I was the kind of girl who always left my things out of order all round the room, while my roommate Jane was extremely organized. Each of her things was usually in the right place, but mine always somewhere or difficult to be found. She even labeled (做标记) everything. By contrast, I always looked for everything or even depended on her to help me.
Over time, Jane got neater and I got untidier. Most of the time, she would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Jane came into the room, looking extremely tired. Soon, I heard her shouting, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Before I knew it, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute if it were not because of a phone call from her mother. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away that her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up the phone, she quickly crawled (爬) onto her bed, crying. It was obvious that it was something she should not go through alone but at that time she had no one to share her sadness. All of a sudden, a strong feeling of pity rose up in my heart.

I opened the package containing individually wrapped Lego sets for my two boys from Lisa, who was a nurse in New Hampshire. We used to be total strangers, but an incident made us less strange.
Last August, we drove from our home in Washington, DC, to New Hampshire. It was just me, my husband, and our two kids out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away.
We had hiked about half a mile to a popular spot called Diana’s Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat huge rocks like an M. C. Escher drawing. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were splashing around. I watched as some younger parents nervously protected their toddlers away from the rocks edges, feeling grateful that I was out of that stage, for our kids, at six and eight, could navigate their physical space with more confidence. Don’t get me wrong: I was still terrified as I saw my two boys jump between the slippery rocks. But soon I relaxed and we were all having fun, splashing in the pools, my kids laughing as my husband swam under the cold running water. Then, seconds later, every fear I’d ever had rose to the surface.
I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in a fast-moving stream. I yelled at him to get out and he yelled back something that I couldn’t hear, and then he disappeared over the edge!
All I remember from the moments after is screaming, over and over! “Somebody help my son! ” I didn’t even know what help he needed, because I couldn’t force myself to look.
My husband was already sprinting down the rocks. I continued to scream for help. However, it did not work. Everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. Then she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away, ” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden.” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet place to read. Why not have a try?”

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________It was a freezing cold night, all quiet in the street. Tom was walking home after a tiring day from work, depressed and exhausted. Having worked overtime for nearly a month, his program was still rejected by his manager. Unfortunately his mom was diagnosed with lung cancer the other day. He felt his life couldn't be worse. As he walked, he thought seriously about giving up his present job and returning to his hometown. He thought in regret if he had not left his hometown to seek his fortune in the big city, his life wouldn't have been in such a hopeless situation.
City life had become too much for him. As he walked down empty streets under tall buildings, he felt very cold and frightened. He began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from his apartment, he heard a sound behind him. He felt frightened and turned back quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty, with no one in sight. All he saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made him nervous, so he started to run faster towards his apartment.
When he finally arrived at his apartment, he was out of breath but relieved. Not until he reached his apartment building and unlocked the door did he realize what the noise had been. It had been his wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly he was not cold or tired anymore. Without hesitation, he ran out of the door and back to the sidewalk where he had heard the noise. He having searched the sidewalk anxiously for about fifteen minutes, his wallet was still nowhere to be found.
