How to Make a Budget(预算)
Most likely, you aren’t the family breadwinner. But doing a small job or getting a weekly allowance would put some money in your pocket. For kids and grown-ups alike money is easy to spend. If you aren’t careful, it can be gone in no time.
Being responsible with your money is an important skill to learn and the sooner you start the better. Whether you are tracking your spending or saving for something special, creating a budget can help you deal with expenses and plan for the future. All you need are paper and a pencil and some self-control.
First, take a look at our sample monthly budget. Then, use a separate sheet of paper to plan your own. In the first two columns, list your sources of income and how much you expect to earn from them. In the third and fourth columns, list what you expect to spend your money on and the amount.
Sample Monthly Budget
Monthly income
Amount
Monthly Expenses
Amount
Allowance
$ 20.00
Snacks
$ 26.00
Money earned
selling drinks
$ 25.00
Music downloads
$ 12.00
Money earned

$ 12.50
Movies
$ 18.00
Money earned
delivering newspapers
$ 30.00
Video Rentals
$ 10.00
Total:
$ 87.50
Total:
$ 66.00

The left-hand total should be more than or equal to the right-hand total. If it is, you have an effective budget.
Budgets are not complex, but sticking to them can be tough. When planning your budget, be realistic about your expenses. If you know that you drop $18 at a movie, don’t write $12 in that space simply because you wish you were spending less.
If you are eyeing a big purchase, such as a $150 skateboard, spend less and save more until you have the total amount. No matter how attractive it may be, avoid spending your savings. One day, you will thank yourself!

【推荐1】Being able to find high quality health care at an affordable price is an issue in many countries.

In the United States, Walmart, a large chain store, is trying to help. It is offering something new to its employees: cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment to only $4.

The catch is that the patient and doctor must meet electronically -- over the Internet. This online service is called “telemedicine.”

Walmart is the latest major business in the United States to push its workers toward a high-tech way to be examined and treated by doctors. Thanks to telemedicine, people can talk with medical experts from the privacy of their own homes, often using a secure video connection.

Online visits make it easier for patients to see an expert or quickly find help for problems considered non-emergencies. Plus, it can cut down on the time away from work. But many people continue to go to the doctor’s office.

Some areas of healthcare seem like a good choice for telemedicine. Patients who have had medical treatments and cannot move around easily can use telemedicine for their follow-up visits. Also, people seeking help for mental health issues can benefit from the privacy that telemedicine gives.

But generally, Americans have been slow to try virtual(虚拟的) health care. The Associated Press (AP) reports that 80 percent of middle-sized and large U.S. companies offered telemedicine services to their workers in 2018. That is up from only 18 percent in 2014. However, the AP found that only 8 percent of employees used telemedicine at least once in 2017.

Compared with seeing a real doctor personally, some people may think the quality of telemedicine is not as good. Parents, for example, may feel they are not giving their child the best care if they use a virtual doctor appointment. Another reason some adults may not use telemedicine services is trust. Tom Hill, age 66, lives in the state of Indiana. Hill told the AP he has no plans to ever use telemedicine. He does not buy anything online, let alone do something as personal as seeing a doctor. He says, for him, it is important to look his doctor in the eye and shake hands.

1. What can we infer from paragraph 1 and 2?
A.Few can afford high quality health care.
B.Telemedicine is sure to be well-received.
C.Why Walmart is such a great success.
D.Quality health care is normally costly.
2. Who is most likely to try telemedicine?
A.A busy employee.B.A worried mother.
C.A retired worker.D.A private physician.
3. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.High Quality Health Care at a Low Price
B.People Unsure about Virtual Doctor Visits
C.Telemedicine, a New Trend of Appointment
D.Visits to Doctors in Walmart in America

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了地中海饮食的特点、健康效益以及其与心脏疾病和体重管理的关系。

【推荐2】The Mediterranean (地中海的) diet is the No. 1 Best Diet Overall. It’s also a top-rated diet for those looking for a heart-healthy and weight-friendly diet.

Don’t confuse Americanized Mediterranean menus -which often feature too much refined pasta, beef and cheese-with healthy eating. The food and eating habits of the Mediterranean region are undoubtedly both delicious and healthful. However, the “Americanized” version of Mediterranean food, deep-fried cheese and falafel, heavy pasta dishes and a lot of beef and pork is anything but healthy.

Though people living in the diverse Mediterranean region eat different types of food, their diet mainly consists of plant-based foods -whole grains, beans, nuts and unsaturated (不饱和的) fat from olive oil. A small amount of lean poultry (家禽肉) and plenty of seafood is also allowed.

The nutritional value and health benefits of the Mediterranean diet were first documented in the Seven Countries Study, which investigated the relationship between diet and heart diseases among roughly 13,000 men from 1958 to 1999. The study indicated that the type of fat affects cardiovascular (心血管的) health more than total fat intake does. Although standard nutrition advice calls for a 30% limit on total calories from fat, even up to 40% may be heart-friendly, if most of the fats consumed are unsaturated.

Since the Mediterranean diet focuses on nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and health y fats, it spares little room for the saturated fat, extra sugars and sodium. As a result, people who eat a Mediterranean-style diet have longer life spans, report a higher life quality and suffer from less chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Also, Mediterranean diet offers an upper hand in weight loss as a further research suggested.

1. Which food is typically included in the Mediterranean diet?
A.Deep-fried cheese.B.Heavy pasta dishes.
C.Refined beef.D.Seafood.
2. What can we learn about fat intake according to the Seven Countries Study?
A.Total fat intake matters more.B.Type of fat is more significant.
C.We should take in no more than 30% fat.D.Taking in up to 40% fat is unhealthy.
3. What will the author probably talk about in the following paragraph?
A.The methods researchers conducted the study.
B.Additional benefits of Mediterranean-style diet.
C.Suggestions on weight losing with Mediterranean diet.
D.How the Mediterranean diet promotes weight loss.
4. Where does the passage most possibly come from?
A.A scientific report.B.A local newspaper.
C.A food fair guidebook.D.A food magazine.
