Jane Freilicher
For more than fifty years, as Abstract Expressionism gave way to Pop, then to Minimalism, and on to Neo-Expressionism, until art’s isms (主义) exhausted themselves, Freilicher devoted herself to painting “eternally fixed afternoons”, finding beauty at home. The fifteen works in the exhibition at the Kasmin gallery, lead you into the artist’s inside.—Andrea K. Scott (kasmingallery.com)
Betye Saar
Two years ago, the Getty Research Institute mentioned Betye Saar as “the conscience (良心) of the art world for over fifty years”. The small but abundant exhibition “Betye Saar: Call and Response”, at the Morgan Library & Museum, pairs the artist’s found-object collection with her less often seen sketchbooks (素描簿).—A.K.S. (themorgan.org)
Frederick Weston
When this black, H. I. V.—positive artist arrived in New York from Detroit, in 1973, he wanted to become a fashion designer. But the city’s culture scene at the time was overwhelmingly white, and Weston withdrew into a world that he could control. An exhibition of Weston’s work is on view at Ortuzar Projects, which is to remind us that society’s best visual critics often fall through the cracks, and to question why it still takes us so long to recognize them.—Hilton Als (ortuzarprojects.com)
Stella Zhong
A raised floor, the color of greenish grey transforms the Chapter gallery into something like a sci-fi stage set or a mini golf course. Zhong, who was born in Shenzhen, China, achieves an effect that is playful and strangely cold. Moving around in the exhibition is rather like living in the space of a video game.—J. F. With summertime water temperatures ranging from 13 to 18 degrees, a wet suit for swimming and surfing is a must. Although it’s often foggy, on clear days you can see out to Pillar Point Harbor, a wonderful fishing site.
Rent a sea kayak (小艇) from Half Moon Bay Kayak Co., the first kayak company in the country to equip their boats with a GPS tracking device (装置). You can rent such a sea kayak and you will be at perfect surf wave, Mavericks ($15 per hour, www.hmbkayak.com).
Hikers and runners will enjoy the gentle wind along the waterfront seaside path, connecting several beaches, or at the paths of Pursima Cree Redwoods Open Space Preserve in the hills above town.
Where to eat: Stay by the Half Moon Bay Brewery for high quality dishes, made with locally grown ingredients, or go back with the locals and a Maverick’s Amber Ale on the waterfront deck (www.hmbbrewingco.com).
Where to stay: For five-stay expensive hotels, check into the Riz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay (from $305, www.ritzcarlton.com/resorts/half moonbay/). Enjoy the open-air dishes at the comfort of the new Ocean Terrace Restaurant overlooking the sea and be sure to enroll (使加入) the kids in the year-round Ritz Kids program. With electric scooter sharing already appearing in many cities and the biggest operator eyeing the Chicago market, Moreno is trying to make the rules of the road before electric scooters arrive.” It’s yet another means of transportation and we need to welcome them and make the regulations in advance if we are really serious about reducing traffic and reducing air pollution,”said Moreno.
Moreno said that in other cities, electric scooter riders have ignored helmet rules and traffic laws. They have parked illegally and ridden scooters on sidewalks. Those are the problems he’s trying to avoid. The rules would require related companies to first get an “Electric Scooter Share License”. To get the license, companies would need to provide a minimum of 100 scooters operating at a maximum(最高的)speed of 20 miles per hour.
Bird is the nation’s leading electric vehicle sharing company. It has raised $100 million and begun operations in many cities. Bird ‘s spokesman Kenneth Baer said his company welcomes the Chicago regulations, which can help to avoid the start-up problems it has met with in other cities.
“We follow the laws on the books. It happens to be that in a good number of cities the law is silent or not clear how to treat this new technology. And that causes some troubles,”said Baer. “If the rules of the road are officially made in advance then it is very clear. I think the Chicago regulations really would give the citizens a great way to get around the city.”

A.The scooter-sharing laws are too strict. |
B.People take no notice of traffic regulations |
C.Electric scooter sharing has many disadvantages |
D.These cities lack specific rules to deal with scooter sharing |
A.They are forward-thinking. |
B.They will limit scooter sharing |
C.They should be further discussed. |
D.They should follow the example of other cities. |

Pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble. It is known as Color Blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white.
Not being able to see in color is bad enough. But one islander, Herrol, who's a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image.“I find it difficult to go outside in the sun," he says, "because when it's sunny! cannot see to do my work."
But if being truly color blind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap live in a totally black-and- white world?
Well, we know that in 1780 the population of Pingelap was almost wiped out by a tsunami. As few as 20 people survived, one of whom was the king. Ir's believed he had a genetic fault that that causes color-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations.
There is one advantage. Herrol can see well, really well, in the dark. So when it gets dark, Herrol and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames. "This type of fishing is fun," Herrol says, especially if we catch pens.So even though it's hard work we enjoy it."

The research by the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland tested what could best secure smartphones from so-called "shoulder surfing attacks". So, if you are worried about someone looking over your shoulder while you unlock your phone, would you be wiser to use a PIN or a pattern? According to this research at least, the answer to that question is pretty clear.
Those who have a single observation of your screen as you unlock it with a swipe pattern will be successful in knowing it 64.2% of the time. Security can be improved somewhat by removing lines on the pattern lock (35.3% success rate for shoulder surfers).
By comparison, the use of a six-digit PIN greatly reduces the chances for an attacker to determine how to unlock your smartphone, with just 10.8% of attacks being successful. In tests, viewers were able to determine the users' lock-screen patterns from up to six feet away, from a variety of different angles, even after a single viewing.
Indeed, when it comes to safety, past research has determined that an unlock pattern is about the same as a three-digit PIN -something I hope that none of us would rely upon.
The researchers' conclusion is that a PIN of six digits or more is the most secure de fence against shoulder surfing attacks, and while both types of pattern lock are poor, patterns without lines provide greater security.
Unsurprisingly, the research confirmed that phones with larger screens were found to provide less security against shoulder surfing attacks.
1. What did the research focus on?A.What lock-screen patterns people use. | B.When shoulder surfing attacks occur. |
C.Why people prefer numeric PIN codes. | D.How you can unlock your phone safely. |

Strength is controlled by a number of factors----the most studied by far is skeletal muscle. However, the nervous system is also an important, though not fully understood, determining factor of strength and weakness.
Brian C. Clark and colleagues set out to test how the system functions in strength development. They designed an experiment to measure changes in wrist (腕) muscle strength in three groups of healthy adults. Twenty-nine subjects wore a hard cast that extended from just below the elbow (肘) past the fingers, effectively preventing the hand and wrist from moving, for four weeks. Fifteen subjects who did not wear casts served as the control group.
Of the 29 people wearing a hard cast, half were asked to regularly perform an exercise, imagining they were strongly contracting their wrist for five seconds and then resting for five seconds. This was repeated four times in a row followed by a one-minute break for a total of 13 rounds per session and five sessions per week. The other half performed no imagination exercises.
At the end of the four-week experiment, both groups who wore casts had lost strength in their unmoving limbs (肢体) when compared to the control group. But the group that performed imagination exercises lost 50% less strength than the non-imagination group. The nervous system’s ability to fully make the muscle recover also returned more quickly in the imagination group compared to the non-imagination group.

After two years of chemo (化疗) that helped control the disease, ay body was weak and lifeless. I felt as if I were a puppet who needed help to lift his arms or hold up his head.
I began to run. After six months my strength had come back. On one of my runs, one where I felt I could run forever I decided I was going to try to run a marathon.
After telling my Dad about my plan, he told me of a program that trains people to run marathon. while raising funds for Leukemia research at the same time. So that summer, through the Leukemia Society’s Team in Training program, I started to train for the Marine Corps Marathon. During mile after mile of uncertainty, the day finally came to run the marathon.
On October 27, 1996, at 8 A. M., along with 19. 000 other brave souls I started on a 26.2-mile journey that I will never forget.
I first saw my wife Patty at the six-mile mark She seemed happy that I was still looking as if I knew what I was doing, and having a good time doing it. At Mile 17, my mind was going back to those two horrible years that tried to bring my family and me down. I saw her again. The concern in her face told me she knew I was starting to struggle. I felt as if we were thinking the same, nine more miles and these last few years will be behind us.
That thought alone pulled me forward. Mile 22, 23, slowing but going, 24, 25, then there it was. The Iwo Jima War Memorial (纪念馆). I have seen nothing so grand and inspiring in my life. Three hours and forty-one minutes after I started, I crossed what I think has to be the most fitting finish line in all of road racing!
That night the Leukemia Society gave me a pin at post-race party that simply says, “Leukenia26.2.”
If God wills, my cancer may once again take away my hair and my strength, maybe even my life. But it can never take away my pin, or the fact that I am a marathoner.

Once during a conversation with Tom Brokaw, who wrote the best- selling hook The Greatest Generation, I told him, "You left out my parents." They didn’t go off to war, but they belonged to the Greatest Generation. They, too, were part of the foundation that made America truly great. They kept the home fires burning.
Our mother gloried in being a housewife and mother. Having been a teacher in her early adult years, when education was more important than anything else, she gave up her job to raise a family .She was an excellent cook, but she had to cook on a wood stove. There was no refrigerator, nothing electric. But nobody was ever better at making do. In addition to all the household chores and responsibilities, she went to the fields every day to help produce a crop to pay the rent and to provide for the family. She and my dad worked hard to save every penny possible.
They saved ever7 penny to buy a farm late in life. They also saved enough money to live out their respective live with home care without taking up residency in a nursing home. They were fiercely independent. If you had suggested they accept a government transfer payment, they would have spit in your eye.
