This message is to inform all the children that Santa’s post office in Himmelpfort, Germany, is open to receive your holiday wishes. That means you can mail your letters to Santa about 6 weeks sooner than that last year. Santa knows you’ve been good and wants to make sure he and his helpers receive your wish list earlier.
Eight post offices are organized across Germany to answer all the letters children send. This year they plan to receive over 250,000 letters. Though the letters fly from over 80 different countries, Santa and his helpers can understand and make sure to answer all the letters.
In 1984, two children from Berlin sent their wish lists to Himmelpfort after spending their vacation there. Their letters were answered by postal employees and later Himmelpfort increased its helpers to meet the needs of increased mail traffic. Year after year, Santa and his crew use an eco-friendly powered vehicle to collect the thousands of letters they receive from young boys and girls. The great news for this year is that if you come to the beautiful town of Himmelpfort, you can drop off your letter and visit Santa in person, from Tuesdays to Thursdays until Christmas Eve.
Santa does not currently have an e-mail, Twitter or a Facebook account. He believes in old-fashioned communication. So get out your paper and write your wish list. Just make sure your letter is clear so you can receive an official response. Send your letters to
Santa

The celebration begins on October 21st, with Dhanteras. For those who love shopping, this is the best day of the celebration. That’s because in addition to honoring Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, the day is also considered lucky to buy everything—from gold and silver ornaments (装饰品) to new clothes.
The following day is Kali Chaudas, or Narak Chaturdashi. For some Indians it is celebrated with good food and fireworks. For others, it is the time to drive out bad spirits from homes. No matter how it is celebrated, everyone’s mind is already focused (集中) on the big day that comes after—Diwali!
Diwali begins with a visit to temples where prayers (祷告) will be given. Then families and friends get together and celebrate by exchanging gifts and sweets. Those who missed the opportunity to buy goods on Dhanteras can make up for it on this equally lucky day. In the evening, households light up their homes with oil lamps and prepare delicious Indian food. Then starts the real fun—fireworks! What makes the displays exciting is that everyone gets to create his/her own show by lighting up their favorite fireworks.
For Indians, Diwali also marks the end of the year. They will celebrate the first day of the New Year the following day.
The final day of the festival honors the relationships between brothers and sisters and is celebrated with more special food and prayers.
For kids, Diwali is like Christmas, except earlier. They get a week’s vacation from school! It is no wonder that most kids consider Diwali the best festival of all.

Those "holidays", like National Onion Ring Day, have become very popular across the United States. They give people a chance to enjoy something they might not eat normally. Traditional food holidays also give restaurants and other businesses a chance to advertise their things.
But where did these American "holidays" come from? Many are the invention of an Alabama man, John-Bryan Hopkins. He writes about food for his website Foodimentary. com. Hopkins told Times magazine that when he began his site in 2006, there were only 175 "holidays." "I filled in the rest," he said.
The National Day Calendar has a list of all the different food and non-food related "holidays". In the past the website used to let anyone pay to create their own day—for a price. But now, the site only accepts requests from businesses in order to make more money.
While some food "holidays" are indeed made-up, many have their history. For example, National Beer Day on April 7marks the end of a US ban on the sale of beer drinks. The ban lasted from 1920 until 1933.
The Salvation Army, a Christian group, began to celebrate US National Doughnut Day on June l, 1938. It was meant to honor women who served soldiers doughnuts during World War I.
But not everyone likes food holidays. Bethany Jean Clement is a food writer for the Seattle Times newspaper. She wrote, "I get that some people might like celebrating National Doughnut Day. However, you really can have a doughnut any day you want, so there's no need to celebrate it!"
1. The function of the celebrations of some kind of food is to ________.A.inspire people to expand their range of choices for food |
