Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some incidents. Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.
On a sunny morning this April, my aunt Kate invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration on her farm. Since my family hadn't done anything different for ages, the whole family was very excited and everyone tried their best to make sure everything went well as planned. In order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Alice and my little brother Bill even joined me in making an extra-special treat-cupcakes. Full of joy and expectation, we were ready to set off.
The picnic was supposed to last from twelve to three. There was not enough time left. After checking the car again and again, my parents loaded books, a picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of foods and drinks into the car. The moment of our departure finally came at 11 o'clock.
However, everything went wrong the instant we bravely drove off. First, we had to stop and wait for Bill to find his shoes. Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom left her wallet behind. Then, about halfway to Aunt Kate's house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Alice to use a bathroom.
After that, my parents decided it'd be quicker to take one little side country road as a shortcut (捷径). But the shortcut ended up turning into a long way! We drove forever on a winding road with wildflower fields spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green pine trees going on and on within our sight. I had no mood to appreciate all of those. Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was seized by a growing sense of desperation, for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our destination.

The telephone rang. Jack answered the call from his mother, “Mr. Richard died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻影片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son.
“Jack, did you hear me?”
“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him.” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisced (追忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,” Mom told him.
After Jack’s father died, Mr. Richard stepped in to make sure Jack had a man’s influence in his life and it was Mr. Richard who taught Jack many things. Jack wouldn’t have been in this business if it hadn’t been for Mr. Richard.
Busy as he was, he returned home and attended the funeral, which was small and uneventful. Mr. Richard had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before Jack had to return home, he and his mother stopped by to see the old house next door one more time. Standing in the middle of the room, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack?” Mom asked.
“Where is the watch, the thing he valued most?” he seemed to ask himself.

Love Will Melt Your Heart
The day before my daughter Norah’s fourth birthday, something she said forecast remarkable event.I’d just picked her up from preschool when she cautioned me to mind the elderly person walking across the parking lot at a glacier’s pace. She went on to explain that she has a soft spot for mature folks: “I like old people the best because they walk slowly like I do and they have soft skin like me. They’re all going to die soon, so I’ll love them before they die.” I was struck by her thoughtfulness and empathy.
The following day — her birthday — again on the way home from school, she asked if we could stop at the grocery store to buy cupcakes. How do you say no to a birthday girl? So we headed toward the bakery and picked up the cupcakes. As I was distracted by a clearance shelf, Norah was busy standing up in the cart, excitedly waving and joyfully proclaiming, “Hi, old person! It’s my birthday today!”
Before I could hush her, he stopped and turned to her. His expression softened as he replied, “Well, hello, little lady! Happy birthday!” They chatted for a few minutes. Then, Norah turned to me and asked, “Can I take a picture with him?” I told her we’d certainly ask. I approached him and asked if he’d take a photo with my daughter for her birthday. His expression changed from confused to stunned to delighted, “A photo? With me?” he asked. “Yes, sure, for my birthday!” Norah answered. And so he did, I pulled out my iPhone, and they posed together. She placed her soft hand on top of his. He wordlessly stared at her with twinkling eyes as she kept his hand in hers, kissed the top of his hand and then placed it on her cheek. They were chatting like long-lost friends. I asked his name, and he told us to call him Dan. We were blocking other shoppers, but they didn’t care. There was magic happening in the grocery store that day, and we could all feel it.

The boiling hot sun beamed onto us as we walked out for the state-cup finals. The mix of excitement and nervousness created tension in the air as everyone walked out onto the football field. I could feel my heart pounding everywhere in my body as both teams lined up.
Starting midfield, like always. 90-minute game, like always. But this was the most extraordinary stage we’ve ever played on. All parents of us were invited to watch the match. As we got ready for kickoff, fear took over my body. Coach says confidence is the biggest part of the game, but for me, it’s my biggest enemy.
My thoughts were interrupted as the high-pitched whistle stabbed my ears, and the game began. The ball came straight to me. I drove forward, slipped around a defender (后卫), and lost it. On the very next play, I gave it straight away again. I could feel my confidence just seeping away. I told myself I wouldn’t lose it again.
“Come on, Aidan, keep the ball!” shouted Griffin, my teammate. It wasn’t mean or anything. We’ve known each other for years and played together for a long time. But it was not helping. I just played it safe next time and passed it back. Barely even on target, I was losing it. I could feel our coach, Caden’s eyes burning into the back of my head.
“Aidan, stay out wide on the start and get up that field. You’ve done it before, it’s coming to you on this kickoff. Use your speed.” once again shouted Griffin. But I didn’t feel fast enough. I felt like there were rocks tied to my ankles when I ran.
The whistle blew twice for halftime. The score was still 0-0. It was a bad game on our part, sun peeked through my hair into my eyes. My mouth was as dry as a desert.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________When I was nine years old, we lived on a dead-end street in the countryside.
Of all the rules my mom made for me, the one that I must obey was never ever go near the empty house at the end of the street. This was a house the kids had renamed “old lady Coffet’s house”. I don’t know if that was even the lady’s real name.
Usually I spent most of my time with my best friends Jayne and Mindy. “Hey, let’s go to ‘old lady Coffet’s house’! We can walk around to see if any windows are broken and maybe slide in!” said Mindy one day. I answered first without hesitation, “No, I’m not allowed to go there. If I disobey the rule, my mom won’t take me to see the new Beatles movie on Saturday.” “Come on, she won’t even know! What about you, Jayne?” said Mindy. Jayne, always up for an adventure, responded with, “Sure! Count me in!” So that was it. I was disobeying my mom’s most serious rule.
We got on our bikes and within ten minutes we arrived. We stared at the broken steps without a railing leading up to a weather worn front door and a broken storm door hanging off on one side, with dead plants surrounding the steps. I knew that we all had the same feeling. Nervousness. I said, “I don’t think this is a good idea.” Mindy yelled, “Agreed!” as she was already turning her bike around.
“Wait,” I whispered. “I heard something.” Laying my bike down, I walked slowly following the sound over to the front of the garage. Surprisingly, there in the deep overgrown grass were two baby dogs. Seeing me reach my hands out, they both came over, licked my fingers and rolled on their backs. I called my friends to come over and said, “We have to bring these two guys home and show our parents. Otherwise, they will starve or get hurt by other animals.” “Maybe bears!” said Mindy.

Charlie was very obedient to his parents and teachers, for which everyone loved him a lot. Due to his father’s job, his family moved to a new city, where he entered a new school. As Charlie was a good boy, soon most of his new classmates became his good friends. The teachers also praised this new boy, because of his intelligence and nice behavior to all.
But there was one boy in the class who did not like Charlie at all! His name was Bill and he was a very naughty boy, for which no one liked him at all. He found that Charlie was a quiet boy. So he started creating troubles for his new classmate. At the lunchtime, when Charlie was having lunch, Bill came up to him and asked, “Hey, what do you have for lunch?” “It’s cake and sweets,” Charlie replied with a smile.
“I love sweets and so I will eat this food today.” Bill said grudgingly. He snatched the lunch box from Charlie. The other boys sitting around were furious, but no one dared to protest due to fears of being bullied by Bill and his little gang.
From that day on, Bill regularly ate Charlie’s lunch and even threw away the water from his water bottle one day. But Charlie still kept quiet and did not complain to the teacher. Bill never did his homework and always forced the good boys of the class, including Charlie, to write it down on his copy for him! When Charlie’s parents learned about all these bullies of Bill, they wanted to come to the school and complain about this naughty boy. But Charlie stopped them and said, “Mom, Dad, please do not worry. Everything will be all right. After all, Bill is also a kid like me.”
The days went by and the time came for the annual sports at the school. Charlie was also good at sports and he participated in a number of events. Bill also participated in sack race (套袋赛跑), though he could not run very fast due to his fat body.
