As the summer approaches, the difficulty of booking tickets to visit public museums has skyrocketed. As a result, there is scalping (黄牛倒票) and high-cost third-party reservation service providers.

When official channels for reservation fail, people have no choice but to pay sky-high prices to businesses to make reservations on their behalf or pay even higher prices for organized tour services in order to enter the museums. This clearly contradicts the original intention of the nation’s requirement for free access to museums, and there have been widespread complaints from the public. Therefore, it is necessary to simplify the ticketing mechanisms of museums now.

In 2021, the total number of registered museums nationwide reached 6,183, with 5,605 museums offering free admission. The imbalance between supply and demand has resulted in museums being extremely difficult to access, with tickets booked up in seconds after reservations open.

The fact that people are willing to visit museums demonstrates the strong cohesion and centripetal force of traditional culture. As the guardians of these treasures, museums should provide better ticketing services.

The relationship between individual reservations and group tickets for tour groups needs to be handled properly. Currently, many individuals are unable to secure reservations on their own and are forced to join expensive tour groups for visits. There is significant profit potential in the transition from free reservations to costly tour group sign-ups.

This has even become a source of revenue for some travel agencies and is linked to the museum’s own interests, as many group tickets include paid services within the museum.

Should tour groups be allowed to continue? If so, to what extent? This consideration should not merely be based on the museum’s operational purposes but also on benefiting society more broadly. Especially with the explosive growth of student trips during the summer, museums should provide more chances for free admission.

【推荐1】As a society we might want to rethink the time and money spent on education, so that these resources can benefit a greater percentage of the population. Ideally, both high schools and colleges can prepare individuals for the ever-changing roles that are likely to be expected of them.

High school degrees offer less in the way of preparation for work than they might, or than many other nations currently offer, creating a growing skills gap in our economy. We encourage students to go on to college whether they are prepared or not, or have a clear sense of purpose or interest, and now have the highest college dropout rate in the world.

We might look to other countries for models of how high schools can offer better training, as well as the development of a work ethic (勤奋工作的美德) and the intellectual skills needed for continued learning and development. I recommend Harvard’s 2011 “Pathways to Prosperity” report for more attention to the “forgotten half” (those who do not go on to college) and ideas about how to address this issue.

Simultaneously, the liberal arts become more important than ever. In a knowledge economy where professional roles change rapidly and many college students are preparing for positions that may not even exist yet, the skill set needed is one that prepares them for change and continued learning.

Learning to express ideas well in both writing and speech, knowing how to find information, and knowing how to do research are all-solid background skills for a wide variety of roles, and such training is more important than any particular major in a liberal arts college. We need to continue to value broad preparation in thinking skills that will serve for a lifetime.

Students also need to learn to work independently and to make responsible decisions. The lengthening path to adulthood appears exacerbated (恶化) by parental involvement in the college years. Given the rising investment in college education, parental concern is not surprising, but learning where and when to intervene will help students take more ownership of the outcomes of these increasingly costly educations.

A.Teaching skills to be used right after graduation only.
B.Giving little attention to those having difficulty learning.
C.Creating the highest dropout rate in the developed world.
D.Ignoring the needs of those only with high school education.
3. What characterizes a knowledge economy according to the passage?
A.Students majoring in liberal arts usually have difficulty securing a job.
B.New positions are constantly created that require people to keep learning.

【推荐2】As you drive the streets of Maine, you will often notice the various unwanted things people place outside, all with one extremely attractive word — FREE! And you will find most of them are serviceable, and often valuable!

So why don’t the state’s people just sell them? The answer is tied in with Maine’s belief in keeping it simple: It’s easier to give something away than to go through the trouble of advertising and then receiving phone calls, followed by the unavoidable bargaining. But there is also the light joy of seeing an item collected by someone who can use it.

What strikes me is the speed with which unwanted goods are taken away. There seems to be an army always ready to collect them at a moment’s notice.

Case in point: For years I had a large piece of old steel near my garage. I finally decided to pull it outside my house. No sooner had I turned my back than a pickup truck appeared. The driver jumped out and asked,“You are getting rid of this?” When I nodded, he lifted it, yelled a sincere “Thanks!” and drove away.

I have a guilty little secret. For me, the word “free” speaks of some deep desire to acquire, and to compete, in case someone else beats me to a free gift. I once carried a picnic table home. My son remarked, “but we already have a picnic table. Why did you get another one?” I replied, “Because it was free!”

As I write this, I am glancing out the window at a Windsor chair my neighbor has put out. The sign says FREE, but the chair is missing one leg. I could either repair it or use it for firewood. Hmm … Too late! While I hesitate, a senior citizen has pulled up. The chair is his, and I have a sense of loss.

1. How do people of Maine look at selling unwanted things?
A.It is a deep-rooted tradition.B.Selling such things is a real pleasure.
C.The process is too complex.D.It is a good chance to make money.
2. What does the author use his story about the old steel to show?
A.Things thrown away will quickly be collected.B.The driver needed the old steel very much.
C.People prefer to collect expensive goods.D.The old steel was particularly valuable.
3. What is the author’s secret?
A.He can’t give more gifts to his son.B.He shows much interest in free things.
C.He has a hobby of collecting tables.D.He wants to become a strong competitor.
4. Why does the author feel disappointed according to the last paragraph?
A.The chair is of no use.B.The chair is missing a leg.
C.He fails to get the chair.D.His neighbor rejects the chair.

【推荐3】Plagiarism is the act of representing another person’s words or ideas as your own. The offense may be as small as a sentence copied from a book. Or it may be as extensive as a whole paper copied—or bought—from somebody else.

Intellectual dishonesty is nothing new. The only difference now is that the Internet has made it much simpler to steal other people’s work. Yet the same technology that makes it easy to find information to copy also makes it easier to identify plagiarism.

Teachers can use online services that compare papers to thousands of others to search for copied work. The teacher gets a report on any passage that is similar enough to suspect plagiarism. These services are widely used. Turnitin.com, for example, says it is used in more than 100 countries and examines more than 130,000 papers a day.

Professional writers who plagiarize can be taken to civil court and ordered to pay damages. In schools, the punishment for cheating could be a failing grade on the paper or in the course. Some schools expel(驱逐) plagiarists for a term; others, for a full academic year. Some degrees have even been withdrawn after a school later found that a student had plagiarized.

Accidental plagiarism can sometimes result from cultural differences.

At Indiana University in Bloomington, 60 percent of students who use the Office of Writing Tutorial Services are non-native English speakers. The director, Joanne Vogt, says some have no idea that copying from published works is considered wrong. She says students from China, for example, may think they are insulting readers if they credit other sources. They believe that educated readers should already know where the information came from.

The more you give credit, the less you risk accusations of plagiarism. Any sentence taken directly from a source should appear inside quotation marks. And even if you put those sentences into your own words, you should still give credit to where you got the information.

1. According to the passage, what is the role of the Internet in Plagiarism?
A.The Internet discourages people from choosing proper papers to copy.

A.happen to be familiar with the content of the paper
B.make investigations concerning the paper among students
C.compare the paper with many others online to search for the copied ones
D.search journal and periodicals in the library for the original paper
3. Which of the following has NOT been mentioned as the punishment for plagiarism?
A.Fine of a certain amount of money.B.Withdrawal of some degrees.
C.Being forced to leave school.D.A failing grade.
4. The underlined expression “give credit” in the last paragraph probably means __________.
A.attribute what you’ve quoted from other sources to the original writers
B.praise the original writer for providing useful information
C.give the original writer a credit card for your copying the paper
D.admit that the original writer has a good reputation
