However, instead of being with friends and family, she’s in the company of strangers. Jenny has outlived everybody she has ever loved and it is to her young carer, Candice, that she turns when going through her memory box. As Jenny gently touches the smooth stone, picked up off a faraway beach a lifetime ago, she realizes there is one last journey she must make. She knows it will be painful but if she can talk Candice into accompanying her, she will get through it.
As a writer, I try to keep to a writing routine (常规;惯例) similar to the common working week and am always at my desk by ten at the latest. I know this is not everybody’s idea of an early start. Then, I will go through the various writing work, followed by reading and editing what I wrote the day before. I set myself a target (目标) of 1,000 words a day and, while some days I may achieve many more than this, on other days it’s a right old slog and I can hardly pass the 200 mark.
Many moons ago, I attended a wing group. There, I got the best piece of writing advice from my teacher. She told us to employ the BOSHOK method, which stands for Bum On Seat, Hands On Keyboard. Or in my case, often, Bum On Set, Head On Knees. It basally means, just get on with it. She would always say, “The best advice I can offer to those who want to be writers is a quote from Elmore Leonard, ‘Try not to write the parts people tend to skip (跳过).’ Say it all really.”

Todd Dorsey is one of them. He spent $100,000 on it and prepared for a year before going to Alaska. He brought his family and friends to help him out. He must get them mining (开矿) and a place to stay. He also had to keep their spirits up and kept everyone working as a team. They had to run off bears sometimes from their camp.
They had to face the fact that their lead mechanic’s (机修工的) health was not good. They called him Harness, and he was on medication that was hard for him to take, because out in Alaska it was not easy to get to the hospital and so he didn’t enjoy good health. He was the only one who could keep things running the way they were supposed to. There was one guy that didn’t seem to get along with anyone. But didn’t there always have to be someone that didn’t get along and messed things up?
They got excited when they found a few small pieces of gold, but they needed a lot more to cover the cost of mining every day. It cost Todd $1,000 a day to run everything they needed to mine. They had to make money before the Alaska summer came to an end or they would go broke(破产).

The Affinia Hotel Collection is improving service in its five hotels in New York City and one each in Chicago and Washington D.C. Everyone from housekeeping to management will communicate with guests based on body language.
A body language expert trained employees on what cues(信号)to look for. A guest who makes eye contact while walking down the hall, for example, may be open to conversation. A businessman frequently touching an ear is probably nervous and may be interested in a therapeutic pillow(理疗枕头).
“So many companies, when they talk about service, they program it to how many rings till you answer the phone,” says John Moser, marketing officer for Affinia. That doesn’t sound very reasonable. Let’s give employees some tools they can use to find out what’s the right way to talk with somebody at a particular time.”
Patti Wood, a body language expert who carried out the Affinia training, says she has never seen such training given to all hotel employees. “All of the training is to make sure every single guest is treated as special,” she says.
Staff questions about a guest’s day won’t disappear, Moser says. But, he says, small talk isn’t always enough to get a reading of a guest’s needs. “You can’t always tell from the first sentence whether someone is happy or unhappy," he says. “Measuring some of the things they’re showing with the way they’re talking to you, can help our employees provide a service that’s more personal for them.”
1. What are Affinia hotels doing?A.Understanding their employees better. |

King’s Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint — free of charge.
The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.
The Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dianaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts (热爱者). Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.
Byron’s Pool
Many stories surround Lard Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on one occasion Byron swam by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields.
