Lilly was on her way to meet friends when she noticed an older woman struggling to navigate the railroad tracks in a wheelchair. Her efforts were clearly hindered by the uneven surface and the weight of the chair, and she appeared to be making little progress. Without hesitation, Lilly jumped out of her car and rushed over to assist. However, their attempts failed as both Lilly and the elderly woman fell twice, struggling to get out of harm’s way.

As they scrambled (爬) to their feet, a deafening horn (喇叭) blast rent the air, followed by the blinding flash of lights. A train was barreling down the tracks, its approach growing ever more urgent.

“He was honking his horn and the lights started flashing,” Lilly recalled, her voice trembling as she spoke. “I was like, ‘Oh no, we gotta go now!’”

With adrenaline (肾上腺素) pumping through her veins, Lilly summoned all her strength and managed to pull both herself and the elderly woman to safety just second s before the train thundered past. The narrow escape left her shaken to the core, her heart pounding in her chest.

“It’s a near-death experience,” she said, her voice breaking. “And I’ve never really been that close to death before.” The railroad company later informed her that they had been mere inches away from being struck by the train, a revelation that sent shivers down her spine.

Ardmore Police Chief Jereme Robison, who was called to the scene, recounted the incident to WKRN with a mixture of amazement and relief. “She barely gets herself out of the way, and the train actually still clips the lady’s leg and spins her around,” he said. “I mean, it was like a split second. They almost died.”

On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 13, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart sank.

I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag. “Is everything OK?” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.” “I got some bad news yesterday,” I told her. “I lost my job!” “Oh no,” Kristil said. “Well, I have $100 from Grandma I can give you.” “Absolutely not,” I told her. Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my moneymaking pursuits. I headed to the pawnshop (当铺) with a ring set in 14-karat gold that my mother had given me a decade earlier.

“Best I can do is $70,” the owner said. “The stones are worthless; we’re only interested in the gold.”

Next was the antiques store. I sold six Precious Moments figurines for $150 and ended the day $220 richer.

Over the next week, I furiously applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the world was closing in on me.

On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated.

Back at home, I glanced out of the window. It had been snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a slim woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor Sister Esther Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago.

Disappointed and upset, Tom found his money box empty. The coins lying on the bed added up to $36.22. But the bike he wanted cost $88. Where and how could he get the rest of money? He knew his fellows all had bikes, without which he couldn’t hang around with them on weekends. He thought about asking his parents for money, but soon gave up because he knew it wouldn’t happen.

Earning money seemed to be the only way. So he had to find a job first. He decided turn to Mr Brown for advice, who usually had opinions in most things. “Well, you can start right here, the floor needs cleaning and my car needs washing.” Then Tom’s parttime jobs began. For two months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by a variety of jobs people found for him to do. He could hardly remember how many cars he had washed and how many windows he had cleaned, but he knew his dream would soon come true because the money kept increasing. The day finally came when he counted all the money he earned and found nearly 100 dollars. He couldn’t wait to go down to the shop to buy his dream bike.

It was by hard work that he bought the bike he had been dreaming of. So he cherished it very much. He had achieved what he thought was impossible, and that was more valuable than the bike.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was in the fifth grade, my parents and I moved abroad. One day, when reading the newspaper, I learned my hometown had just gone through a big natural disaster. And my hometown couldn’t get enough new school supplies for kids. I wondered how the kids were going to school if they didn’t have basic things like desks and books.

That same year, my school received new desks. The hundreds of old ones, which were still in good condition, were put into storage (贮存). And I learned there was little chance that the old desks would be used by my school again. I thought it was a waste. If my school really didn’t need the desks, could I send them to the kids in my hometown? When I told my parents about the old desks at my school and what I thought could be done with them, they loved the idea.

Then, we asked a leader of my school if the school could have the desks donated to my hometown. She said she needed to get some other people’s agreement. One day later, she gave us the answer. It was “yes”! But she wasn’t sure whether we were able to move the desks to such a far place. Desks are very heavy and it would cost a lot to ship them.

But my parents and I wouldn’t give up. We began e-mailing organizations that worked for children’s rights, asking for their help. My parents’ friends also helped us by e-mailing shipping companies, hoping they’d agree to ship the desks to my hometown.

Eventually, our efforts paid off. With the help of some organizations, a shipping company promised to ship the desks to my hometown through one of their big containers. And they’d let us use their trucks to transport the desks to the container. But we needed to load (装上) the desks onto the trucks and then carry the desks from the trucks to the container ourselves.

Paragraph 1:

When the day arrived, my parents and I started to move the desks onto the trucks.
