I recently had dinner with someone who told me that one of his best friends had been killed in a private plane crash, and something happened at the memorial service that he'll never forget. He shared the story with me.
At the memorial service, his friend's wife walked to the platform to speak to the gathering. She said a friend had asked her the best memory she had of their life together. At the moment, she had been too sad to answer, but she had thought about it since and wanted to answer the question.
They were in their late forties when he died, and she began talking about a time in their life almost twenty years earlier. She had quit her job to obtain her master's degree, and her husband never hesitated in his support.
He held down his own job and also did the cooking, cleaning, and other housework while she studied for her degree.
One time they both stayed up all night. She was finishing her paper, and he was preparing for an important business meeting. That morning, she walked out of her study, leaned against the door by the stairs, looked at her husband downstairs and just thought about how much she loved him. She knew how important this meeting was to his future, and she was feeling guilty that she didn't even have time to make his breakfast. He took his briefcase and hurried out. She heard the garage door open and close, but much to her surprise, she heard it open again about thirty seconds later. From above, she watched her husband dash into the house and walk over to the forgotten coffee table. Marking the surface of it with his finger through the dust with the words "I love you", then he raced back to his car.
The new widow then looked out at her audience and said, "John and I had a wonderful life together. We have been around the world several times. We've had everything money can buy. . . but nothing comes close to that moment."
Hearing this, I was deeply moved. "Love makes life worthwhile. "

As she was driving, Angela found they were on a part of road that was under construction. The long journey had begun to bother Peter, who started crying. Angela inserted a nursery rhyme CD into the stereo and hoped it would help.
The warm sun and the soft music had a relaxing effect. In no time, both children became quiet. Angela’s eyes close too, for just a few seconds.
When Lexi suddenly woke up, she found it was dark. Airbags obscured all the windows. Lexi’s neck hurt and Peter was crying loudly. She told herself to get out of the car, but when she pulled the handle, the door was stuck. Turning onto her side, Lexi kicked at the door until it flopped (猛地打开) open and the car was filled with sunlight.
That’s when Lexi spotted her mother in the front seat. She tried to wake her up but Angela didn’t respond. Lexi looked over the side of the SUV and saw they were on a steep hill. It was only a large tree that kept the car from rolling down.
Her shoes had come off, but Lexi felt no pain as she climbed over glass, rocks, and pine needles up the embankment (路堤) to the highway her mother had driven off.
A driver, Jeremy, was travelling on the highway when he saw a tiny child jumping up and down, waving her arms. He pulled over. “Help!” Lexi cried out. “My mom needs help!” Jeremy looked up and down the tree-lined road but saw nobody. The barefoot child pointed to the destroyed SUV downhill. The energy around the house was always positive (积极的), mostly thanks to my father who made sure that his kids appreciated their mother. We would clean the house, and Mum got breakfast in bed in the morning and didn’t have to lift a finger all day. And in the evening, we went to a restaurant for a traditional Mother’s Day dinner.
What I learned from my father over the years, was that no matter what, he always put my mother before himself. He absolutely loved her and never let her forget that. And from my parents, I learned a thing or two about how to love.
I maintain (保持) my father’s Mother’s Day tradition with my wife. Growing up, I learned that showing affection to the woman you love or who gave birth to you is an important part of life. You see, it goes both ways, and the love you have for your mother comes back to you again and again.
Believing that and feeling it when you can may keep you from being lonely, even if your mum isn’t close by or has passed away. There are a number of us who no longer have a mother in our lives, and truth be told, there are often times when I wish my mum were still here to comfort me. So instead, I remember the times she did just that. It makes me smile, and somehow, those memories of a more simple and loving life give me the comfort I’m looking for.
My wife’s mother is still around, however, and it’s great to have that “mother energy” in my life still. Having this relationship with my mother-in-law is nice because it gives me someone to be there for on Mother’s Day, and any other day of the year.
If you are mum-less, you too should find a deserving woman in your life and celebrate Mother’s Day with her. If you don’t know anyone, there are plenty of lonely mums in rest homes who would enjoy your company for a couple of hours. The visit will make both of your days, and perhaps your lives, a little bit better.

It all started in 2007, Prisca Allou was a music student. A music producer came to see her. He said he wanted to make an all-female ensemble to keep a promise to his late mother.
Allou got on board and was charged with recruiting (招募) other members. “It wasn’t easy at first. Some parents were against it. You know, in Africa, the place of women is often seen as being either in an office or at home. That was the fixed image.” Allou spread the word and took out ads in local papers. Most of the girls she found were not professional players. “I just played some tamtam. I learned to play drums when I joined Bella Mondo.” The girls spent the next four years learning to play their instruments. Many gave up along the way, but eight of them soldiered on with Allou, and Bella Mondo was founded.
The band plays original songs and covers. Their music spans a wide range of styles: funk, reggae, pop music. They released their first album in 2013... and have performed in Paris, Dakar, Cotonou and, of course, here at home in Abidjan.
You can see them nearly every Thursday at this bar, the same place that gave the band its start years ago. “Oh yes, I was surprised at first. A woman singing, you see that every day, but an entire band, playing all the instruments and everything? It was extraordinary. I was dumbstruck. Bella Mondo is a great band.” The women are now working on their second album.

That day, we found out the government was sending over 100 Canadians citizens who were aboard the Diamond Princess, an infected cruise ship, to a hotel here for a 14-day quarantine. Suddenly, things got very real. As a nurse in the emergency department at Cornwall Community Hospital, I’d be treating any passengers with the virus. I didn't even have time to fully absorb the news—I just grabbed my scrubs (手术衣)and sprang into action.
There are times when it feels like the whole department is on fire. There are moments when we have multiple critical patients hanging in the balance, incoming trauma (创伤)patients, and an overflowing waiting room. After all, in the ER (emergency room), we're still treating car accident injuries, heart attacks, strokes—anything you can think of, and a dozen things you can't. And it's all complicated by this virus.
I’ve been a nurse since 1994, so I’ve helped prepare for my fair share of outbreaks. I've worked through the rise of Ebola, H1N1, and SARS. But COVID-19 is a sneaky virus. This outbreak is scarier because patients can spread the virus while symptom-free. With SARS, it was clearer who was infected. With COVID-19, we have fewer clues that someone might be a carrier.
I felt so bad for the first cruise ship patients we treated—we were the first people they'd seen in a while, and our equipment made us look like aliens? But they were very kind and patient. They were just eager to get home. Luckily, they didn't have the virus. In the end, we prevented disaster.
I don't think we've yet seen the full extent of this situation. However, I believe my hospital will get through this and we will eventually win the battle.
