There was nothing I wanted more than a trophy (奖杯). I was twelve, and the hope of placing a trophy on my dresser woke me up in the middle of the night.
All of my friends had trophies. Any of those would have excited me.
However, the problem for me was that I had no skills or gifts that would enable me to get a trophy.
My elder brother, Alan, had shelves of trophies, and most of them came from horse races. Before Dad died, he had bought each of us a horse. I named my horse Colonel. Alan’s was named Otis. When Alan kicked Otis’sides, he would run. Colonel always wanted to follow, and I could feel him speeding up, but I was afraid of falling, so I would pull on the ropes and we would fall behind.
After my father died, my mother seldom went to the stables (马厩) where we boarded the horses. Mostly she stayed in her room. Alan cooked our meals and paid our bills with money he made by waiting tables. This was also the year when I started smoking, cutting class, and hanging out with kids who, like me, had no trophies and couldn’t care less.
When the worst of my report cards arrived, Alan angrily asked, “What do you think you’re doing? Who do you think you’re fooling?” I answered, “I truly don’t know.” I just felt life was meaningless, dull and aimless.
Alan started picking me up from school. He didn’t allow me to stay with bad kids, and we drove to the stables to ride until night fell. Through all of this, I still loved riding and still found comfort in being around Colonel, but I hated being made to ride.
After a week of being forced to spend my afternoons with him, I was angry. Alan just said, “I entered you in the horse race. It’s in two weeks.” I was surprised and excited, but I didn’t let on. I just asked angrily, “Why?”
“You still want a trophy, right?” he said.

Once, I was traveling with my mum and elder sister. It was a day journey and we entered the ladies’ compartment (隔间) of the train, where the seats all had “Ladies” written on the back. It was crowded but we got seats and settled down. We kept our luggage under the seats and waited for the train to start.
Ladies kept on coming inside. The seats were quickly taken, and there were even people standing along the aisles, which made the people in the compartment seem to be breathless. Only one seat was empty when a woman with a baby entered. She was about to go over to the empty place, when a burly (结实的) looking man entered, walked straight over to the empty seat, and sat down with a thump (砰的一声), taking no notice of his surroundings.
The lady with the child held on to her bag and stood in a corner. I was watching all this with a frown. I expected the woman standing there or any of the other ladies to speak out asking the man to leave the ladies’ compartment.
Alas! No one spoke. Most ladies there seemed to be busy with their own business, including my mom and sister who had their eyes shut trying to rest, unaware of anything wrong. I decided I could not disturb them. I kept on feeling upset with frustration, wanting to help in some way. I would have offered my place but I was already sitting between my mom and sister, both of whom were stronger than me, so I couldn’t move a bit.
The train had started and was gaining speed minute by minute. The woman standing there was swaying to and fro with the train’s speed, the screaming child in her arms. The mannerless man had no reaction. I couldn’t stand it any more.

I went to a supermarket to pick up some things. I placed my purse in the baby carry-on chair and turned my back to add some cabbages into a bag for supper. The cart(购物车)was right next to me one minute ago, then gone!
As I looked around, I did not see an abandoned cart nor mine. I searched the fruit and vegetable area, and every cart but with no luck, no purse! My heart started pounding as I realized that someone may have taken my purse.
I walked to a member of staff, explaining what happened. He ran to get the manager. The manager listened carefully and told me she would go into her office and check the camera to see what happened on the video and call the police if necessary. I felt very nervous then. I told them my purse had my keys, license, phone, identification, etc. Meanwhile, the staff said he would check carts. The manager ran to her office at the front of the store to check the camera.
A young lady had just walked by asking if I was OK. I said, “Not good, but thanks.” I asked if she had a cell phone to call my phone to check if someone would pick it up. But no one answered it. I thanked her. She said she would accompany(陪伴)me till I found my purse. I couldn’t thank her enough.
After a while, the manager came back and told me she had seen an old woman in the camera video take my cart when I was in the meat section. Not until that time did I remembered that there was indeed a woman near me picking out goods. She must have dragged my cart by accident!
I rushed to the meat section, followed by the manager and the young lady. To my relief, I found the old woman without any effort.

As a child I didn’t really have good memories of Christmas, so as an adult, Christmas became a time I just wanted to avoid. I especially had trouble with all the Christmas music, which seemed to be just about everywhere. That was why I volunteered to work that Christmas Eve. The store where I worked in downtown Toronto was one of the few that didn’t play Christmas music. But that year I was given the best gift ever — a stranger came along and raised my Christmas spirit again.
It was the Christmas of 1992 and I was working at my sales job during the busiest season of the year. It was a time when customers became difficult to please, as patience seemed to be lost in the crowds. Few people were nice to salespeople during this time and working in a store became a major challenge.
I was relieved that my shift (轮班) was over and I could go home to avoid the rest of Christmas. I entered a subway car at the College Park subway station and found a single seat at the back of it, as far away from others as possible. I just wanted to get home and get out of my bad mood (心情).
I didn’t notice which station we were in when the stranger with the homeless appearance and boisterous (喧闹的) voice entered the subway car. When he started to talk to other passengers, I turned my attention to something else on purpose. I wanted to make it clear I had no interest in talking to this guy. Then the train was delayed in the tunnel for ten minutes. I was becoming more and more annoyed.
When the stranger started singing Jingle Bells I knew I’d had enough, but I was trapped. Then, slowly the other passengers joined in, and soon everyone sang with him.
Paragraph 1:
Then, to my shock, I found myself singing as well!

I grew up in Iowa on a farm by a major highway. During serious snowstorms, people often got stuck along that road. Weather prediction in the 1950s wasn’t too accurate, so we had no warning to store food before storms. Otherwise, we could keep enough food in the house to feed many people for days—including those stranded(使……滞留).
Our large house was home to my parents and 2 children—my brother Bob, six years older than me and I. We always had room for overnight storm “guests”, but rarely knew any of them. When I was 14, a heavy snowstorm stranded seven people at our house. By 8:00 p.m. my family and unexpected guests were settled in eating popcorn and watching TV.
Through the strong wind and TV, I thought I heard a loud noise outside. I heard it again. When I opened the door, I screamed. Someone was lying there, completely covered with snow, speaking unclearly and quietly about something we could not understand. Eventually, she was able to tell us that her wheelchair-bound husband was a half mile down the road with their truck stuck in the snow.
We listened in disbelief as she described crawling(爬行) along the road to our house because she knew they would freeze to death if they stayed in the truck. Through bright snow, on hands and knees, she felt her way along the highway edge to stay in a straight line.
My parents immediately called the highway police to come and locate her husband. They refused, saying they lacked equipment, and that it was unwise to risk any more lives. The woman cried and begged my family to rescue her husband in case he was frozen to death. Eventually, my father and brother determined to feel their way to a tractor(拖拉机) with chains on the wheels. They also carried a blanket and ropes.

To me, the world's greatest satisfaction is reaching down and lifting someone up. I believe in helping others in times of need. If we all help others, we can make a great impact in society. By joining hands, we can reunite the world.
You never know how big an impact you are making in someone's life. At 1 am, on Saturday, August 25, 2017,Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston, Texas. Before this, my family was preparing for flooding, packing food, first aid kits, and planning for the worst. While taking our cats and rabbits upstairs, my friend Tom called and explained their dilemma(窘境). Their area was issued a mandatory evacuation ( 强制疏散) and they had to leave.
With no place to stay, they were on the way to our house. All seven of them, 5 kids, including a newborn came in. Together we prepared their rooms and let them settle in.
After dinner, we turned on the news and saw Harvey coming in. That night none of us could sleep, listening to the wind blowing and rain thundering down. The four year -old told me, carrying the cat,“Saira, the kitty is scared. Can you make the rain stop, please?” With a forced smile, I helped her to bed and let the cat sleep with her. When we stepped out the next morning, we saw the nearby lake completely full of water, which was an amazing yet scary sight. Tom went a lttle further down and came back wet and explained that there was no way they could return home. They ended up staying that day and planned on leaving the next morning.
The next morning, the news reported how jammed (堵塞的) and flooded the roads were in his community. With tears and worried faces, they stayed for a week. Even my cat seemed to understand the terrible situation. Finally , when the roads were cleared, we all went to send them back. On the way, I saw the damage that the hurricane did.

A Special Appointment
Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital’s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift(轮班)went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.
At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.
The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.
The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. And Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild.
Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.
