Long ago, in a city lived two boys, Ted and Nick. Ted was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and never did a day’s hard work. Nick was from a poor family, and often helped his parents when they were busy. Despite all of this, they always played with each other and had much fun. They became best friends.
As time went by, both of them grew up and went to different cities. Busy with their work and life, they didn’t have much time to meet each other and catch up.
One day, Nick fell seriously ill and had a fever. The doctor advised him to lie in bed, having a good rest. When Ted got to know it, he went to Nick’s house to meet him.
But with an important meeting to attend, he didn’t stay there for long and talk much with Nick. Instead he just took some money out of his pocket and gave it to his friend and left.
Nick felt very bad but didn’t say anything to him. After some time, Nick got well and worked hard to earn money day and night. He even found a part-time job.
Once Nick earned enough money, he went to Ted to return his money. Nick said, “Thank you for coming to see me when I was ill. And thank you for your money. Now I’ve earned enough.”
It happened that two months later Ted got ill and coughed again and again. He suffered a lot and felt so bad. The doctor suggested him bed rest after taking medicine.

Like every boy there ever was, what Kyle Hrenwood most wanted in this world was a dog. Unfortunately for Kyle, his mom didn’t think he was responsible enough.
The day before Kyle’s thirteenth birthday, he went to the park and found a woman sobbing. He was immediately worried. Was the woman hurt?
He bent over and said “Miss, Are you OK? Do you want me to call anyone?” The woman shook her head and said, “My husband died two weeks ago, and I feel alone. We’d been together for thirty years. I can’t stand the silence inside that house. I’m Deidre. What’s your name?”
Kyle introduced himself and they talked for a long time. Kyle’s encounter with Deidre left him very sad, and he decided to go home. “Mom,” he said. “I don’t want to get married.” “Why not?” asked Kyle’s mom. “What if you spend thirty or forty years with someone,” Kyle said. “And then he is dead, and you’re alone?” Mom said, “Then you’ll miss out on love. You see, if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. You may discover those thirty years alone are not worth living.”
The next day, he had one of the biggest surprises and greatest joys of his life—a puppy! That was when he remembered Deidre was alone in her huge house.
A few hours later, Kyle knocked on Deidre’s door holding the puppy. He said, “Today is my birthday, and my parents gave me this puppy. You need this puppy more than I do.” “Give my heart to an animal just so it can die in a few years’ time?” Deidre asked bitterly. “I don’t think so. I don’t need any more pain in my life!”
“My mom said that if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. too,” Kyle said.
“You’re right, Kyle!” Deidre said. “I do need this puppy. Maybe you can visit us both; I’ve never had a dog before and may need some advice!”
Over the next few years, Kyle and Deidre, and Max (that was the dog’s name) became great friends. Then Kyle’s dad was offered a job in another state, and the family moved away.

Kindness Is Precious
The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with tiny pieces of red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. “Oh, no, not the vase,”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America.” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment. I would have gladly said I did it. But you’ re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Would her mom yell at me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn’t stop playing those fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry, ”
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’ s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt(酸奶) I know you like. Let’s go! ” her mom said, She pointed at the open door.
“But before that. I need to tell you something,” I said.
“We can talk at the yogurt place,” her mom said.
“No. I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry.

The homemade book bag was sprawled (随意放在) across my bed. It appeared to have taken over the entire room. I closed my eyes for a second, trying to imagine the large shoulder bag gone. I opened my eyes again. It was still there. I knew that my mom had spent all day happily sewing. Worse still, I realized that the fabric (布料) was actually left over from a toy horse that my mom made for me when I was a baby. My mother had even quilted (缝制) little running horses along each side and wrote my name on one side to make certain that no one would be confused as to who owned this furry monster.
“Do you like it? If you don’t like it, you don’t have to use it,” Mom said.
“Oh no, Mom, I love it,” I lied, picking the bag up and rubbing (摩挲) the soft fabric against my face. The last thing I wanted to do was to hurt her feelings.
The next day I was to start seventh grade at a new school. I was nervous and excited. That first day at school I heard the whispers. “Have you seen the new girl? Did you see that big furry bag?” Then there were giggles.
Because I started school in the middle of the year, all of the lockers had been assigned to other kids. There was no storage available for me, so I was forced to haul all my stuff around in the oversized fuzzy bag. Wild stories flew back and forth about what I kept in the bag that never left my side. Drugs? some kids wondered. Clothes? Is she homeless?
There was nothing interesting in that bag, just my coat during cold weather, school books, papers and pens. Eventually, most students pretty much ignored me, but some of the kids teased me about the fuzzy horse bag. People grabbed at it, pretended to pat it like a dog and tried to toss their trash into it. My teachers didn’t seem to notice, probably because I didn’t ever complain or ask for help.
As the year progressed, I started to hate that bag. I blamed all my problems on it. I felt helpless and alone, miserable, and homesick for California and my old friends.
One day toward the end of the school year, my math teacher assigned each student a partner to work with on word problems. I was told to work with Debbie, a popular redheaded girl who was in several of my classes.

I would like to tell you a story about myself. It was a cold January night when I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. Tired, I almost had no time to relax. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. I said to myself, “It is time to say goodbye.” City life had become too much for me. I had expected to realize my dreams in such a big city but it seemed that I was abandoned. No one noticed me and no one cared for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small. It was freezing cold with wind blowing wildly. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from some possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. In spite of this, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk. Inside the wallet was the money that I depended on to pay for the rent this month. Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. What I desperately wanted was my missing wallet, my precious wallet, without which I couldn’t cover my expenses.

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. He could have used his phone for lighting, but it was dead after a long call with his mother. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels.
He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat.
Ahat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly. over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.

Jenny was a brighteyed, pretty fiveyearold girl.
One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace priced at$2.50. How she wanted that necklace, and when she asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I’ll tell you what. I’ll buy you the necklace, and when we get home we can make up a list of chores that you can do to pay for the necklace. And don’t forget that for your birthday Grandma just might give you a whole dollar bill, too. Okay?” Jenny agreed, and her mother bought the pearl necklace for her.
Jenny worked on her chores very hard every day, and sure enough, her grandma gave her a brandnew dollar bill for her birthday. Soon Jenny had paid off the pearls. How Jenny loved those pearls. She wore them everywhere to kindergarten, bed and when she went out with her mother to run errands.
The only time she didn’t wear them was in the shower. Her mother had told her that they would turn her neck green!
Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would get up from his favorite chair every night and read Jenny her favorite story.
One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?”
“Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you, ” the little girl said.
“Well, then, give me your pearls.”
“Oh! Daddy, not my pearls!” Jenny said. “But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. And you can have her tea party outfit, too. Okay?”
“Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss. “Good night, little one.”
A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, “Do you love me?”
“Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.”
“Well, then, give me your pearls.”
“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Ribbons, my toy horse. Do you remember her? She’s my favorite. Her hair is so soft, and you can play with it and braid it and everything. You can have Ribbons if you want her, Daddy.” the little girl said to her father.
“No, that’s okay.” her father said and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. “God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams.”
