Feet help us walk, run, dance, and jump. The words feet and foot are also used in everyday speech.

To be under someone’s feet means to be troublesome. In other words, you are standing too close to someone and are getting in their way. Some adults criticize (批评) children for being under foot.

Speaking of children, if someone says their home will soon have the pitter-patter of tiny feet, it means the family is expecting a baby!

Now, people who are active do not let grass grow under their feet. They are never in one place for very long. People who can think and take action at the same time are said to be able to think on their feet.

Some people appear to have it all. They have money, a good education, good looks, a great family and a large circle of friends. You could say they have the world at their feet. This means whatever they want seems to be there for them.

People who have both feet firmly on the ground are realistic and practical. They are not dreamy. You might say such a person is well grounded. If you are a bad dancer, you might be described as having two left feet. To dance well, it is better to have a right foot and a left foot.

Sam loves skiing. He thinks that it would be fun to own a ski resort (滑雪场) high in the mountains. But he knows nothing about running a business. So, he decides to get his feet wet. In other words, he wants to get used to a new situation.

He joins an organization for resort owners and attends their meetings. He travels to ski areas all over the United States. This helps Sam get his foot in the door. Having a foot in the door is a starting point. This expression comes from people selling things door-to-door. They would block the door with their foot so people couldn’t close the door on them.

【推荐1】Relics are artifacts(人工制品) from ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Mayans. On many occasions, archaeologists discover relics containing text written in ancient languages. These items could be ancient books and scrolls(卷轴) or they could simply be vases and coins with writing on them. Interpreting these texts can be difficult, particularly if the language is a previously undiscovered one, and the texts may additionally be hard to read if they are incomplete or if sections have worn away. Another complication is that interpreting them must be done without the reader introducing any bias (偏见) based upon modern language and culture.

Lost languages are among the numerous barriers archaeologists must break through to interpret texts on relics. One solution is to employ a key, such as the Rosetta Stone, which was discovered in Egypt in 1799. It contains an ancient Egyptian decree(法令) written in three languages, one of which is in Egyptian hieroglyphics(象形文字), an unknown language at the time of its discovery; however, another language on it is ancient Greek, which scholars understood. By comparing the text, scholars made great leaps(跃进) in interpreting hieroglyphics. Unfortunately, other ancient languages, such as Minoan Linear A, have not been figured out primarily because no key that can assist translation efforts has been discovered yet.

The Rosetta Stone was mostly unscathed, but its missing parts increased the difficulty of interpreting its text, something which frequently happens with relics. The passage of time may result in carvings, paintings, drawings, and textual inscriptions(题字) getting worn away. For example, the Tel Dan Stone, a stone with ancient Hebrew inscriptions that was found in Israel in 1993, is broken in places, and large pieces of text are missing. The result is a long-standing controversy over the precise interpretation of the writing on it.

How modern scholars view texts is another barrier to interpreting them since translators have their own personal biases. Researchers must therefore keep the historical and cultural context of the period when the text was written in mind. This can be difficult when little is known of the people who wrote the text and when or why they wrote it .

1. What do we know about the Rosetta Stone?
A.It has ancient Greek law on it.
B.It was discovered in Israel in 1993.
C.It was employed to interpret hieroglyphics.
D.It consists of three unknown ancient languages.
2. Why is Minoan Linear A mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To tell the key to it has been discovered.
B.To show it still remains a mystery for scholars.
C.To prove it originated form ancient Egypt.
D.To confirm what scholars have achieved.
3. What does the underlined word “unscathed” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.untouchedB.unexplainedC.undamagedD.undiscovered
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Searching for lost languages.
B.Interpreting texts on ancient relics.
C.Discovering ancient Hebrew inscriptions.
D.Removing barriers to language exploring.

Shakespeare’s talent for making the English language into the powerful written word has ensured his lasting influence on our everyday language. Hundreds of expressions were invented by Shakespeare.     2

They only know some well-known expressions, such as, “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” can be attributed (认为是……所作) to Shakespeare.

3     Many of his original words, for example, “uncomfortable” and “fashionable”, are still used today. Shakespeare’s effect on vocabulary is rather amazing when considering how much language has changed since his lifetime.

Shakespeare’s use of punctuation is also distinctive (有特色的). His punctuation is a clue to the way a piece should be performed. Punctuation is required to signal how each line should be delivered.     4     Consequently, lines without punctuation naturally seem to gather speed and emotional purpose. When analyzing a Shakespearean text, stop and consider how punctuation is used.

In conclusion, Shakespeare is truly a great author.     5     We will always have the benefit of his remarkable works for many years to come.

Her trainer, Penny Patterson, thought Koko went further still, signing in novel ways and showing complex emotions. According to Ms. Patterson, when a cat that Koko loved was killed in an accident, Koko signed: “Cat, cry, have-sorry, Koko-love.” When Koko died last month, some of her obituaries (讣告) mourned the gorilla who had “mastered American sign language”.

Then came the critics, from linguists and experts in sign languages. There is no doubt that animals communicate. Bees can demonstrate the direction and distance of a source of food. Dolphins make noises that function like names. Yet there is an important distinction between communication and language.

Take the misleading term “body language”. It is sometimes claimed that words convey just 7% of meaning, and that body language and tone of voice do the rest. But try conveying a fact like “It will rain on Tuesday” with your eyebrows, and the difference becomes clear. Language allows for clear statements, questions and commands.

Noam Chomsky has argued that people have a kind of “universal grammar”, and that all humankind’s languages are mere variations (变奏曲) on a theme. He has changed his mind repeatedly on what makes up the essential of human language, but one obvious candidate is syntax—rules, not just words, which allow the construction of huge variety of meaningful expressions. No language in the world merely uses relevant signs together like communications at the tourist-abroad level of pointing and making exaggerated facial expressions.

That gorillas lack syntax should not blind humans to their magnificence. But the fact that Koko could communicate should not mislead observers into thinking she possessed language.

1. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
A.Describe an amazing animal.B.Inform people of Koko’s death.
C.Introduce the topic of the text.D.Show Ms Patterson’s technique.
2. What can we infer about language according to the text?
A.It consists of words and body language and syntax.
B.Body language actually can’t be taken as language.
C.It’s power that both humans and animals possess.
D.Facial expressions allow for clear statements and commands.
3. Which of the following can best convey “It will rain on Tuesday”?
A.Facial expressions.B.Eyebrow movements.
C.Pointing.D.Dialect.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Human language is different from mere communication.
B.Rules play an essential part in human communication.
C.Noam Chomsky is a brilliant master of human language.
D.Koko’s extraordinary skills deserve people’s recognition.
