In many movies, the clothing the actors wear is an important part of the story. In Rome, there is a workshop that has been a big part of Italian and international film history for 60 years.
Tirelli Costumes in Rome’s Prati neighborhood is an atelier, a business that makes special clothing and costumes. It has earned the nickname the “Oscar tailor’s shop” for its incomparable work in film costume design.
Umberto Tirelli started the shop in November 1964. It has been behind 17 Academy Awards for best costume design. Most recently, its workers helped create the costumes for Ridley Scott’s movie Napoleon. The film’s costume designers were nominated (提名) for an Oscar that will be decided at the Academy Awards in Hollywood this weekend.
At the start, the shop had “a sewing machine, two cutters and two other seamstresses,” Trappetti said.
After the 1984 costume design Oscar for Amadeus, Tirelli could have accepted many international projects “because the market was immediately interested,” Trappetti said. But Tirelli, who died in 1990, was not sure. Trappetti remembered him saying, “I’m not going to America If America wants, America will come looking for me.”
Over 60 years, the tailor’s shop has created more than 300, 000 costumes that are now stored near Rome. Costume designers come for ideas and historical information. They also come for hand-cut, hand-sewn creations by the team of Tirelli workers.
“You can’t make those costumes in a factory. In a factory you can make films with robots, futuristic or fantasy, ” Trappetti said. “But these things have to be made by hand.”

While the sci-fi series details the technical aspects of space travel, it also tells the emotional stories of what each astronaut had to leave behind to go where no person has gone before. The cast opened up to the public about what makes this show different from other space movies and television series.
More space movies or shows deal with just space. They deal with the actual space exploration or what happens on the journey. But this is a great love story between all the astronauts and their loved ones on Earth. It has a very interesting combination of a workplace drama and a family drama. And in this show they put so much effort into making the space part a real experience. The way astronauts float, the special effects, and the going out of the spaceship into space looks amazing.
As the astronauts went on the journey, life-threating challenges along the way, the series reveals what each character had to give up to run after their dreams and make history. The cast revealed how they related to that message of devotion.
The actors also opened up about the "bootcamp" they went through to prepare to describe people traveling through space. "It was a lot of hard, physical training. And in the end, I think it all paid off. Of course, we had an amazing stunt(特技)team who guided us through this process and two weeks later we were able to do all sorts of tricks," said Wu, who plays Lu.

Laughter for 15 minutes during a film makes your blood vessels (血管) wider. Besides, when you watch a sad movie, you’re more likely to come away from it thinking about loved ones and feeling happy about what you have.
Watching movies can make you creative. A study shows that young children, who watched the use of magic in Harry Potter, score significantly higher in a creative thinking test than children who watched something else. Moreover, movies are very useful for strengthening people’s mental health. They enable people to take time to really relax and temporarily forget about their daily concerns and problems.
However, watching movies aren’t always beneficial. Studies have shown that some people get real pleasure out of being scared by horror movies, but in various ways they may be risking their physical and mental health without even knowing it. When you watch a tense scene in a movie, your heart rate and blood pressure increase. Meanwhile this change in your brain chemistry reminds you of times when you were in a similar state, even if you have no idea you even had those memories. So if something horrible happens to you, being scared again by a movie can unintentionally make you experience it once more.
Scientists, politicians and parents have debated for decades if being exposed to movie violence leads to actual real-life violence. Overall the answer to that is probably still up in the air, but a new study seems to prove that watching aggression on screen can contribute to being a bully (土霸) in real life, even if it is just in the short term.
In conclusion, certain movies play a positive role, but not all movies do. It depends completely on the subject of the movie. So it’s always advisable to choose the movies concerning something positive.

The Sound of Music
Austria's hills are certainly alive with the sound of music and tourists. Mozart may have been born in Salzburg, but The Sound of Music really put it on the map and now about 70 percent of people visit it because of the movie. Cross Residenzplatz Square and visit the Palace of Leopoldskron where the children in the film fell into the lake.
Troy
Although the Palace of Troy was filmed on sets built at Shepperton Studios in the UK, most of the 2004 movie was shot in Malta and Baja California, Mexico. Malta with historic sites and beautiful blue waters was a good choice to replace Greece. Troy was shot at a host of locations, including Golden Bay, Hal Far as well as Fort Ricasoli(where the city of Troy was constructed). The Trojan horse from the film is now lying on the waterfront in Canakkale, Turkey.
Bridget Joneses Diary
Bridget Jones is brought to life as we watch the work and romance in London. Her special corner flat is above the Globe Tavern by Borough Market, one of the city's oldest and biggest food markets. According to The Telegraph, it would be highly unlikely that she could afford to buy a place like that today since it has risen in value by more than 240 percent.
Harry Potter
J. K. Rowling started writing the Harry Potter books while she was living in Edinburgh, Scotland, so it's no surprise that she set most of the story there. The Hogwarts Express travels through the Scottish Highlands and along the 31 meters high Glenfinnan Viaduct. The second highest waterfall in the UK, Steall Falls can be seen during Quidditch matches.

School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes.
Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.
As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.
Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express the individuality . They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and math; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

For centuries, the Guna, a native group living in Panama and parts of neighboring Colombia, have been creating the colorful clothing. A mola, which translates to “shirt” in the Guna language, is a piece of traditional dress typically worn by women and known for its bright colors and complicated designs.
While there’s no exact record of when the first mola was made, many historians believe that the colorful custom came from a different form of art that was common within the Guna community: body painting. “At one time, the Guna people used body painting to keep away bad spirits,” says Yanelis Ledezma, a tour guide at the Museo de la Mola (MUMO) in Panama City. “Ladies would draw symbols and signs on the bodies of their family members. Eventually, these same patterns were applied to molas.”
Ledezma estimates that creating a mola can take anywhere from 60 to 80 hours of labor to sew (缝). To create each dress, women and girls use a technique called reverse appliqué, which involves mixing two or more fabrics (织物) of different colors and sewing them together. The more fabrics used, the more complex the final piece. Often, the base fabric of a piece is black to help emphasize the other colors and make them stand out on the finished dress.
The art of creating a mola is something that’s handed down from one generation of Guna women to the next. “It takes a lot of time to make a mola,” Ledezma says. “Ladies will visualize the finished mola in their mind and create everything by hand without using any sort of patterns. They visually know where to put each piece of fabric, and the result is a beautiful piece of art. To this day, the mola is more than a piece of clothing; it’s an important part of being part of the Guna community.”

And talk about weird: Samsung and Apple became official frenemies by including an app for iTunes on Samsung’s newest TVs.
Walking the show floor this year, I picked these products — some practical, some downright strange—that captured the spirit of where things are headed … or at least the creativity that makes CES (消费电子展) so much fun.
This is 2019’s must-have television for billionaires and wannabe James Bonds. With the tap of a button, LG’s 65-inch TV dramatically rises from a long box where it is rolled up inside. How did they do that? The screen uses plastic and OLED tech, which in addition to having fantastic image quality is also capable of bending. (Coming this year, we’ll also be getting smartphones with foldable OLED screens.) The idea is you can place your TV in front of a window without having it block the view all the time. But with a TV like this, who wants to be inconspicuous? Go ahead and show off: LG says it can withstand being rolled up for at least 50, 000 cycles.
Samsung TVs will now support an app for Apple’s iTunes movies and TV shows. That means you can buy video from Apple without plugging in Apple’s own streaming box, the Apple TV. And new sets from a variety of makers including Samsung and LG will also support AirPlay 2, Apple’s tech for beaming music, pictures and video from iPhones and Macs to the big screen. Why is Apple suddenly playing nice with other hardware brands? It’s part of a bigger push by the tech giant into making money through services, including subscriptions for music and (perhaps soon) streaming video.
1. According to the passage, what’s the author’s identity?A.Samsung TVs’ salesperson. | B.LG’s salesperson. |
C.A field staff of CES. | D.An journalist covering CES. |
A.modest | B.luxurious | C.timid | D.exaggerated |
A.It has been gearing up to start pushing upgrades to 8K sets. |
B.It is still very pricey for its high-tech and fascinating quality. |
C.Its screen uses plastic and OLED tech so that it can bend. |
D.It is portable and supports AirPlay 2 now. |
A.Neutral. | B.Pessimistic. | C.Compromising. | D.Positive. |

What the keepers did not know was that a 30-foot wall of water was headed straight toward them. This tsunami(海啸) had been caused by an earthquake more than 1, 000 miles away in the Indian Ocean. When the huge wave hit the coast, it caused severe damage. Many people died. The elephants, however, were not swept away by the water. They stood safely on the hill.
Scientists have long suspected that animals sense natural disasters before humans do. People have told stories of dogs refusing to go outside and sharks swimming to deeper waters before a hurricane. After the 2004 tsunami, people said they saw tigers, monkeys, and water buffalo escaping to higher ground before the waters rushed in. Even in the hardest-hit areas of southern Asia, there were few animal deaths.
It's unlikely that an animal’s so-called sixth sense comes from some magical power to see into the future. Experts believe that animals may be more sensitive than humans to changes in temperature and other environmental conditions that take place before a natural disaster. The elephants in Sri Lanka, for example, may have picked up vibrations from within the Earth, a sign that earthquake was coming. Because vibrations in the ground travel much faster than an ocean wave, the elephants may have felt the earthquake that caused the tsunami well before the tsunami itself came to the coast.
A few scientists are calling for a system to track reports of strange behavior in people’s pets, hoping that these reports can serve as a warning system that a natural disaster is about to happen. But Marina Haynes, an animal behavior scientist at the Philadelphia Zoo, says, “It would be an unreliable way to predict disasters. It can be difficult to know what an animal is doing. Is the animal nervous because an earthquake is about to happen or is it frightened because there is an enemy nearby?”
1. What happened to the elephants in Yala National Park on December 26, 2004?A.They died in the natural disaster. |
