Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like?     1

A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for about 1,500 students.     2    When students first arrive at school, they go straight to their lockers to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather rent than buy them.    3

American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough.    4     When they turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver’s exam, they can begin driving themselves to school.

5    They must take science, math, English and social studies. They can choose art, homemaking, fashion design and other classes. In some schools students are required to take one or more of the following special classes: health education, physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.

The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities include sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook, speech, school newspaper, photograph or student government.

A.Every student is given a locker.
B.Each day, students take six or seven classes.
C.Sometimes their parents drive them to school.
D.Students must pay back if they lost any of them.
E.This is because each teacher has their own classroom.
F.The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon.
G.This article will describe a typical American high school and its students.

【推荐1】Breathe, wave and smile. Along with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers. The huge stadium shook with all the whistling and clapping.

It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the moment. Each deserved it. The seniors had been preparing for four years for this once-in-a-lifetime moment—the commencement (graduation ceremony).

Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening address. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in marron cap and gown.

Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthem followed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance(美国的爱国誓言).

Students who had excelled academically gave farewell speeches. The tears in some eyes convinced me that many had deep feelings about the occasion. It was as the class motto says, “Life brings us tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry; the smiles fade; but the memories last forever.”

Then came the core (the most important part) of the commencement. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest.

To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. A girl sitting next to me even started yawning. But it wasn’t boring for those receiving the diploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives.

A new page in the book of that person’s life had turned. They were glimpsing their futures: futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage.

【推荐2】In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and to concentrate on my courses. I was quickly labeled a "brain." I did so well that by the end of senior year I had perfect grades and enough college credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework.

But in early June of senior year, the principal called me into his office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I was surprised to look at him, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work? I murmured something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have broken up my perfect record.

I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. I agreed to introduce my friend Judy, who would then give her own, full-length speech.

Graduation day soon arrived, I’d been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the stage without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done and heading back to my seat. I accomplished something I’d never dreamed of — I spoke in front of hundreds of people.

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to take part in class at college, to give oral reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation — or ever. But I’m glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I’m faced with the prospect of doing something I feared. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments.

3. How did the author feel at the beginning of the graduation speech?
A.Excited.B.Moved.

4. What did the speech bring to the author at last?
A.She had nothing to fear in life,
B.She won enough college credits.
C.She got rid of her sense of shyness.
D.She desired to become a speaker.

【推荐3】For the first time in two years, our school held a Halloween homecoming dance. This year’s homecoming was around a recent soccer victory against the neighboring school. Everyone was in a particularly festive mood.

At the same time, for a safer gathering during the COVID-19, we were required to hold the dance outdoors if we wanted to go mask-free. This was unfortunate because temperatures in Boston were expected to be no higher than 10℃ that night. Later, I realized that the cold was the least of my worries.

We sent apology letters out to the neighbors surrounding the school and told them to expect loud music on Oct 29. Then on that Friday night, members of the Student Union gathered together to decorate the tent provided by the school as a protection from the cold.

After two hours of blowing balloons, putting fake spider webs on trees and setting up the food table, people started showing up in their costumes. I ran away to the bathroom to dress up. Having seen all the news about Asian hate in the US, I decided that it was important to present Asian spirit — thus I proudly dressed myself up in a traditional Chinese qipao.

When I got outside again, the dance was in full swing. There was a DJ spinning songs, and the lights were flashing away, though no one was on the dance floor yet. However, things took a sharp turn when a familiar song — Gangnam Style by South Korean singer Psy — came on, and the dance floor was never empty again until the end of the evening. With every beat drop, the crowd jumped crazily to the beat, and I followed along. My feet hurt so much at the end of the evening, but I’ll admit that it was worth all of the excitement I experienced.

1. What can we learn about the homecoming dance?
A.It was our school’s first-ever homecoming.B.It was celebrated after a sports victory.
C.It was held to fight against COVID-19.D.It aimed to compete with another school.
2. What was the challenge they had faced in preparation?
A.Requirements for mask wearing outdoors.B.A lack of decorating materials.
C.Noise complaints from neighbors.D.Low temperature at night.
3. Why was the author dressed herself in qipao?
A.To stop Asian hate.B.To promote Halloween spirit.
C.To show Asian culture.D.To show her uniqueness.
4. What does the underlined phrase “in full swing” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Going well and strong.B.Getting well prepared.
C.Getting started officially.D.Being in an awkward silence.
