The traditional impression of libraries as places for quiet reading, research, and borrowing books is outdated. There are three areas where libraries work as energetic centers of America’s towns: technology, education, and community.
Technology
Many people rely on libraries for their computer and Internet use. According to a 2015 Pew Research Center report, more than a quarter of Americans who had visited a public library in the past year had used a computer, the Internet, or a WiFi connection there.
More ambitiously, libraries have also begun offering “makerspaces” shared workspaces that provide technological tools and are designed to facilitate teamwork. I recently toured the makerspace at Washington, D.C.’s flagship Martin Luther King Jr. Library. A group of hobbyists, businesspeople, and a mom with her homeschooled preteens were learning about tools like 3-D printers, laser cutters, and wire benders. Miguel Figueroa, who directs the Center for the Future of Libraries at the American Library Association, says makerspaces are part of libraries’ expanded mission to be places where people can not only consume knowledge, but create new knowledge.
Education
In my conversations with librarians around the country, the most urgent topic was the education of America’s youngest children. Patrick Losinski, the CEO of the Columbus, Ohio, metropolitan library system, told me that when a 5-year-old walks into kindergarten, takes a book, and holds it upside down, “you know there is no reading readiness there.” I heard of many projects like Books for Babies, which is run by Friends of the Library in tiny Winters, California: Volunteers offer new babies a box with a T-shirt, a cap, two books, and an application to join the library.
In Charleston, West Virginia, despite recent funding losses that severely cut library staff, librarians still provide materials to teachers all across the 900-square-mile county. In Columbus, Mississippi, the library gives high-school students access to Civic War-era documents slave sale records, court cases, and secrets of the community making real the history of their state.
Community
The library in West Hartford, Connecticut, offers conversational-English classes for immigrants. The library in Seattle provides citizenship classes. The library in Duluth, Minnesota, has a seed-lending program for local gardeners. In libraries, I have practiced yoga, drunk in coffee shops, and watched youngsters with laptops arrangetheir virtual start-up offices at long reading-room tables.
1. What is the passage mainly about?A.How libraries are designed. | B.How libraries have developed. |
C.How libraries function in new ways. | D.How libraries become a popular spot. |
A.Make T-shirts. | B.Work together. |
C.Visit exhibitions. | D.Publish books. |
A.They run short of funds. | B.They help children learn history. |
C.They provide children with 3-D printers. | D.They offer readers sports facilities. |

The European ship was first observed in 2009,when a sonar (声呐) exploration by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) indicated a large object in the area. However, it was not until early 2019 that researchers from Soton and MMT found evidence of the sunken ship using underwater robotic cameras.
When the team observed the pictures of the 60-foot-long shipwreck, they were surprised to discover it was 99 percent complete. The scientists considered that the wreck’s good condition is due to its place in the Baltic Seabed, where the oxygen levels are low. Oxygen is key to most ocean life’s survival. Therefore, such an environment where the shipwreck stays reduces or completely removes the creatures that feed on rotting wood.
So although this ship is contemporary to the times of Christopher Columbus, it shows a remarkable level of preservation after 500 years at the bottom of the sea. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz, who led the MMT effort, said, “It’s almost like it sank yesterday. It’s a truly astonishing sight.”
The scientists are unsure what let the ship sink. However, the ship’s guns, which are in their “ready to fire” positions, indicate it may have been the victim of a naval battle. Since the ship dates back to the early 16th century, historians predict it may have sunk during Sweden’s three year independence war with its Danish rulers between 1521 and 1523.Alternatively,it could also have been involved in the border dispute (争端) between Russia and Sweden from 1554 to 1557.
The ship is by far the best-preserved shipwreck ever found from the Age of Exploration, when Europeans explored the world by sea.
What’s more exciting is that the ship is similar to the Pinta and La Nina, which Columbus famously sailed toward North America. The scientists, who continue to observe the shipwreck hope the boat’s design will expose some of the technologies available to the Italian explorer during his 1492 voyage of discovery.

They were discovered during an archaeological excavation (挖掘) in the agricultural fields of Be’er Milka, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced on Thursday. The eggs’ location suggests that they were collected by the prehistoric (史前的) desert nomads (游牧民) who used the campsite, according to a press release from IAA, and further lab analysis will provide more information about their uses and ages. Although the nomads did not build permanent structures at this site, the finding allows us to feel their presence in the desert. The campsites were covered by sand, keeping the eggs exceptionally well-preserved.
Ostriches were common in the region until they became extinct in the wild during the 19th century. Their eggs were beautifully decorated and were prized items during the Bronze and Iron Ages (青铜和铁器时代). As well as being used as decorative items, ostrich eggs were also used as a source of food. One ostrich egg has the nutritional value of about 25 normal chicken eggs.
While ostrich eggs are not uncommon in excavations, the bones of the large bird are not found. This may indicate that in the ancient world, people avoided dealing with the ostrich and were content with collecting their eggs.
1. What did archaeologists find in Israel?A.Ostriches. | B.Burnt tools. | C.Ostrich eggs. | D.The bones of ostriches. |
A.The trees. | B.The fire pit. | C.The campsites. | D.The sand. |
A.To provide shelter for them. |
B.To protect agricultural fields. |
C.To get food or decorations. |

This ancient creature had four functional legs, so it could dwell on both land and in water. Ironically, Egypt’s Fayum Depression, the desert where the fossil was discovered, was an ocean millions of years ago.
Researchers believe this fossil is an example from an era when land animals were adapting to marine life. Modern whales evolved from deer-like land mammals over the course of millions of years, and this unique whale could travel across land and swim in the ocean.
The new species is named Phiomicetus Anubis because the whale’s skull resembles the Egyptian jackal-headed god of death, Anubis. Scientists have also been able to recover the whale’s partial skeleton. They inferred that the ancient whale was about three meters in length and weighed 1,300 pounds. The mammal had a long mouthful of teeth, which indicated that it fed on smaller mammals and other sea life.
After analyzing the remains at Mansoura University in the Nile River Delta, scientists supposed that P. Anubis is the oldest semi-aquatic whale species found in Africa. Although the fossil itself was discovered thirteen years ago, researchers just completed the analysis and made the exciting announcement of a new species. Other whale fossils with legs have been found before, but the P. Anubis is the earliest, of its kind found in Africa.
1. Where did the researchers find the fossil?A.In the India Ocean. | B.On the Rock Islands. |
C.In the Fayum Depression. | D.In the Nile River Delta. |
A.Its weight. | B.Its length. | C.Its teeth. | D.Its legs. |
