Nov. 21 is World Hello Day. It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created by the United Nations just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973. The philosophy (理念) behind it is: Say “Hello” and stop war.

It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simply saying “Hello” won’t bring about world peace. Still, on a smaller range, the simple act of saying hello to someone can make a lot of difference.

This might not be obvious. After all, it’s such a casual thing and requires so little effort. You raise your head to someone as you pass by them in the school corridor (走廊), say “Hello’ then it’s over.

Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Many people are lonely because they’re shy. They find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want lo. It leads to them feeling cut off.

On this basis, maybe it’s a good idea, not just on Nov. 21, but every day, to remember to say “Hello” to as many people as we can. The stranger who hears your greeting may secretly smile in their heart. You might even make their day.

Greeting other people is the easiest way to be polite. Politeness is the way we individual humans link up with the rest of the human world outside of our circles of family and friends. Politeness is one of the aspects of culture that make us a society rather than just many individuals living in the same space.

No one said it better than the French author Joseph Joubert: “Politeness is the flower of humanity’’. A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视), but through it we can make the world better for another person.

2. What has an effect on people most?

B.They are too shy to communicate with others.
C.They are very fond of living alone.

【推荐1】       It was graduation day at the university where I work and a beautiful day quite unlike the first graduation I attended as a young professor. On that cold day years ago, as we watched the students walking into the hall, one of my colleagues turned to me and said, “Graduation will be one of the happiest and one of the saddest time of your life.” At my inquiry, he answered, “Because the students you have gotten to know have to leave.”
As years went by, my previous confusion about my colleague’s words no longer existed. When I came across naughty students, I have had to rethink why I chose to be a teacher. It obviously isn’t the money. Once a former computer science student of mine called me, asking me if I wanted to have a change. He was working at Nintendo Corporation. His salary was higher than my current one, though I have more education and have worked for over a decade. With my programming skills, he said he could get me hired. I thanked him, but declined his kind offer.
A few days before this current graduation, while working on final grades, I found a note a student had slipped in with her homework. She thanked me for being her teacher and said the things she had learned in my class — not about math, but about life — would be things she would remember long after the math skills had faded away. As I finished reading, I remembered why I had become a teacher.
Now, on this sunny graduation day, as I again observed the sea of blue hats and gowns, I did so with renewed dedication(奉献) and a deeper sense of satisfaction — I will always be grateful that I am a teacher.
1. Hearing his colleague’s description of graduation for the first time, the author _________.
A.quite agreed with his colleagueB.thought it very funny

A.wanted to inform the author of his present job
B.tried to persuade the author to work with him
C.wanted the author to share his joy and satisfaction
D.thought the author wasn’t fit to be a teacher
3. The underlined part blue hats and gowns refers to ________.
A.university colleaguesB.life memories
C.graduates’ clothesD.decorations in the hall
4. The author wrote this passage to _________.
A.express his devotion to being a teacher
B.compare two different graduation ceremonies
C.talk about the meaning of graduation
D.give advice on how to be a good teacher
5. The reason why he earns less than the computer science student is that_________.
A.he was only a young professor
B.he didn’t do well in his work
C.he taught his students more about life than math
D.salaries for different careers are different

【推荐2】Since the end of World War I(WWI) in 1918, Canadians, and millions of others around the world have paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honour the sacrifice our soldiers have made in different ways, fighting for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
Known as Remembrance Day, the day originated as a tribute to the soldiers of WWI, a dark period for our young country, which claimed the lives of over 60,000 military personnel and civilians and over 16 million dead worldwide. As there are no more surviving soldiers of WWI, today we rely on the wisdom and words of those soldiers who fought in the wars that followed and this day now also recognizes their heroic contribution. They tell us to always remember what those brave souls fought for, and all they ask in return is that we never forget.
That’s why we wear the red poppy(罂粟花);that’s why when we see a soldier in uniform we should stop him or her and say “Thank you”; that’s why we take a pause from our busy lives for two short minutes today to honor that request. Yet this message is fading away, year after year. Take for example the terrible decision to allow parents to excuse students from Remembrance Day ceremonies at school. Not only is this disrespectful, it distances the student from his or her classmates.
It is difficult to understand why any Canadian parent would want to remove their child from the time-honored tradition of reading the poem in Flanders Fields, while a wreath of poppies is laid. It is more important than ever to teach school-aged children about our history, no matter how violent it was. Sheltering them from the realities of war is a great disservice. Understanding why conflicts happened, or happen today can help shape choices and decisions they make as adults.
Of course, because we live in a free society, we cannot force an individual to do something. It is unfortunate, but some parents now have their child “opt-out” of the services. These people should be reminded they are free to make such choices only because of the men and women the rest of us are remembering.
1. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a Remembrance Day activity today?
A.Stopping at 11a.m. to remember the war dead.
B.Listening to stories told by WWI soldiers.
C.Wearing a red poppy to show respect.
D.Showing gratitude to soldiers in uniform.
2. What can we learn from the passage?
A.War history is too violent for school children
B.The writer was once a soldier in the Canadian army
C.Few students are willing to take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies.
D.More parents are keeping their children away from frightening war stories.
3. The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph probably refers to_______.
A.the death of so many soldiers in wars
B.the fact that there were so many wars after WWI.
C.people’s ungratefulness for the freedom they have.
D.removing children from Remembrance Day events.
4. The writer believes that ______.
A.the sacrifice of the soldiers should always be remembered.
B.Remembrance Day is becoming less important for soldiers.
C.school no longer think Remembrance Day is necessary.
D.people should be forced to learn about the realities of war.

【推荐3】Are you a tiger? According to the Chinese zodiac, people born in the Year of the Tiger are kind, caring and energetic.    1    Thus, while we admire the handsome animals, we also fear them. But there are lessons from the lives of these striking cats.

Tigers rarely feed in groups in the wild, but when they do, males allow females and cubs (幼崽) to eat first.     2    We, too, should consider the needs of others before we act.

Tigers go after large prey, so they have big ideas. Despite all their planning, tigers only end up with a meal once out of every 12 attempts to catch something. Yet they do not give jom up; they keep trying until they succeed.

Most kinds of cats avoid water, but tigers enjoy water and are very capable swimmers. This fondness of water allows them to live in many different environments. Learn from the tiger, and decide for yourself what you can and cannot do.    3     Explore surprising places.

Tigers’ love of water also allows them to hunt and fight crocodiles. Typically, tigers make a kill by biting the neck of their prey. But a crocodile’s neck has a thick coat of armor. Tigers are not put off by this. Instead, they change their strategy and attack the creature’s vulnerable (脆弱的) areas like its stomach or eyes. Like the tiger, don’t let difficult situations stop you from succeeding.    4

Tigers are as different as people are.     5     So be yourself and show off your stripes (条纹).

A.Try things that others consider impossible.
B.The fur of every tiger has a unique pattern.
C.Therefore, people are different from each other in character.
D.Try more than one approach if your usual strategy isn’t successful.
E.As a result, tigers represent people who are ambitious and considerate.
F.In other words, big, strong male tigers think of others before themselves.
G.However, those characteristics are not generally associated with real tigers.
