A French cook, Laurent Veyet, is preparing foods with something surprising: insects. Recently, the European Union has approved some kinds of insects as an acceptable food product. Insects provide many nutritional substances and are an environmentally friendly food source.
The food that Veyet prepares with insects is not for those with little bravery. However, what the cook is preparing may point to the future of feeding a growing world population. One of his foods is a prawn salad with yellow mealworms (粉虱). It includes insects on a bed of vegetables with grasshoppers (蚱蜢) covered in chocolate, a food usually meant for sweets. The restaurant is located in Paris, where eaters who are ready to attempt something different accept the unique foods.
The cook talked about the perfect meal for first-timers. He was preparing a pasta (面食) made with crushed mealworms, sweet potatoes and young insects. He said, “there are some really interesting flavors. Not many people could say they don’t like that.”
The European Food Safety Agency, EFSA, in January said the mealworm is acceptable for humans to eat. By May, EFSA approved its sale on the market.
Soheil Ayari was eating with his two daughters. He was fond of the food. He said, “I feel like I am in a traditional restaurant.” He said only the idea behind what he ate was different. He continued to say, “honestly, the tastes are very similar to traditional food.” Ayari’s young daughter also enjoyed the food: “it’s environmentally friendly and it’s good.”
Stefan De Keersmaecker is a health and food safety spokesman at the European Commission. He said, “Insects are nutritious, and they can help us change to a more healthy and sustainable diet and food system. However, there are two battles Veyet must win. He needs to win over public opinion and learn how to combine the taste of insects with other foods.”

But in recent years environmentalists have been warning that gas stoves are bad for the climate and not so great for our health, either. New studies published this year have heightened health worries about poisonous fumes (烟气) in our kitchens. Is the evidence sufficient to shift our cooking habits?
The big surprise in one new study, conducted by environmental scientists at Stanford University, is the amount of unburned gas that leaks into kitchens when a stove is off. They found that more than three quarters of methane (甲烷) that escapes from a stove does so when it is not in use, most likely through imperfect pipe fittings. Second, there are the pollutants created by burning when a stove is on, most notably nitrogen oxides, which can upset the lungs.
Drew Michanowicz, a senior scientist at PSE Healthy Energy, a nonprofit research and policy group, said, “A lot of us work at home now. We take about 20, 000 breaths a day, and my stove is like 10 feel away from me. What else is in natural gas?” Michanowicz also frets that as more people weatherize their homes and close windows, they are reducing air exchange, which means indoor pollution will be worse.
Not surprisingly, the American Gas Association has criticized both studies, saying the levels of VOCs found in the Boston study are “reassuringly low”.
What is the average home cook to make of all this. They might follow Michanowicz, who bought an induction burner (电磁炉) and does much of his cooking on it. As for me, I’m making some changes. I’ve switched to an electric kettle for boiling water, and despite its annoying noise, I now use the exhaust hood (吸油烟机) over my stove-something only about 25 to 40 percent of people say they do. And weather permitting, I’ll open a window.

Bearing the tag “Chinese food”, the video not only showed off the chef’s superb skills in making Chinese dishes, but it also got netizens abroad wanting to get a taste of China’s unique food culture.
Although the video was nothing master-level, just a rather standard homemade fried potato dish, it received more than 200,000 likes after only three days of posting. In addition to praising the chef, commenters wondered why such a simple Chinese dish could look like a fancy cuisine that had been made through tons of effort. “Even the most basic Chinese dish needs to have three elements: color, smell and taste. For example, color not only requires a chef to have sharp eyes, but also valuable experience,” said Wang, an experienced Chinese chef in Guangzhou.
Chinese cooking is not the only type of content covered by the tag. Other popular videos under the tag include “odd food” challenges, traditional Chinese dishes and Chinese snack tasting, the latter of which has become particularly popular among young omnivore vloggers (video bloggers) living in a world of continually expanding cultural globalization.
“I have been a fan of Chinese food ever since my Chinese friend cooked me di san xian at university. I was surprised by the dish’s taste and its look, which was very different from my home food, but felt it was very familiar to me because I noticed we share similar cooking skills,” said Bianca, an Italian Asian food fan.
“I started my channel by recording my roommate tasting my cooking. These videos got likes and comments gradually. Seeing some people commenting in German or English and saying ‘I want to try it’, I felt these videos can narrow the gap between the two cultures,” said Mr. Bean, a vlogger on Bilibili who promotes Chinese cooking.

An underwater volcano next to the Kingdom of Tonga erupted in early September, causing lava (岩浆) to rise to the surface. The steam (蒸汽) and water out of it then formed into a new land mass, measuring at over eight acres.
The Home Reef seamount is the place where the volcano erupted on September 10th, 2022. NASA’s Earth Observatory noted that it took about eleven hours for the land mass to rise out of the water. The agency published an image that has spread on social media that shows the size of the new unnamed island.
Over the weekend, the Tonga Geological Services stated the island was about 8.6 acres and measured about 50 feet above sea level. While volcanic activities continued to plague the Home Reef, only a couple of neighboring the Tonga islands were at low risk. “All sailors are, however, advised to sail beyond 4 kilometers away from Home Reef until further notice,” officials with the Tonga Geological Services noted in a statement.
Underwater volcanic eruptions near Tonga that led to new islands, although uncommon, have happened a few times over the last two centuries, including in 1852, 1857, 1984 and 2006. However, NASA’s Earth Observatory showed that many of these volcanic islands existed only for a few months or years.
“Islands created by undersea volcanoes often last only for a short time, though very few sometimes last for years. Home Reef has had four recorded periods of eruptions, including events in 1852 and 1857,” the agency noted. “An island created by a 12-day eruption from nearby Late’iki volcano in 2020 was washed away after two months, while an earlier island created in 1995 by the same volcano remained for 25 years.”

According to Hubei Daily, hole-in-the-wall restaurants focus more on delicious food over decor (室内装潢) or service. Now, hole-in-the-wall restaurants are often found in the corners of small lanes and alleys (小巷) in different parts of a city. The most popular hole-in-the-wall restaurants usually have a history of more than 10 years and are run as family businesses.
A university student, Zhou, living in Wuhan, tried a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with her friend after other friends recommended it to her. She ordered 3 dishes, which only cost 64 yuan. “The food tastes good, and it's cheap,” she told Hubei Daily.
Wang Hongjie, a 16-year-old from Chengdu, likes the experience of eating at hole-in-the-wall restaurants. “Due to the limited space, diners at small-in-the-hole restaurants usually need to eat meals with strangers at the same table. This gives people the chance to talk with each other, creating a sense of hustle and bustle (烟火气),” she said. “But at internet-famous restaurants, diners just quietly enjoy their meals. It’s boring.”
Even so, Zou Zhiping, a professor at Hubei University of Economics, said that due to resource limitations as well as a lack of food safety awareness, hygiene (卫生) and food safety issues are more common at hole-in-the-wall restaurants. To solve these problems, Zousuggested that the local government provide training and support for these restaurants.
