Aunt Karen always had a special place in my heart. When I was growing up, I knew I could count on her to have room for me on her lap and words of love and encouragement when I needed to hear them. When she died five years ago, I was devastated. The whole family was still in shock when her husband, Uncle Ronnie, died a week later. I longed to have a small item of Aunt Karen’s to remember her by, but seeing her children and grandchildren overcome by the grief of this double loss made me shy away from asking.

A few months after Aunt Karen’s death, I was on my way to work when I saw Rescued Treasures, a local second-hand store. I only had a couple of dollars on me and didn’t really intend to buy anything, but I stopped anyway just to look inside. I had been shopping around for a few minutes when a small, black handbag caught my eye. It wasn’t fancy or special. I didn’t really need a handbag and continued to look around the store, but something kept drawing me back to that handbag. Finally, I checked the price tag (标签). It was just one dollar.

The handbag stayed in the back of my car for weeks until I came upon it during a car clean-up. I opened it up. I couldn’t believe it. They hadn’t even cleaned it out. It was still full of junk, old candy wrappers, old receipts (收据) and used paper. Usually the store emptied things inside, so there wouldn’t be any surprises for a new owner.

I threw away some wastes, and sorted through the receipts, when I found one item in the small inside pocket. It was an insurance card with the name “Karen Stair” written on it. I began to cry. My beloved Aunt Karen. This was her handbag.

A.Karen’s husband survived her by five years.

A.very worriedB.a little lonely

【推荐1】It was February and Danny Filippidis and his friends were skiing around. After a few days of fun and relaxation, their annual trip was coming to a close. Danny wanted to capture a few more memories of it to post online when they got home. The problem was, he'd left his cell phone in the car.

By the time Danny realized this, he and his friends were already halfway up Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. Not wanting to miss a moment, he told his friends to wait while he skied back down to fetch the phone. Danny was an adult and an experienced skier, so they had no reason to doubt his eventual return.

However, it wasn't until it began to get dark that his friends finally realized something may have gone wrong. They alerted(报警) the authorities, who began a ground search in no time. Before long, his family and friends came down to help as well. But Danny was nowhere to be found.

What the rescue teams didn't know at the time was that, by the time the alarm went out, Danny wasn't even in Lake Placid anymore. He'd taken a wrong turn on his way back to the car, falling down and becoming knocked out. It was dusk by the time he woke up, not knowing where he was.

Danny struggled his way to the road. He flagged down a truck in the hope of securing a ride off the mountain. The truck stopped and he climbed into the warm cab. After telling the trucker where he was going, he fell into a heavy sleep. When the trucker finally informed him that they had arrived, it had been midnight, when his family and friends were still searching the cold wilderness for any sign of him.

Danny often reflects on what might have happened if he hadn't been found by that trucker. To this day, Danny Filippidis doesn’t know the trucker' s name. He doubts whether he could even point him out if he saw him on the street and the authorities have been unable to track the man down as well.

1. Why did Danny ski back to fetch his phone?
A.To surf the Net.B.To avoid it being stolen.

【推荐2】In August 2005, at the age of 14, Kristin Beale, together with her friend, was riding on Jet Ski on Lake Gaston, along the Virginia-North Carolina border, when another ran over them, killing her friend and making Beale suffer a brain injury and a spinal cord (脊髓) injury.

Previously, being a Henrico’s Deep Run High School student, Beale took part in the competitions of cheerleading and hockey. Afterwards, she had to relearn how to perform daily tasks. “When I was in the hospital, doctors told my parents I’d be a vegetable, not being able to breathe or swallow. I wanted to disprove everything they had on their list,” she said. “I told my parents, ‘I’m going to work and do more’.”

Her parents discovered a hospital in California for people struggling with spinal cord injuries and flew Beale there to spend four hours a day for more than a month relearning tasks and strengthening her muscles. She traveled to California nine times for this.

To process her thoughts, Beale began writing about her experiences. By the time she finished, she’d written32 stories. She then gathered them into her first nonfiction book, Greater Things, which was about how people react to her and how she has overcome her injuries. “I never thought it’d become a book, but that’s how it all started,” Beale said.

Now in 2023 working for her publisher, Morgan James Publishing in Hampton, Beale continues to write. Another nonfiction book, A Million Suns, details her journey “from the darkness of disability into the sunlight of circumstance” and how she has found happiness. In her new fiction offering, Wide Awake, she assigns names and personalities to 12 objects belonging to a young girl, Madison.

Additionally, Beale has created the first episode (集) of a YouTube show based on her book Date Me,   medaled as a wheelchair fencer and finished 16 marathons with a wheelchair since 2011.“I’ve worked hard to get to where I am,” she said.

【推荐3】My earliest memories are of having two very old parents. My mother was 42 when I was born, which back then was seriously old to have a baby, and a little risky too. My oldest brother was 14 years older than me and the middle brother ten years older. When I was quite small they had both left home. I grew up almost like an only child. I tended to amuse myself and play in the garden and draw and paint and shoot. I suppose you do learn as an only child that you’re going to have to get on with life by yourself. You’re going to have to find things that excite and move you.

I was shipped off to Sunday school in Edinburgh when I was seven years old. I felt a proper Charlie, because I was the only little boy among the Sunday school children who was wearing a kilt (苏格兰短裙). I also felt rather threatened by the stories we were taught. Old-school Christianity was filled with punishment and anger that I didn’t really enjoy. For the rest of my attendance at Sunday school, I didn’t get closer than climbing a tree outside the church and hiding in the branches, waiting until the children came out, then dropping down to join the school team and walking out of the church to be met by my parents, who were then reassured that I’d been to Sunday school as I was supposed to.

When my parents moved to Blackpool, my aunt, who came to live with us, took me to two or three concerts. I got to see Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and the early Rolling Stones performing at Blackpool’s ABC Theatre-which, when I was 12 years old, was an important moment of recognising that that isn’t what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, because the music they played was not what I was enjoying. I was drawn to the blues and Black American folk music. It felt very real and human.

1. What do we know about the author’s childhood?
A.Many things moved him.B.He had to do many things on his own.
C.He liked playing in the garden.D.He got on badly with his brothers.
2. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “a proper Charlie” in paragraph 2?
A.A real fool.B.An independent child.
C.A capable student.D.A clever student.
3. What experiences did the author have in his Sunday school?
A.He liked wearing a kilt.B.He often studied in the trees.
C.He was threatened by others.D.He was often absent from school.
4. What can we infer from the text?
A.His brothers were not important to him.B.He never walked into the church.
C.His parents took him to some concerts.D.The blues caught his interest.
