The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. I was working from home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible, snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home.
The route to the university takes about 30 minutes along the Trans-Canada Highway. After I finished my work, it was just past 4:30 p. m. I started heading back home.
Not soon after I left office, the snow started and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a “snownado,” or what the TV meteorologists call a Saskatchewan screamer, because it comes in fast and so windy that it screams.
The road condition was horrible, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I don’t know exactly when, I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field. The Trans-Canada Highway was in between two farms, each 500 yards away, I remember. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. They told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night, saying nobody was coming to get me until morning, at the earliest. It was now 6:30 p.m., I had to do something for help.

Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him, but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind. They went up a slope（斜坡）. They couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. They themselves wanted to run even though they didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar back, and Brady came running toward them.

A brave dog fought off a coyote (丛林狼) twice her size to protect her 10-year-old owner after it attacked them. Owner Lily Kwan, 10, said she had just heard her neighbors in her Toronto, Canada community on Tuesday warning people of a coyote going after children in the area when the animal started biting at her heels while she was walking dog Macy.
In the video captured by a neighbor’s security camera, Lily can be seen running down the sidewalk with her six-year-old rescue dog while the coyote followed them so closely.
“I thought, ‘Am I next, what is going to happen to me?’” Lily told the local newspaper. “I was screaming for help but no one heard me,” said Lily. “I saw this coyote trying to attack my dog and I tried to ring people’s doorbells and knock on people’s doors. Luckily, this one neighbor let me in.”
But while Lucy made it to safety, Macy wouldn’t follow her inside. Instead the little dog turned around toward the coyote. After briefly screaming Macy’s name, Lily ran onto the neighbor’s second floor. Macy could be seen fighting with the coyote, before it caught her and bit her in its mouth and shook her violently. I’m originally from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard for five seasons. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. I'd known Mike for a number of years. Mike had a rough upbringing. Maybe he wasn't the friendliest guard on the beach. I admit, I didn't really get along with Mike. The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. After failing to get through, he was getting angrier with the girl. So he cut the call and didn’t try.
“No, you have not paid. You must pay.”
“But please, I don’t have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please.”
Tears streamed down her face.
I had boarded a bus headed to Los Angeles. I was very excited about experiencing LA. My dream of visiting Disney Land was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth? It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Did she really not have any money? Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later?

With everything ready, our first project was to beautiful park near our houses, which looked a bit run-down. Ivan was in charge of painting the fence around, Monica cleared the lawn with a leaf blower, and I was responsible for repairing the benches where our neighbors usually sat at their leisure. After two weeks’ hard work, we felt stunned when stepping back and appreciating the clean and brand new small park. My heart swelled with pride because our efforts paid off.
