Communication Arts Photography Competition

Most photo competitions come with cash prizes. This competition doesn’t. But it is still a respected competition. To be qualified (符合资格的), your images need to be first produced or published in a period from the previous March to this March. Each participant can present five images at most, and the images must be created for the same project. The winning images will spread worldwide in Communication Arts and on commarts.com.

Sony World Photography Awards

The competition provides winners with cash prizes as well as Sony equipment. Another great thing about this competition is its travelling exhibition. No matter which country you are in, you can always notice the winning images. Participants are allowed to present five to ten images. You will love this competition because it is free to enter, and you can choose from many different categories (类别).

Moscow International Foto Awards

The goal of the competition is to discover and recognize talented photographers worldwide and introduce them to the creative community in Russia. There is a discount on entry fees for students. Participants can enter up to twenty images, both individual images and photo series in any of its nine categories.

Nikon Small World

Being a long-standing camera producer, Nikon has been running this competition since 1975. This competition is all about photomicrography. Anyone can enter, and each participant can present three images. If you don’t feel like entering even if it is free, checkout the previous winners. The images are amazing, and that might just get you in the mood for application.

Know your angles.

Knowing your angles is the first step to taking a great picture. Maybe you like one side of your face better than the other. Maybe you’re completely symmetrical and can take a photo from the front.     2     So snap some selfies and start to get acquainted with your best angle.

Doing so will have you feeling confident and looking your best in your next shot.

Make sure the light is behind the camera.

Great lighting makes a great photo. The key is to make sure you’re in front of the light, and that the light is behind the camera. So, if you’re outside, make sure the sun is behind the camera.       3    

Take multiples.

    4     Take different photos of the same shot, so you have options when choosing which photo to keep. You’ll be surprised how often your facial expression changes in the same shot.

Invest in a good quality camera.

While smartphone cameras keep getting better and better, nothing beats the clear and crisp image quality of a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. The bad news? A good DSLR can cost anywhere from $400 on up.     5

【推荐3】In the 17th century, the Netherlands experienced a period of artistic prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age. During this era, enlightened artists found inspiration in Northern Renaissance painting techniques, resulting in masterpieces like Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer(约翰内斯·维米尔).

Known as the “Mona Lisa of the North,” this painting represents the best of Dutch art. Though Girl With a Pearl Earring is covered in mystery, it has become one of art history's most beloved paintings.

Specializing in genre painting - a type of art that employs scenes of everyday life as its subject - Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer is famous for his depictions(描绘 )of contemporary Delft, a city in Holland where the artist was born, lived, and died. Specifically, he is known for his depictions of domestic interiors and portraits of women, like the figure featured in Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665, which is Vermeer’s most well-known work of art. However, it did not attain international fame at its time of completion. That came about at the end of the 20th century, when it was featured in a special exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Girl with a Pearl Earring shows a young woman sitting before a dark backdrop. This stark and shallow background beautifully contrasts the figure's cream-colored skin and half crystal eyes, which are fixed on the viewer. In addition to an elegant blue and yellow turban (女用头巾 ), she wears a large, tear-shaped pearl earring. On the surface, this depictions seems to have the classic characteristics of a portrait, but it is actually known as a tronie(十七世纪荷兰的一种风俗肖像画) and does not refer to a specific person or place.

Today, Girl with a Pearl Earring remains one of the most famous paintings in the world. “When you think about the Mona Lisa, she is also looking at us, but she isn't engaging -she is sitting back in the painting, self-contained,” Tracy Chevalier, the author of the New York Times bestselling historical novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, points out. “Whereas Girl with a Pearl Earring is right there-there is nothing between her and us. She has this magical quality of being remarkably open and yet mysterious at the same time - and that is what makes her so appealing.”
