A study has found that a fifth of teenagers consume energy drinks under the impression that they are good for health.

The new research questioned almost 4,000 high school students about the energy drinks and found that boys were much more likely to drink them.

Australia requires companies to label their drinks as “not suitable for children”, yet the findings published in a journal showed many teens still believed the drinks were beneficial.

The energy drink market is expected to grow to a $72 billion by 2024 and reach $108.4 billion by 2031.

Separate market analysis showed teens who drink energy drinks were more likely to show anti-social behaviour, including smoking, alcohol consumption and other things. Energy drink consumption was also found connected with headaches, stomachaches and especially insomnia, which is common among teens and makes them extremely sleepy and unable to concentrate on their study.

One 16-year-old girl said she did not make a habit of drinking the energy drinks, but sometimes bought one after school.

“I know they’re not great for you, but sometimes I get to the end of a school day and I am just very tired,” she said, “You get up at around 7 a.m., sit through a whole school day and then go home, only to study through to 11 p.m.—if you don’t have extra-curricular activities. It’s not something I recommend, but they taste good and sometimes I feel like I’d benefit from caffeine.”

Due to the fact that teenagers incorrectly believed energy drinks were beneficial for their health, the researchers suggested it was necessary to educate students on the health risks.

文章大意:本文为说明文,主要介绍了适量喝咖啡有助于预防某些癌症,降低某些疾病发生的风险。

【推荐2】For those of us who can’t live without a morning cup (or three), the latest assessments of the health effects of coffee are comforting. Its consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of all kinds of ailments, including Parkinson s disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, cirrhosis, liver cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer.

In fact, in numerous studies conducted throughout the world, consuming three 250 ml cups of coffee (of about 400 milligrams of caffeine, coffee’s main active ingredient) a day has been associated with reduced death rates. Published in 2015 in Circulation, a study of more than 200. 000 participants followed for up to 30 years found that those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day, with or without caffeine, were 15 per cent less likely to die early from all causes than were people who avoided coffee.

As a report published in 2020 by researchers at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health concluded, although current evidence may not recommend coffee or caffeine to prevent disease, for most people drinking coffee in a proper amount “can be part of a healthy lifestyle”. They found that consumption of three to five standard cups of daily coffee may in fact reduce the risk of several chronic (慢性的) diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“Despite various concerns that have cropped up over the years, coffee is generally remarkably safe and has a number of important potential benefits.” says Dr Walter C. Willett, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School.

Some of coffee’s other benefits come from polyphenols and antioxidants. Polyphenols can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes; antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory effects, can counter heart disease and cancer. But neither means coffee is beneficial regardless of how it’s prepared. When made without a paper filter (滤纸), as with a French press, espresso or Turkish coffee, harmful oily chemicals may come through.

When it comes to decaf, there are still some health benefits. As with caffeinated coffee, the polyphenols it contains have anti-inflammatory properties that may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and cancer.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了休闲快餐在美国越来越受欢迎而传统快餐的销量却下降这一现象。

【推荐3】Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the U.S. The restaurants are not “fast food.” They are known as “fast casual”.

Observers say Americans want more choices and fresh food when choosing where and what to eat. This trend is one reason why the fast food restaurant McDonald's has struggled financially.

McDonald's is one of the best-known restaurants in the U.S. and even around the world. Their ads say “I’m loving it.” But in the last quarter of 2014, McDonald's net income dropped by about $300 million. Worldwide sales dropped for the eighth month and even more than expected.

Bonnie Riggs is a restaurant expert. She says one reason Americans like fast casual food is because it's new. They are creative, they are innovative, they are something different and we like to try new things.

Ms. Riggs says Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year. Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants, like McDonald's. Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits. She says it's “growing quickly” because they meet consumers' needs.

“They know it’s being prepared while they wait, it's fresh, uh, fresh ingredients, quality food, good tasting food at reasonable and affordable prices.”

Many Americans still like their fast food, Ms. Riggs says, they just are not going as often. And, she says, some people buy prepared foods at stores and take them home to eat. Others like to cook at home.
