It wasn’t fair.
Aminah always studied hard, so there was nothing unusual about her receiving top marks at the end of the year. But Farhan was often playing with the village boys. To help motivate him this year, their father had promised to buy him a bicycle if his grades improved. It really touched Farhan.
At the end of the school year, Aminah received top marks as she always did. And; as usual, her parents gave her100 rupees as a reward.
For the first time, Farhan got top marks too. True to his word, their father came home with a bicycle. It was well used. But to Farhan, it was the most beautiful bicycle in Pakistan. Farhan’s friends cheered when they saw it. It was understood that something as precious as a bicycle would be shared with everyone.
Well, almost everyone.
After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride, Aminah and her friends grew resentful (愤恨不满的). They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, watching the lazy brook flow at the hill’s foot. They could hear the boys cheering on the other side of the hill. “Why doesn’t he let us ride, Aminah?” asked Fatima. Aminah shrugged.
“He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!” replied Shehnaz.
Sarah shook her head. “But Aminah is his baji (姐姐)! He should share with her.” As they talked, the boys’ noise grew closer. Aminah looked up and saw her brother on his bicycle at the top of the hill. “Look! I can do it!” he yelled. The boys cheered. Suddenly he and the bike were rushing in the direction of the girls, toward the brook.
“Stop the bike!” the kids yelled.
“I can’t!” Farhan grabbed the handlebars. His body was locked.
Aminah jumped up. “Quick! I need your scarf!” Fatima and Shehnaz slipped their scarves off their shoulders and tossed them to Aminah, who removed her own scarf and quickly tied thick knots, connecting the scarves together.

Mrs. Li found that parenting her three children was challenging, nothing was ever clean and there’s not enough time for her in the day to do everything.
She spent her days rushing from task to task, cleaning and making sure her children had all they needed. She constantly organized their living room, which was suddenly full of toys. Cooking and cleaning after meals and snacks seemed to take half of her day. She hardly ever sat; something always needed to be done.
One day she was back home. She had a deadline for a huge project at work, and she was really feeling the pressure. When she’d picked up her children from school that afternoon, she’d popped into the grocery store to buy a rotisserie chicken (烤鸡肉) for dinner. She figured that would buy her an extra hour to work on her project since she wouldn’t have to cook that night.
Then, it was 6:00 p.m., and she was typing away, making good progress. Her kids were downstairs watching TV. Her 7-year-old son, Nathan, came into the room and said, “Mom, I’m getting hungry. Can you warm up the chicken now?”
“In a little bit,” she answered without looking up from the computer. “I’m trying to work.”
Ten minutes later, her older son, Jordan, came in to tell her that he too was hungry, and she needed to warm up the chicken. “I’ll do it as soon as I’m at a stopping point,” she said.
Fifteen minutes after that, her fifteen-year-old daughter, Julia, came in trying to make the same request but when she saw her mother was still busy working, she quietly backed out and closed the door behind her. She decided to help her mother.

Once upon a time, there was a big mango (芒果) tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the treetops, ate the mangoes, and took a nap (小睡) under the shadow...He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. As time went by, the little boy grew up, and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree with a sad look on his face.“Come and play with me ,” the tree asked the boy.“I am no longer a kid. I don’t play around trees any more, ” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, I don’t have money...but you can pick all my mangoes and sell them so that you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the mangoes on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back. The tree was sad.
One day, the boy grown into a man returned. The tree was so excited.“Come and play with me ,” the tree said.“I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me? “Sorry, I don’t have a house, but you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the man cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t come back afterward. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted.“Come and play with me!” The tree said.“I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and didn’t come back for a long time.

【推荐1】A new, first-of-its-kind study examines the connection between teacher burnout and students’ stress levels. Researchers from the University of British Columbia collected saliva (唾液) samples from over 400 elementary school children, grades four to seven, at 17 public schools. Cortisol (皮质醇) levels were then assessed from the samples as the hormone is commonly used as a biological indicator of stress. Correspondingly, teacher burnout was determined through survey results.
Investigators found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more burnout, or feelings of emotional exhaustion, students’ cortisol levels were elevated (提升). Higher cortisol levels in elementary school children have been linked to learning difficulties as well as mental health problems. The study appears in the journal Social Science & Medicine. “This suggests that stress contagion (蔓延) might be taking place in the classroom among students and their teachers,” said Eva Oberle, Ph.D., the study’s lead author.
Indeed, the relationship between student stress and teacher burnout is a chicken and egg question. “It is unknown what came first, elevated cortisol or teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem in the classroom.” Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support for teachers, which may impact teachers’ ability to effectively manage their students. A poorly managed classroom can contribute to students’ needs not being met and increasing stress. This could be reflected in elevated cortisol levels in students.
Alternatively, stress could originate from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioral problems, or special needs. In this case, teachers could feel overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.
“Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and supports for teachers are cut,” said Oberle. “It is clear from a number of recent research studies that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need adequate resources and support in their jobs in order to battle burnout and relieve stress in the classroom,” said University of British Columbia education professor Kimberly Schonert Reichl, Ph.D., the study’s co-author. “If we do not support teachers, we risk the damage of students.”

It is a common sight on campus or in the streets: a young person rides by on an electric scooter, traveling quickly and proudly. But Beijing’s traffic authorities have said that starting on Sept.5, people who are caught riding electric scooters on public roads or bicycle lanes will be fined 10 yuan. They will also be given a warning not to use the vehicles on public roads again.
The announcement was made after traffic police in Shanghai started a campaign to get electric scooters off public roads, with police officers stopping riders because the scooters could cause traffic problems.
The Beijing Consumer Association said it had tested more than 20 electric scooters of different brands recently and found that most had substandard brakes. It added that 16 of the tested scooters could go faster than the maximum 20 km per hour set for electric bikes. According to the traffic police, people who ride electric scooters at certain speeds can easily bump into the vehicles in the vehicle lane and hurt people who walk in the bicycle lanes.
But seeing the benefits that electric scooters have brought to young people, experts are worried that the ban may take effect slowly.
Electric scooters are a great answer to the ‘last mile problem’ of getting from a public transport station to one’s home. They’re light enough to throw over your shoulder. They’re easy to ride just about anywhere and don’t need a lot of physical effort. The scooter can travel 25 km on one charge. It’s convenient and easy to control.
They are also good for environment. Unlike cars and buses, electric scooters produce no carbon dioxide, need no fuel and make almost no noise.
For many young people, they use them to copy cool celebrities they have seen in videos.
