When I first heard about the improv classes, I was torn. I feared getting on stage and performing in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to improve my communication ability and gain confidence thinking on my feet.
During our first class, we learned the key concept of improv: “yes, and”. If someone says that rhinos are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We don't question the logic; we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. To do this effectively, we have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv happens when performers stay open to different possibilities. Over time, I started to enjoy our classes. I also became better at listening and communicating clearly in the moment.
That training came in handy 6 months ago, when I was giving a seminar about my science research. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn't grow out of the information I had presented. Instead of getting perplexed, I used that approach, and it helped me find an appropriate answer.
Last year, I used that approach when dealing with confusing data. Instead of getting discouraged, I kept exploring the data and ended up identifying a new type of cell — one that wasn't behaving as expected. If I hadn't stayed open to the possibility that the results were real, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my Ph.D. program so far.

“If I ever come across a genie, I have to be ready,” she says. “They have to be smart wishes.” Wishes are the theme of her first graphic fantasy novel, Shubeik Lubeik, published this week by Pantheon Books. The book follows Shokry, a grocer in Cairo, Egypt, as he tries to sell off three wishes he inherited from his father. He meets three Egyptians whose lives can be radically transformed by the power of a wish.
The book highlights the fantastical — there are dragons, talking donkeys and a ridiculous scene where someone wishes for a BMW and gets a toy car. But the story is also remarkably grounded in the realities of modern life in Egypt. It touches on the life of the poor, who must navigate complicated processes to get what they need. One character, a poor woman named Aziza, picks up trash, scrubs floors and works numerous jobs to buy a wish — only to find that before she can use it, she must register her wish with Egypt’s Ministry of Wishes. When she finally gets in front of a government worker, they assume she has stolen the wish and confiscate(没收)it. Mohamed writes, “What stands between you and your wish could be a government employee with paperwork on the fourth floor.”
Mohamed, 28, who was born and raised in Cairo, said, “It’s just the way I’ve experienced the world. So it’s the way I built my own world.” The book won the top prize at the Cairo Comix Festival, an annual comics convention for cartoonists in Egypt and the Middle East.

Books and e-books share lots of similarities. They are both items created by great minds.
A disadvantage of e-book devices is that people tend to get distracted (分心) when they’re using one, as many devices often have apps or games on them.
Whichever you prefer, both books and e-books are just a way to help us gain knowledge and get to know other people’s experiences. They are both necessary, so it’s too early to say which one will disappear.
A.But they have differences as well |
B.They take less space than books |
C.Indeed our lives are formed by what books we read |
D.This is similar to how the words in books manage to live on |

Two weeks after stopping our bedtime readings, though, my older daughter asked whether we could start again.
Reading aloud to children improves a young mind’s cognitive development (thinking, problem-solving, decision-making) and reduces behavior problems, research shows. As with playing board games, reading to them increases concentration and attention spans.
And yet, too many of us stop before the kids want us to.
The conversations children have around themes and ideas in books help them make sense of the world. And it’s a joyful way to connect and be close with your kid. While reading in bed, my daughters and I lie next to each other, sometimes leaning into one another.
A.She simply enjoyed the practice too much to let it go yet. |
B.When she was a young child, we began a nearly daily reading called Milk & Books. |
C.We were disappointed but respected her. |
D.Reading aloud was significantly beneficial to children and their parents. |
E.In Australia, more than a third of children aged 6 to 1l whose parents had stopped reading to them wanted to continue. |
F.We laugh and are surprised together and have deep conversations about the novels. |
G.It’s one of the most virtuous circles of parenting and teaching. |
Dear Harry,
You ask me whether you should spend the next three years at university,or get a job.I will give you three different answers
Answer A.You are ambitious.Your sights are set on going to the top,in business or the government. In today's high-tech times, big companies cannot be managed by uneducated amateurs.Even the middle managers are at a disadvantage unless they get a university degree and an MBA.Same thing in government.
Anyway, you are too young to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life.If you spend the next few years at university, you will get to know the world—and yourself—before the time comes to choose your career.
Answer B.Stop wasting your time on academia(学术界).Stop subjecting yourself to the boredom of textbooks and classrooms.Stop cramming for exams(应考)before you acquire a strong love for reading.
The lack of a college degree will only be a slight influence on your career. In Britain, you can still get to the top without a degree. What industry and the government need at the top is not experts but leaders. The character traits(性格特点)which make people scholars in their youth are not the traits which make them leaders in later life. You put up with education for 12 boring years.
Answer C.Don't judge the value of higher education in terms of careemanship.Judge it for what it is—a priceless opportunity to furnish your mind and enrich the quality of your life.My father was a failure in business, but he read Horace in the washroom until he died, poor but happy.
If you enjoy being a scholar, and like the company of scholars,go to a university.Who knows, you may end your days as a Regius Professor. And bear in mind that British universities are still the best in the world. You have a first-class mind.Stretch it.If you have the opportunity to go to a university, don't pass it up.You would never forgive yourself.
Tons of love,
David

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all comers of the world to fight in this “World's Biggest Food Fight”.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 12 Noon a number of trucks haul tomatoes into the centre of the town. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.
After an hour the fighting ends. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves. Once flushed (冲洗), the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
The Rules of La Tomatina
· Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants.
· Do not rip other people's T-shirts.
· You must crush the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact.
●As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
· Wear closed shoes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops,you may get hurt.
● Ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with. A good tip is to tuck your T-shirt into your shorts to keep the bottom pait of your T-shirt clean and dry.
·If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera!
