Having just quit a highly moneymaking job with tech giant Microsoft in the United States, where he’d made millions working as a program manager, Patrick Awuah would wake up once in a while wondering if he’d done the right thing.
What Awuah wanted was to create a university in his native Ghana.a state-of-the-art education centre that would help educate the country’s next generation of leaders.Awuah moved with his family, back to Ghana. There,he invested his own money and with the help of other donors he founded Ashesi University.

Located about an hour's drive from the capital Accra,Ashesi, which appropriately translates to “beginning,” is the first Ghanaian university to combine technical majors with a liberal arts approach. Its campus, set on 100 acres in a town called Berekuso, was designed to be inspiring for the more than 500 young Ghanaians studying there.
“So when I look at universities I see Africa fast—forward 30 years. When this 20-year-old is now in his or her 50s,that person is going to be a leader.”
Today Ashesi, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, offers degrees in business,
information systems and computer science. There are plans to offer engineering and economics majors in the near future. The school’s graduation rate is between 70%and 90%,according to Awuah.
In our last freshman class,50% of the students paid full tuition(学费),25%were on full
scholarships and 25%on partial scholarships ,”he said.“The reason why variety is so important is that the most important conversation on campus is a conversation about the good society—what is the good society we would like to see in Africa? 【推荐1】At five, I started getting ear infections. When I got a third infection, my parents couldn’t afford the treatment. I went deaf in my fight ear and was left with 20 percent hearing in my left at last. My doctors predicted that I would be thoroughly deaf but I’m not.

There was always music on in my house in my childhood. My dad was a DJ, so he played different kinds of music home and abroad. For my 18th birthday, my dad asked me to deejay at the restaurant he owned. After doing that for a few weeks, I desired to learn more. I e-mailed DJ Shiftee, a distinguished New York City DJ: “ I know you like a challenge. How about teaching a deaf person to deejay?” He wrote back, “Challenge accepted.” He tutored me, helping me develop correct technique. I practiced four hours a day.

Now when I’m performing, muscle memory takes over. When I started, I wouldn’t tell the club managers that I was deaf. I would just shop up, introduce myself, and start playing music. They were always so astonished to hear I was a deaf DJ. Sometimes I would bring doctor’s notes to prove it. It was a comfort that they were giving me opportunities to perform because I was brilliant, not out of sympathy. Eventually people started calling me “ that deaf DJ”, and the name stuck.

What fascinates me most about deejaying is the creativity. I use software that turns the music into lines of color on a computer screen. I’m visually hearing the music. That is, cover your ears, and you’re able to hear the music in a different way. Music is not all about hearing. I play all sorts of get- togethers now. I also go to elementary schools for the deaf and talk to the students about motivation and believing in themselves. I’m big on talking to the parents. I tell them, “ My advice to you is let your kids chase their dreams. I’m a deaf DJ, so why not?”

B.He didn’t receive correct treatment.

A.He is not totally deaf.B.He was once tutored by a noted DJ.
C.He creates a new access to music.D.He has muscle memory while performing.
3. Why does the author talk to students and parents?
A.He is a sociable person.B.He likes talking to people.
C.He wants to share his ideas about life.D.He is expecting more audiences in his performance.
4. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A.To Fight Poverty.B.To Perform Music.
C.To Become a Deaf DJ.D.To Challenge Weakness.

名校
文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者和丈夫Wes以及他们的两只狗已经在一辆野营车里住了好几年了——把它叫做家,开着它周游美国的经历。

【推荐3】My husband Wes and I and our two dogs have spent several years living in an RV (野营车) — calling it home and driving it all around the United States.

Wes and I had just sold our house outside of St. Louis, Missouri and moved to a town in Colorado. Though we enjoyed our new state, we were traveling back home for visits often. So at first the RV was intended for traveling in comfort: We could save money on hotels, travel at a more relaxed pace, avoid packing (打包行李) and unpacking, and be able to take our dogs with us. Plus, my husband had always wanted one.

We bought the first RV in July 2015 and by September of that year we were already considering living in it full time. Wes and I love traveling and being “location independent,” and our jobs allow us to work from anywhere. At first it did seem strange to live on the road, but once we officially made the decision, in February 2016, we never looked back.

I absolutely love living in an RV, so my list of “advantages” is long. I love being able to park my home right next to the best biking trails (小路), change the view from the windows, follow the good weather, and explore unusual destinations (目的地).

The biggest “disadvantage” is the planning that’s necessary. You do have to plan ahead where you are going to park because sometimes places are full. As a full-time traveler, you are often planning, moving, and trying new things. So once you arrive somewhere, it’s nice to stay a while and just sit still. That’s why I suggest that RVers park their RV every once in a while, or move a little slower.

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the author and her husband?
A.Why they bought their first RV.
B.Where they traveled in their RV.
C.How they went on holiday in an RV.
D.How they gave up their house to get an RV.
2. What did the author and her husband do in February 2016?
A.They moved to a new city and found new jobs.
B.They began living in their RV full time.
C.They rebuilt their house in Colorado.
D.They sold their first RV.
3. What does the author think of her lifestyle?
A.It is busy and challenging.
B.It still needs some changes.
C.It is comfortable and satisfying.
D.It has made her more independent.
4. What does the author suggest RVers do?
A.Try new types of RVs.
B.Head for thinly populated places.
C.Slow down and relax on the road.
D.Avoid making many plans ahead.
