One day I was home alone doing two of my favorite things: Eating a huge plate of spaghetti and meatballs and reading. At the time, my family had a pet bird, a big white cockatoo named Luke. He was free to leave his perch (栖木)and fly around inside the house. Luke enjoyed “talking” to people, but he wasn’t trained to use real words.
As I was reading and eating, Luke was talking to me, but I was lost in my book. So Luke decided to get closer. He flew from his perch, and before I knew it, he’d landed right on top of my spaghetti and meatballs!
I was so surprised that I didn’t even have time to think. My reaction was the same as yours would be: I shooed (发出嘘声赶走)him off my food! This wouldn’t have been so bad except for one thing: When Luke had landed on my plate, he had grabbed (抓住)my spaghetti with both feet. So when Luke took off again, the spaghetti-still in his feet-went flying everywhere, landing on my shirt and hitting me in the face. Red sauce splattered (泼溅)up the wall and onto the ceiling. As I pulled noodles out of my hair, Luke flew back to his perch, dropping spaghetti sauce all the way.
He wasn’t hurt, except for his dignity-the sauce in his beautiful white feathers turned him orange for several weeks. So next time if you find a spy novel at the library with red, spots on two pages near the middle, you’ll know that I’ve read that book ,too!

I got my first real job when I was ten. My dad, Benjamin, injured his back working in a cardboard - box factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr. Ben's Coiffure.
The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m. To pick up trash, Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower.Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand. It took two to three hours to clean the lot. I'd s1eep in the car on-the way home. I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime, I acquired' discipline and a strong work morality, and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life's competing interests—in my case, school, homework and a job. This really’ helped during my senior year of high school, when l worked 40 hours a week flipping hamburgers, at a fast – food joint while taking a full load of college - prep courses. The hard work paid off . I attended the U.S. Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degree in law and business from Harvard. Later, I joined a big Los Agnates law firm and was elected to the California state assembly.

One day the girl left the door to the cage open accidentally. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. So as he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him. Suddenly, she felt the bird go weak, so she opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. It was her desperate love that had killed him.
She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his strong desire—needing to fly into the clear, blue sky. Unwillingly, she lifted him from the cage and threw him softly into the air. The lucky bird circled once, twice, three times.
The girl watched delightedly at the bird. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. What she wanted to see was that the bird could fly happily. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest tune that she had ever heard.

It’s a picture of me from the late 1970s on a bench in London’s Victoria Station, my head resting against a wall, eyes closed with tiredness, and clothes messed up. I used to love that shot taken by my wife. It was evidence of my leisure time, of travel, of interruption from the office: miles covered, sights seen, train stations raced through, and goals achieved.
However, as I left work to hit the vacation road this summer, I took along something extra. This traveling companion had a habit of ruining trips with feelings of guilt — the guilt that came from attempting to vacation with work in mind.
The conflict between the time we want off and the guilt we feel when we actually give in to leisure is a long-running battle that has gone too far, driven by an over-scheduling enthusiasm. It has made many feel as if their free moments are a form of truancy. It’s hard to take it easy when you’ve been programmed not to. We have been taught for generations that work is the only goal. Time that is unfilled is bad, we are led to believe, and unplanned enjoyment should be avoided. This is stressed today by a workplace culture that wants you to believe that advancement depends on your staying on the job.
Research now shows, however, that leisure time can do something job advancement and money can’t. Leisure activities increase your desire to work; leadership skills, your sense of awareness and your ability to change. Free time also promotes a positive mood and sense of well-being, because it develops self-worth. Deep down, everyone knows we need time off to make our lives better.
On holiday, using your productive output as a measure of yourself doesn’t work. This is because a vacation isn’t about output; it’s about input — exploring, learning, reflecting. The magic of a holiday is in the experience itself. This is the same as life satisfaction; it can’t be measured, only felt. The best part of a vacation isn’t going somewhere else; it’s being where you are, fully involved in the experience.
1. Why does the author look at that photo from time to time?A.It brings back his memory of leisure travel. | B.It describes his tired appearance on vacation. |
C.It gives evidence of his running away from work. | D.It records a life goal achieved during his holiday. |
A.The tight schedule. | B.Not staying on the job. |
C.The unplanned journey. | D.Not reaching the expected goal. |
A.It promotes job advancement. | B.It improves your productive output. |
C.It is good for your personal development. | D.It helps you see your goals in life more clearly. |
A.Reflect on their work. | B.Avoid unplanned activities. |
C.Enjoy the experience of travelling. | D.Ignore job advancement and money. |

The problem is that unlike my wife who only buys the necessities, I buy like there is going to be natural disaster and we are planning for no tomorrow.
One day, when 1 arrived at home, I carried every single bag from the car to the kitchen in one go. I should have known it would be unachievable but I thought the more I could do on this trip, the fewer trips I would have to make.
As a competitive person, I wanted to do everything in one trip because in my mind, it’s more productive. As you can imagine, it ended in disaster. Two of the bags ended up being crushed(压变形) with a loaf of bread and broken eggs inside.
It reminded me of my time as a head teacher. Every evening, my teachers would walk past my office on the way to the car park with their arms full of things, unable to even give a quick wave out of fear of dropping something.
Like most schools, it isn’t uncommon for my teachers to fit another day’s work in during the evening. In schools, we have this crazy idea that our performance is often measured by how many programs we can carry out, how long we are at school and what time we sit up working until.
Now, it’s too hard to say ‘no’ with the increasing pressure and expectation placed on us. But what I’m going to say is that unlike when I carried every single bag from the car in one hit, maybe we should be better off putting some things down and doing the job properly.
Whether you’re a head teacher or a classroom teacher, it’s a time reminder that we should pay attention to how effective we are, not how much we can do. Maybe I should have taken my own advice and my family would have been able to enjoy their eggs and bread.
