When I was still a young girl, I used to love going adventuring in the wild. One of my clearest memories from early childhood was when my dad took me along for a trip on a small path that went through the woods near our home. If he was not busy working, my dad would always take me down to the bush every weekend and together we would collect many sticks and stones to add to our collections.
I wasn’t like any ordinary girl as I loved the outdoors even as a young toddler (学步的儿童). I was never fond of colorful dolls and noisy tea parties. Soon I became old enough to venture out on my own. When I ventured forth through the Australian bush land I felt as if I were in heaven. It gave me great joy that I had never felt before. I thought there was nothing more beautiful than feeling the cool air gently brushing across my back. The leaves crunched (嘎吱作响) beneath my feet at every step. I felt as if I were home.
As the sun dipped slowly below the horizon, there was nothing more to do than to head back home. On my way I suddenly heard a screeching sound somewhere in the distance. It was the most horrible sound I had ever heard in my life. Sure enough, I just had to investigate, feeling curious to know what it was that had made this strange sound. In the dead of night, I headed towards where the strange sound came from. While seeking for it, I came across a river. Looking up and down the river; I couldn’t find a way to cross it. In much shame I decided to give up in the end. It was about one o’ clock in the morning and I thought my dad must have got worried.

Grandma Goodie, warm-hearted and caring, goes to see her granddaughters every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts with the same steps. First, she rings the doorbell. Then Vera and Gina run to open the door excitedly. Every time, Grandma Goodie brings wonderful gifts. Sometimes they are toys. Sometimes they are candies. After receiving the gifts, the whole room is full of the laughter and screams of the two.
One Sunday, Grandma rang the doorbell. Vera and Gina, who had been waiting since lunch, hurried down the stairs to open the door. “Darling, look what I have brought to you,” Grandma said. She pulled out a pack of cards and they couldn’t wait to rush into their room and began to play the cards cheerfully. They enjoyed themselves so much that the whole afternoon had passed before they realized it.
At the end of the day, Grandma kissed everyone and said her goodbyes. As she drove away, Vera and Gina heard their parents say that they would hold a birthday party for Grandma next Sunday. “Grandma has a birthday?” they thought, looking at each other in surprise. Both felt a little confused, “Grown-ups have birthdays?”
“We have to get her a present,” Gina decided. “But what?” asked Vera, “Grandma Goodie undoubtedly has everything!’’
They spent all week thinking, but nothing came into their mind.
On Sunday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Just as what usually happened, Grandma Goodie brought them beloved amazing gifts, which were some candies with good-looking covers. They extended their sincere gratitude to Grandma Goodie and quickly went back to their room to think about the gift for Grandma.
All through the dinner, the kids were silent. “What’s wrong with you? What makes you two so down and quiet?” asked Grandma.
“Grandma, we really wanted to give you something special for your birthday,” Gina said. “But nothing we thought of would do,” added Vera. Grandma Goodie smiled and held the kids in her arms. Then she said, “Oh, kids, don’t you know you two are the best gifts I could ever ask for?”

When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother helped practice my lines. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn't tell my mother what had ha ppened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) popping through the grass in bunches. I watched my mother bend down and pull a blossom up by its roots. She turned to me and said: “I think I’m going to dig up all these wee ds. Then we’ll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. “And that i s true of people too,” she added, “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that. Now, let’s go inside and talk about the lines.”

Once upon a time, there was a big mango (芒果) tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the treetops, ate the mangoes, and took a nap (小睡) under the shadow...He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. As time went by, the little boy grew up, and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree with a sad look on his face.“Come and play with me ,” the tree asked the boy.“I am no longer a kid. I don’t play around trees any more, ” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, I don’t have money...but you can pick all my mangoes and sell them so that you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the mangoes on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back. The tree was sad.
One day, the boy grown into a man returned. The tree was so excited.“Come and play with me ,” the tree said.“I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me? “Sorry, I don’t have a house, but you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the man cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t come back afterward. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted.“Come and play with me!” The tree said.“I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and didn’t come back for a long time.

My name is Bronson Layton. I am 23 years old. I am a college student, and I have a story that I feel should be shared with the world.
I come from a family that had never had a single record of autism (自闭症) until the day I was born. When I was two years old, my parents noticed some of my “out of ordinary” behaviors. I seldom played with other children. I often got angry easily and was difficult to deal with.
Soon after my parents noticed these signs, they took me to a child psychiatrist (精神科医生), who eventually informed them that I was diagnosed with a type of autism called PDD-NOS, a disorder that delays the growth of a child’s brain, which includes separating from friends or family and slow processing of speech, thinking and learning skills. My parents were initially shocked at this disease but they were prepared to positively change my life.
As I got older, I began to notice how the other kids were able to answer questions in class a lot faster than I could understand. From that year on, I received special treatment for my coursework, such as sitting in front of the class to read the board better, and taking longer time on tests.
In fourth grade, I joined my school’s marching band, something I never had any interest in, but my mom convinced me that it was a great way to not only make friends, but help gain more confidence in myself. I played the trumpet for two years, and after that, I played the horn.
At the same time during fourth grade, I discovered my talent for creative writing. I realized on the day I wrote my first Spider-Man story, my processed thinking and my imagination harbored (包含) a fundamental feature for my character: a hidden talent.
As the years passed, and as I got older, I helped my fellow classmates and peer groups write essays, and I even shared the original pieces I wrote with my class occasionally, though I was still unaware of my diagnosis.

A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body. I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold.
Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with case.

I wasn’t a popular kid in the first year of high school. In fact, I was awkward. I had no close friends. I mostly kept to myself with my head buried in a book. This was why I was so surprised when Ashley and I became friends the summer before the second year.
Ashley was quite popular. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never really talked much.
During summer school, we were both taking classes. The teacher paired us up on an assignment (任务). Ashley seemed unwilling to work with me at first, but she agreed because none of her friends were in the class. We met at the library to work on the project. When classes ended we continued to hang out.
I looked up to Ashley. I began listening to the music she listened to and wearing the clothes she wore. I quit reading and started watching the TV programs she watched.
When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, and agreeing when they had opinions though I disagreed with them. This continued for several months.
One day, I skipped (悄悄溜走) out of my last class a few minutes early so I could get a table in the canteen for our group. I sat down in the seat and began working on some homework, awaiting their arrival. Concentrating on my paper, I didn’t notice that they had sat down at the table behind me. Before I could say a word, I realized what they were talking about. I listened silently. “She’s such a loser,” one girl said. “She just follows you around trying to be you. She doesn’t have a personality of her own,” another girl added. Then Ashley herself replied, “I know. I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we’re best friends.” I was shocked and heartbroken. I didn’t know they thought of me in that way. I got up and ran out the door. The girls sat in silence as they realized I had heard the whole conversation.
