Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient institution which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern creativity has changed this. Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological (使用细菌的) or chemical weapons, may soon offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international problems in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is the most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration (仲裁) according to agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.

There are those who say that the adoption of this or that thought would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All thoughts are based on statements which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their followers believe in them that they are willing to go to war in support them.

The movement of world opinion during the past few years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It is believed that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the attitude towards them is a better one than it was several years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that people should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between different countries, but between man and the atom bomb.

【推荐1】We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head because of a cold in the muscles (肌肉) of your neck, or because an unexpected twist (扭曲) has made your neck ache. The slightest move makes you jump with pain. Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck.

That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.

One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands—often at the wrong time—during a performance in the theater. He keeps you from hearing the actors.

Even worse are those who can never arrive before the curtain goes up and the play begins. They come hurrying down to your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your hat and heavy coat in your lap. You must stand up to let them pass. You are proud of yourself-control after they have settled into their seats...Well, what now ... God, one of them is up again. He forgot to go to the men 's room, and once more you have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass. Now, that is "a pain in the neck".

Another, well-known to us all, is the person sitting behind you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn (爆米花); he is chewing (嚼) loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go for another bag of popcorn, or something to drink.

Then, there is the man sitting next to you at lunch, smoking. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth.

We must not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let him. You are reading the newspaper and he gets closer so that he can read the paper with you. He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.

We also call such a person a "rubber neck", always getting close to where it does not belong, like neighbors who watch all your visitors. They enjoy learning about your personal business. People have a strong dislike for "rubber necks". They hate being watched secretly.

1. According to the passage, how do you feel when late comers walk back and forth in front of you in a cinema?
A.Disturbed.B.Bored.
C.Ignored.D.Relaxed.
2. A "rubber neck" often       .
A.says bad words behind people
B.quarrels face to face with neighbors
C.bargains with salespeople over the price
D.asks about other people's business
3. Which of the following persons CANNOT be described as "a pain in the neck"?
A.Someone who often claps at the wrong time during a performance.
B.Someone who feels ache in his neck due to a cold in the muscles.
C.Someone who sits next to you smoking, which you never enjoy.
D.Someone who keeps eating or talking all through the movies.
4. What is the main purpose of the author?
A.To tell people what might be bad manners in public.
B.To criticize (批评) the people who might be "a pain in the neck".
C.To show anger to those who are described as "a pain in the neck".
D.To tell people how to stop the pain in the neck.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了“善待自己文化”,呼吁人们在忙碌的生活中更常见地对待自己。
【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。

It’s after midnight and you’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and you sigh, “Tomorrow, I’ m getting ice cream. I deserve to treat myself.”

This year, the so-called “treat yourself culture” has expanded far beyond what was once a reward-based mindset. Now, “treating yourself” has become more about stress-caused indulgence (放纵). It represents the more deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put ourselves under.

The root of the problem lies in our belief that we should be doing more work if it isn’t hard enough. Especially at a top university, I constantly find myself wanting to do more. I want more credits, a higher-grade point average, and more responsibilities I’ll later use as conversation topics in interviews. This drive is by no means a bad thing. We all are trying to eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life. However, there are a lot of problems with this logic. Without sounding completely hopeless and pessimistic, it is possible that the future we imagine in our twenties will not become reality. Therefore, it is important to integrate things that make us happy with work, school or life induced stress.

Psychology certainly supports this belief. While having good self-control was positively associated with happiness, being able to enjoy life’s little pleasures without feeling ashamed of doing so is just as important. For example, even if you have a busy schedule of work, make time to stop by your favorite coffee shop or spend ten minutes to go on a walk outdoors.

I cannot urge you to give up your late nights of studying, energy drinks and all. I cannot tell you to always choose to do something that makes you happy over something you have or should do. Frankly, this is just not the way life works. We have to put up with the hard work and put in the time. Without pain, we’d also lose happiness and joy. It’s all about balance.

So, instead of looking at everything as a way to handle the stress and something to “treat myself”, let’s try to make treating ourselves a far more common practice in the busy lives we lead.

1. What causes the so-called “treat yourself culture”?
2. What does “this logic” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
3. Decide which part of the following statement is wrong. Underline it and explain why.
• Working hard plays a more important role in a happy life than enjoying life’s little pleasures.
4. Are you a follower of “treat yourself culture”? Why or why not? (In about 40 words)

【推荐3】A recent study shows that more than 90% of adults report hearing earworm songs on a weekly basis. They can't walk into their office without Rihanna's voice singing “work, work, work” in their mind. That was commonly known as earworm songs — those sticky tunes that continue to play in their heads.

Luckily, most people report earworm songs as pleasant. But others find them annoying or even maddening. “Some people are troubled by them to the point that it disturbs life,” says Elizabeth Margulis, a professor who has studied earworm songs.

Margulis says earworm songs tend to have some predictable characteristics. For one thing, they tend to be small parts of a song — not the whole track. And “the songs you've heard recently also have the most possibility to get stuck in your memory,” she says.

But sometimes something strange and unpredictable can also start a track playing in your head. “Once I was at the doctor's office and saw a poster of a man who I thought looked like Gaston — a character from Beauty and the Beast,” Margulis recalls. A couple minutes passed, and she realized she couldn't get “Be our Guest”, the song in the movie, out of her head, even though she hadn't thought of the tune in years. In that instance, she was able to identify what touched of her earworm: the Gaston-looking man in the poster. “But the connections can be really unclear,” she says.

Margulis points out that, in all of human history, recorded music is a very new phenomenon. She says some have inferred that earworm songs are also new — the unintended consequence of being able to hear the same song played everywhere in the same way over and over again. So far, the convincing explanation for why human beings experience earworm songs remains a mystery. But there are some well-established ways to cast off the earworm songs.

“Finding a mentally demanding task and putting your mind on it usually shifts attention away from internal music. People tend to get earworms when performing tasks that don't require their full attention — stuff like doing the dishes,” Margulis says.

Chewing gum can also help. When a song is stuck in our heads, it's almost like we're singing along with it. If you make your mouth do something else — chewing gum, eating a meal or talking with a friend — that can kick out the earworm.

You could also face your enemy. By listening to the full track that includes the passage stuck in your head, you may find “closure” and relief.
