Google’s auto-complete function takes that burden off our shoulders by telling us what we should be searching for and what we should be thinking. We then sort through selected results to find the answer to life, the universe, and everything. This process gives us the false impression of thinking—when, in reality, we’ve lost touch with one of the most basic of human experiences.
Thinking for yourself isn’t just about reducing external inputs. It’s about making thought an intentional practice and thinking about an issue before researching it. It’s about forgetting the habit of immediately looking to others for answers and instead becoming curious about our own thoughts.
Deep thinking requires time. It’s only by concentrating on the problem or question long enough that you’ll dive deeper and locate better insights. Most of us resist setting aside time for deep thinking because it doesn’t produce immediate obvious results. But ideas, as the filmmaker David Lynch puts it, are like fish: “If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper.”
After you’ve gone deeper on a question by thinking about it yourself, turn to reading what others have written about it. But don’t pause your own thinking. The goal of reading isn’t just to understand. It’s to treat what you read as a tool-a key to unlocking what’s inside of you. Some of the best ideas that come up when I’m reading a book aren’t from the book. An idea I read will often knock out a related thought in me that was previously hidden. The text will act as a mirror, helping me see myself and my thoughts more clearly.
Breakthroughs lie—not in absorbing all the wisdom outside of you-but in uncovering the wisdom within you.

C.It requires basic skills. | D.It is widely accepted. |
A.To find out ideas from books. | B.To fully absorb others’ wisdom. |

On the top of my list is The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. It is basically the book version of the world-famous film of the same title, and it’s a wonderful companion to life.
What could be more motivating than a book that teaches you how to achieve everything that you’ve ever wanted to achieve — whatever that may be — using the law of attraction? This is a book that says nothing is impossible and more importantly, makes you believe it.
The Second Best Motivational Book: The Alchemist
The most inspirational books aren’t always self-help in nature. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is a must on every person’s shelf.
The story is of a young shepherd boy named Santiago who goes on an exciting adventure to reach his dreams. The book is full of philosophies and talks about the importance of understanding your personal legend.
The Third Best Motivational Book: The Happiness Project
Written by Gretchen Rubin, this is possibly one of the easiest and fun reads in the list. While it is indeed one of the most inspiring books I’ve come across recently, it is never preachy (说教的) as some books often become. Reading Rubin’s work is like reading the adventures of a good friend—funny, down-to-earth and inspiring.
The Fourth Best Motivational Book: Your Best Life Now
Joel Osteen’s book is a wonderful source of good advice and motivational tips. His book is simple and would be a wonderful companion to just about anybody.

Growing up in Arizona’s rodeo (竞技) country, I was familiar with the events that come with traveling rodeos: bull riding, dressing and mutton busting. Mutton busting is like bull riding, but instead of bulls, they use sheep. And in place of the men, it’s children between six and ten years old who try to hang on for eight seconds.
It took me all of five minutes to say yes to the idea of riding a sheep. Being seven years old, my decision- making ability was pretty limited. I figured I could ride a sheep as well as the next kid. Little did I know that I was in for a world of pain and embarrassment.
My nerves were shaking the day of the rodeo. I hated being in front of crowds. I didn’t like getting dirty; I didn’t even like sheep, which I thought of as just dirty and smelly. Yet there I was, getting ready to ride one for eight seconds in front of hundreds of people. I wanted to run out of the field and hide in the hot car until it was over. But by the time this idea occurred to me, it was too late. I was lifted away from my mother by a rodeo trainer and placed onto a platform.
My feet went into the narrow pen (羊圈) first. I felt my shoes touch the dirty floor of the pen. Once I was balanced on the top of the sheep, the trainer let go and told me to lean forward. I did as he said. I could feel the animal’s heart beating faster than mine. I realized that the poor sheep was even more frightened than I was.
Then the gate opened, and I quickly discovered that my hold was too weak. Within three seconds I had fallen off the sheep, and found myself face-down on the sun-baked earth. The sheep thought this was its time to take revenge (复仇), and attacked me from behind. There I lay, hat down, covered in dirt, with tears streaming down my face. I looked behind me to see my mother running to comfort me. “Stand up and show them you’re okay,” she told me as she wiped the dirty tears from my face. I stood up, dirty and upset, waved my little hand, and walked out with my mother.
Sadly, I didn’t win anything, not even the respect of these rodeo animals. I did find a new admiration for those little balls of wool, though.

Although the Games have been canceled three times in all, in 1916, 1940 and 1944 — due to the two world wars in the modern Olympics’history of more than 120 years, never before have any Games been postponed to a different year.
Nevertheless, the decision is the right one. If it is not brought under control, the harm done to human society by the pandemic could be more serious and far-reaching than even the two world wars. Given the number of countries affected and social and economic shock waves that have been caused by the rapid spread of the virus, postponing the Games is the only right and sensible choice to make.
After all, nothing is more important than people’s lives. Postponing the Games not only safeguards the health of athletes, audiences and everyone involved in the Games, but also reduces potential transmission of the virus from one place to another. Even looking at it from only a sporting level, the pandemic has already caused huge disruptions (扰乱) to athletes’ training and the qualification process.
It is undoubtedly a big blow for Japan, which has prepared meticulously for the largest sports event in the world, including renovating and upgrading its infrastructure and sports venues, such as rebuilding Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium at cost of$1.45 billion. Japan will suffer huge loss at least in the short term.
The international community owes a big “thank you” to Japan for all it has done for the Games despite the postponement. That’s why the Games will still be called the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021. The Olympic flame will also remain stored and displayed in Japan.
More importantly, all members in the Olympic family, guided by the Olympic spirit of respect and understanding are morally bound to stand behind Japan to go through this most difficult moment in the Games’ history.

Lucille Ball
On the day that three-year-old Lucille Ball’s father died, a bird flew into her home and became trapped. Traumatized(受精神创伤)by the events, she developed a lifelong feeling of intense dislike of birds. The actor (1911 - 1989) even refused to stay in hotels that had pictures of birds on the walls.
Charles Dickens
Author Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) carried a navigational compass with him at all times and always faced north when he slept. He believed it improved his creativity and writing.
Gustav Mahler
Composer Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) thought he could cheat death by not naming his ninth symphony by number. This was because several composers, including Beethoven and Schubert, had died after completing their ninth symphonies. So Mahler called his ninth The Song of the Earth—and it worked, in a sense. He lived long enough to write most of his tenth symphony, though he died before it was performed.
