What are the best foreign films coming out in May? Here are four of the best new films to watch.

Hypnotic

Nothing is what it seems in Hypnotic, a mind-bending plot thriller from Robert Rodriguez. Ben Affleck stars as a police detective who is disturbed by the disappearance of his daughter. He is investigating a series of bank robberies (抢劫) when a mystery woman tells him about “hypnotics”: people who have the power to make others believe and do anything they want by saying a single sentence.

Released on 11 May in Australia, 12 May in the US &26 May in the UK

The Little Mermaid

Another month, another live-action-and-CGI remake of a classic Disney cartoon. But this one is more distinctive than most, because a black actress, Halle Bailey, is playing the title character, who was white in the 1989 cartoon. Besides, the film’s director argues that his version of The Little Mermaid is progressive in other ways, too. “She and Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, really teach the world about prejudice and about breaking down barriers and walls between these two worlds.” Also, there’s a singing crab (螃蟹).

On general release from 24 May

The Eight Mountains

All of the mountains in The Eight Mountains are unspoilt and breathtakingly beautiful. Some of them are in the Himalayas, but most are in the Italian alps, where Pietro, a city boy from Turin, befriends Bruno, the only child left in a remote rural village.

Released on 5 May in Japan, 12 May in the UK and Ireland, and 19 May in Spain and Finland

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

It’s been six years since Marvel’s second Guardians of the Galaxy film came out. Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and their partners are finally back for more adventures and this time they’re up against the High Evolutionary.

【推荐1】For a filmmaker who is not known for being very productive, Wong Kar-wai has certainly made headlines as of late. Next week, his brand-new 20th-anniversary restoration of In the Mood for Love will finally debut at the New York Film Festival followed by a nationwide tour that includes other recent restorations of his work, and an eventual Criterion box set release. Meanwhile, production on his long-gestating, decades-spanning drama Blossoms is underway with plans to make a TV version and a feature film. Now the director is returning to the universe of one of his most beloved films yet again.

Reports have surfaced from many Chinese media outlets that Wong Kar-wai has scripted a sequel to his beloved 1994 romance Chungking Express. Titled Chungking Express 2020 and set in Chongqing in 2036, the China Film Administration approved the script back in April, which means it can move ahead. Here’s a brief synopsis:

In 1990s Hong Kong, the lovelorn Policeman No. 223 encounters a blonde female assassin. They only spend a short time together overnight. The Policeman No. 663, getting over a failed relationship, has his life gradually changed by a “dreamer” who broke into his apartment. In Chongqing in 2036, young Xiaoqian and May are unwilling to be matched with their genetically-assigned partner, and are determined to find their own “destiny.”

While Wong Kar-wai has already technically expanded the story of Chungking Express with Fallen Angels––which was the planned third story of Chungking but ended up spinning off into its own feature––he’s clearly taking a different route than a direct follow-up. From that brief synopsis, it sounds like it’ll be a loose sequel, rather finding thematic connections similar to those that bond Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love, and 2046. He’s currently only on board as the screenwriter, so if a different director hops on, perhaps it could get made sometime in the near future. If the meticulous Wong Kar-wai wants to make it himself, then we’ll patiently wait to see if it ever comes to fruition, since the quest for perfection consumes time and patience. Just don’t expect cinematographer Christopher Doyle to return.

“To me Chungking Express and Fallen Angels are one film that should be three hours long,” Wong Kar-wai said in 1998. “I always think these two films should be seen together as a double bill. In fact, people asked me during an interview for Chungking Express: “You’ve made these two stories which have no relationship at all to each other, how can you connect them?” And I said, “The main characters of Chungking Express are not Fay Wang or Takashi Kaneshiro, but the city itself, the night and day of Hong Kong. Chungking Express and Fallen Angels together are the bright and dark of Hong Kong.” I see the films as inter-reversible, the character of Fay Wang could be the character of Takashi in Fallen Angels; Brigitte Lin in Chungking Express could be Leon Lai in Fallen Angels. All of their characters are inter-reversible. Also, in Chungking Express we were shooting from a very long distance with long lenses, but the characters seem close to us.”

1. Which film does the underlined part “one of his most beloved films” refer to?
A.In the Mood for Love.B.Chunking Express.
C.Fallen Angels.D.Days of Being Wild.
2. Which of the following is True according to the Passage?
A.The story of Chungking Express 2020 will directly follow that of Chungking Express.
B.It has been announced that Wong Kar-wai will direct Chungking Express 2020.
C.Currently, the script of Chungking Express 2020 has not been finished yet.
D.Wong Kar-wai intends to adapt Blossoms for both the small and the big screen.
3. The underlined word “meticulous” means “________”.
A.attentive to small detailsB.curious about surroundings
C.indifferent to others’ feelingsD.indecisive about contents
4. According to what Wong Kar-wai said in an interview in 1998, ________.
A.what the film Chungking Express really intends to emphasize is the city Chongqing itself
B.Chungking Express and Fallen Angels must be viewed as two separate cinematic works
C.the seemingly-unrelated films Chungking Express and Fallen Angels tell the same story
D.long lenses were employed during the shooting to highlight the actors and actresses

【推荐2】A few years ago, I had the honor of traveling through Accra, Ghana, an African city. As I rode down a main avenue, images grabbed my attention. On one side of the street, African children dressed in rags were playing in an open gutter (排水沟). On the other side of the street, there was a billboard advertisement featuring palm trees, a beach, and a white man lowering sunglasses from his eyes. If you are a fan of the American police shows, it’s not hard to see that the man in the ad is David Caruso, the righteous (正义的) policeman in Crime Scene Investigation: Miami.

The dichotomy of images was a reminder not only of the international impact of American pop culture, but of the specific influence of TV police shows.

In Hollywood, Tm a rare creature, a black man who has made a career writing for network police shows, having eventually created my own show, S.W.AT., for CBS. For me, writing television can never simply be about entertainment. The unjust death of the African American George Floyd keeps me wondering how the shows we are writing contribute to the understanding of the justice system, class, race, and the image of black men. I look at this not as a creative burden, but a necessary responsibility.

The past 60 years have seen numerous cop shows like Dragnet and Adam 12, where police, typically are beacons (灯塔) of morality who never do wrong while criminals are always people of color, particularly black men. This can make for wildly popular entertainment, but it also risks mistaking fantasies for reality. People watch TV to see heroes, but how are we defining who a hero is? For people of color, especially black people, the viewing experience is complex.

1. The images the author saw in Africa imply _________.
A.the unrealistic advertisement
B.TV police shows’ great popularity
C.poor education of African children
D.the background of American culture
2. What does the underlined word “dichotomy” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Contrast.B.Trend.C.Confusion.D.Principle.
3. What can we learn about the author?
A.He writes plays for pleasure.
B.He is very creative and influential.
C.He has created many shows including Dragnet.
D.He has a high sense of justice and responsibility.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to traditional TV police shows?
A.Ambiguous.B.Objective.C.Disapproving.D.Appreciative.

【推荐3】As I walked into the George Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theater, I felt as though I had stepped into a time machine. On the way to the traditional, old-timey box office, tons of vintage movie posters and the theater entrance made me feel like I was on Broadway. As everyone took their seats, an older gentleman who looked like he walked straight out of the 1920s gave the attendees a historical background of the film we were seeing-The Barker.

The film itself, which was released in 1928, is considered a “part-talkie”. Before films included synchronized (同步的) sound, films were played with live accompaniment and contained subtitles to add context. With the invention of synchronized sound, films slowly added talking dialogue in scenes throughout the film; these films were considered “part-talkies”.

The Barker, which explores the lives of carnival workers, is the talking debut (首次登场) of all of the main cast. The film was revolutionary not only for the technology but also for the actors. My film experience consists of mostly talkies, so when I finished The Barker, I felt like I witnessed something brand new for the first time.

The experience I had at Dryden Theater was unlike any movie-going experience I had ever had. The music, the film, and the atmosphere itself were completely unique! Since viewing films has gradually been switched to streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has both increased the accessibility of films and stripped us of reliance on a social experience to watch a movie-one that attending The Barker reminded me of.

“Barbenheimer”, a phenomenon that contrasts the obvious differences in the recently released movies Barbie and Oppenheimer, allowed us to return to the movie-going adventure. Finally, everyone wanted big screens and surround sound rather than the tiny screens in bedrooms. More importantly, we were all able to interact with a piece of content alongside other people. “Barbenheimer” brought back the pastime of going to the cinema-one that I think we should continue to engage in. I say we take a page out of the 1920s playbook and return to the cinema.

1. Who helped the audience know better about the historical background of The Barker?
A.A star who was cast in the movie.
B.A man who had a look of the past.
C.An elderly gentleman from the 1920s.
D.A staff member working at the box office.
2. Which of the following is true of “part-talkies”?
A.The Barker is a “part-talkie”.
B.“Part-talkies” are totally silent.
C.“Part-talkies” involve live accompaniment.
D.The films before The Barker are “part-talkies”.
3. What does the underlined word “stripped” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Accused.B.Informed.C.Robbed.D.Warned.
4. What does the author suggest?
A.Having more big screen experiences.
B.Interacting more with people around us.
C.Engaging in “Barbenheimer” and watching The Barker.
D.Reading more vintage playbooks before watching movies.
