods in the world.B.The means of preventing floods.

【推荐3】The public nowadays has a misunderstanding of forest fires, believing that fire s should be kept out of every type of forest. Many of us can recall Smoky the Bear’s famous warning: “Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires”. However, that’s not always the case. Under the right conditions, and when conducted safely, fire can create many environmental benefits as well as help prevent larger, uncontrollable wildfires.

After a forest fire, many wildlife species will move into recently burned areas to feed on these newly available foods. Some reptiles and amphibians such as the pine snake prefer forests frequently burned by fire. As Herbert Stoddard put it, “One of the most harmful things modern man has done to birds has been his attempt to exclude fire from fire-type pine(松树) forests. Within a few years most forests choke up with bushes, lose their prairie-like vegetation(草原般植被) and can no longer support birds dependent on periodic burning for their food supply and proper cover.”

If you are asked to picture the forest floor, what do you see? Pine needles, cones, leaves, branches might come to mind-all sources of fuel. If these fuel sources build up without any type of removal, the ‘fuel load’ can lead to fires catastrophic to forests and people alike. In contrast, prescribed fire can be used by forest professionals every couple of years to keep forest fuels at an appropriate and manageable level. They can also minimize the spread of pest insects and disease and remove unwanted tree and plant species. Plus, they can create and maintain important wildlife habitats rich in grasses and promote the growth of trees, wildflowers and other various plants.

Many organizations and agencies work to promote fire on the landscape when and where appropriate. Smoky Bear even has an updated warning: “Only You can Prevent Wildfires,” as the Forest Service has over the last few decades developed policies and procedures to include prescribed fire as a management tool, as well as continuing their work to prevent and fight wildfires.

1. Why did the author mention Smoky the Bear’s warning?
A.To raise people’s awareness of forest protection.B.To illustrate a conventional wisdom.
C.To show the significance of fire prevention.D.To introduce the topic of the passage.
2. What can benefit birds according to Herbert Stoddard?
A.Forest bushes.B.Fuel sources.C.Periodic burning.D.Pine forests.
3. What is the purpose of prescribed fire?
A.To keep the forest balance.B.To keep the fuel rich in the forest.
C.To put out wildfires.D.To remove tree and plant species.
4. What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Why Not Keep The Forest Fire BurningB.Not All Forest Fires Are Created Equal
C.Where There Is Smoke There Is A FireD.One Match Can Start A Forest Fire
