The Singapore Management University (SMU) MBA programme was launched with the aim to develop the next generation of business leaders in Asia. We seek candidates with certain conditions and qualities.
Achievements and demonstrated (显示) leadership potential. Participants in current and past classes have an average of 5 -6 years of working experience. We are looking for candidates who can benefit from - and contribute to - our seminar style of teaching and who can successfully lead teams and organizations coming out the programme. The programme has a strict minimum work experience requirement of 2 years (more experience preferred). Younger applicants can apply but must demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and maturity through their professional and personal experiences.
As our Full-time MBA and Part-time MBA are accelerated and strict, we are looking for candidates with strong academic certificates, as evidenced by their past academic performance. The GMAT is required as it gives us a base to compare candidates from diverse national, educational and professional backgrounds. While we have no minimum GMAT score, we consider candidates who have stronger than average marks in the verbal (语文) quantitative (数学) and writing sections to be more competitive. We also require TOEFL or IELTS scores from those whose undergraduate or graduate degrees were not taught in English.
Our business school’s aim is to train sharp minds who lead organizations and serve society. To this end, we look to build a dynamic and diverse student body who will actively contribute to the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom, and who desire to make a difference in their greater communities. We are also looking for candidates with strong interpersonal skills and an international outlook who can work in diverse groups, a necessary condition for being a leader in today’s globalized world.

“The new Chinese textbooks have a selection (精选) of 67 classic works of ancient poetry and prose that account for 49.3 percent of all articles,” said Wen Rumei, editor-in-chief of the new Chinese textbooks, at a press conference held by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Tuesday.
Besides content on politics, the economy, society and the rule of law, the Chinese and politics textbooks also attach importance to traditional Chinese culture.

The new textbooks will be used by students in the first year of senior high schools in six provincial-level regions from the autumn semester and will cover students of all grades nationwide by 2022.
New textbooks on Chinese, history and morality and rule of law replaced old textbooks for the first graders in both primary schools and junior high schools nationwide in 2017 and will cover higher grades starting in the autumn semester, according to the press conference.
“A survey showed that close to 90 percent of students liked the new textbooks, and teachers reported an average satisfaction rate of 92 percent for the textbooks,” said Liu Hongjie, deputy head with the textbook agency under the MOE.

There has been a lot of research and investment (投资) in hydroponic (水栽的) greenhouses, which allow farmers to grow tomatoes without soil, in recent years as consumers have needed more and better fresh vegetables year-round. “There’s a lot of techniques you can use to grow tomatoes off-season,” says Neil Mattson, co-director of Cornell University’s Controlled Environment Agriculture program. In the past five years, greenhouse tomato production has doubled.
That doesn’t mean all the tomatoes currently being grown in greenhouses are very flavorful. Flavor sometimes gets sacrificed for high yields (产量), just as it does in the production of commercial field-grown tomatoes. “The greenhouse is such an expensive structure that we’re paying a lot to heat and light,” Mattson says. Therefore, farmers often need to grow a lot of tomatoes to make up for it. “And just like the field-grown varieties, much greenhouse-grown fruit is harvested before its peak (顶峰) and travels long distances before it ends up in a supermarket,” he says.
But that’s all changing with the new hydroponic system. Researchers are now trying their best to save some ripening (成熟的) time by growing produce locally. Gotham Greens, based in New York City, grows hydroponic tomatoes year-round and sells them to local restaurants and supermarkets. And Backyard Farms, based in Maine, supplies its hydroponically grown crop to nearby markets in the Northeast.
“It’s becoming increasingly important now that global warming is making outdoor farming less predictable (可预料的) , but greenhouse growers don’t have to worry about a heavy rain or a cold day destroying their fruit,” says Gene Giacomelli, who directs the Controlled Environment Agriculture Center at the University of Arizona. The advantages of a greenhouse are that growers can control the amount of heat and light their crops get. Many are equipped with man-made lights that growers can turn on when sunlight is not enough. And the hydroponic system allows them to control pretty much everything else.
“That’s not to say we’ll value the summer harvest any less. In the end, I still love growing my own tomatoes in my backyard in the summer,” Mattson says. “It’s psychological (心理的) ,but I think they taste best.”

According to the latest survey, making a difference through their work is essential (必要的) to young people’s happiness.
The survey found that 72 percent of graduating college seniors believe being able to have a positive social influence through their work is essential to their happiness. Making a difference is so important to them that 45 percent say they would take a 15-percent pay cut to work at an organization that has a social or environmental influence, and 58 percent say they would take a pay cut to work for an organization whose values are the same as their own.
Besides this, the survey found that female students are far more likely to put social influence in first place than their male classmates, echoing the results of a former study showing that female maths and science majors are more likely to say they go into those fields to make a difference.
One reason for the emphasis (强调) on improving the world probably has to do with the culture of colleges, which encourages students to connect their studies back to real-world problems. Students are used to discussing important social issues (问题) with their friends and professors, and doing something about them in class or through volunteer activities. Once students develop those habits, they don’t shut them off when graduation rolls around.

But do you know that a spider's natural color may inspire a new shade of blue textiles and offer a solution to the glare on the screen of your phone when you're out in the sun?
This color is a shade of blue, inspired by the cobalt blue tarantula (钴蓝狼蛛) — a species of spider that is native to the rainforests of southeast Asia. What surprised scientists who observed the eight-legged furry spider was that its color did not change at all even when viewed from different angles.
A team of scientists, led by Bill Hsiung from the University of Akron in Ohio, have been studying tarantulas for some time. Blue is a rare color in the animal kingdom, so the researchers set out to find the exact nature of this blue. They found that the outer body of the tarantula is covered with tiny crystalline (晶体的) structures. These tiny structures act like a mirror and when light strikes them, they reflect only one particular wavelength of light - blue. This kind of natural color is referred to as the “structural color”.
Usually, when colors are viewed from different angles, they appear different because of how light is reflected. This is because of a phenomenon known as iridescence (彩虹色). However, the blue color produced by tarantulas appears the same from all angles. Scientists find that it is the tiny crystal structures on the tarantula’s body arranged in a flower-like shape that reduce iridescence.
Scientists have known about structural colors for a while, but they have not seen them used for dye. With a clearer understanding of how “structural colors” work, scientists can now create a pigment (色素) similar to the tarantula blue to dye textiles and other products. Watch out for the tarantula blue-a color that may soon take the fashion industry by storm!
