Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair 2024
The Novel Fair is an annual competition initiated by the Irish Writers Centre (IWC). Described by The Irish Times as “A Dragons’ Cave for writers”, each year the Fair aims to introduce up-and-coming writers to top publishers and literary agents.
The Prize
The twelve winners will have the opportunity to present the summary of their novels directly to industry professionals. Leading publishers and agents will be invited by the IWC to meet these writers in person or through a series of online meetings. To get fully prepared for the meeting with publishers and agents, the winners will receive a place in a workshop on “How to Promote Your Novel”, two weeks in advance. Also, applicants who are longlisted (初选) but do not make it to the shortlist of twelve will have their works evaluated and criticized by the judging panel.
How to Enter
Entry fee for application is £ 55 (Members of IWC can enter for a discounted fee of £ 45). This competition only accepts manuscripts (原稿) for novels. Applicants are required to send a summary within 300 words and up to five chapters of their novels, which should be 10,000 words (+/-10%). Manuscripts should be submitted online. There is a limit of one entry per applicant.
Entries are welcome from anywhere in the world. Before entering the competition, please ensure that you have read the Novel Fair Terms & Conditions 2024 very carefully as the Fair is open to only novelists who have never published work previously. There are hardly any annoyances and the kid seems enjoying the experience. The parental controls are, mildly put, inadequate. I would anticipate being able to define lock-down timings and limit usage duration for a device targeted at kids.

2. This is such a lifesaver! My son reads books constantly. We were doing our best to buy books and use the library, but it was hitting our wallets hard. With the Kindle Free Time included with this Kindle kids edition, he has access to thousands of books. I get to set the age appropriate limits on the book access. As we live on a tight budget, it’s great to have a one-year free subscription to Free Time.

3. Just received this device today and I’m ready to throw it out the window. Navigation is horrible and even customer service admitted that they don’t know how to help. It’s a nightmare trying to get your free subscription set up as they just keep redirecting you to set up a 30-day trial and be charged after. I’ll be cancelling everything and sending this back as soon as possible.

4. This is a reader’s kindle. We want our children to read—not play video games all day. From the moment we received this device as a gift, our kids had immediate access to 55 books that we had purchased through our Amazon account. Now they can carry around a whole library of books. Not to mention all of the free out of copyright material that is available.

It is not often that a woman can thank personally the inventor of devices that make life livable for her. I feel that it is my duty to tell you how much we women of this small town owe a lot of thanks to you. I am an officer in the District Women’s Club and my husband is a doctor.
We have a large house so as I do practically all my own housework, my duties are many. Still, I enjoy my housework and do not feel that I entirely lose out on life’s pleasures. Right now, I hear my washing machine chugging (洗衣机运转声音). The house is lighted by electricity. I cook on an electric stove and wash dishes in an electric dishwasher. I clean the house with electric cleaners. When I rest, I take an electric massage(按摩). I forget I’m living in a tiny town. But I’m reminded when the automatic alarm in my stove rings and know my dinner is now cooking.
The doctor comes home. He finds a wife not tired and dissatisfied. Instead, he sees a woman waiting, who has worked faithfully. She is now rested and ready to serve the tired man and discuss things of the day. Possibly he brings home a guest without warning, but electricity saves the day for the hostess.
Please accept my appreciation, Mr. Edison, from the most truly grateful of women. I know you must have received the thanks of other women before but I believe men are like women after all and like to know that their work is appreciated. I do think the world is often not thankful enough for such work and the value of it.
Sincerely
Mrs. W. C. Lathrop
