There were two men who occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain (排除)the liquids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours every day. They spoke about their wives and families and their jobs. And every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened by all the activity and color of the outside world.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room closed his eyes and imagined the beautiful scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window described it. Unexpectedly, a strange thought entered his head: Why could he look out of the window? Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem fair.

As the thought developed, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy turned into hate and soon turned him sour. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window and that thought now controlled his life.

Catherine was a young girl. From an earlier age, her parents taught her to be kind-hearted, and she always was. And she lived a happy life in a warm family. Unluckily, one day her father had an accident. His right leg was hurt badly and needed an expensive operation.

Her family couldn’t afford to pay for it. Although their friends and relatives all tried their best to offer help but it was far from enough. So the operation was delayed and they were unsure what to do next.

One day, walking down the street to a bookstore nearby, Catherine noticed an old man trying hard to climb the steps to a nearby park. The old man with Alzheimer’s disease left home several days ago and ended up wandering around the streets while his son, Dr. White, a doctor of the City Hospital, had been trying to find him but in vain.

“He can’t climb the steps. He looks so weak and tired,” Catherine said to herself. Without hesitation, she ran over to him.

“Sir, let me help you!” she said, warm-hearted.

The man made no response. Then Catherine came closer to him and repeated it. Slowly raising his head, the man looked at her, surprised. Catherine gave him a smile and then helped him climb the steps, with her hands supporting his. “Your hands are shaking!” Catherine said anxiously. “Are you okay?”

“I’m so hungry,” he murmured in a low voice. “I want to walk…to the park for…a rest, and I want to find...something…to eat.” After helping him sit on a park bench, Catherine rushed home and returned with some food, only to find that the man was lying on the ground, fainted and senseless. “Sir, please wake up!” she cried in anxiety. The man didn’t respond. “What should I do?” she wondered eagerly.

When I was four, my seven-year-old brother received a baseball mitt (手套) for his birthday. Every night, as we went to sleep, I’d listen to him throwing a ball into the mitt over and over to soften the leather. I wanted a mitt so much that I almost cried. But, back then, girls didn’t play sports.

Twenty-six years had passed. Now a thirty-year-old mother of three, I happened to see a notice in my local paper: “Women’s Slow-Pitch Softball League opens soon. Anyone who is interested can sign up at the recreation center.” I cut it out and set it on the kitchen counter. Could I? Was it even possible to think about playing baseball, a game I’d never actually played but had dreamed of playing my entire life? But I’d certainly watched enough games to know how it was played.

I looked at that notice on my counter every day. I thought of a thousand reasons I couldn’t play. I was too old. I had three little ones to watch. I could never be good enough. But the idea of playing baseball stuck in my head and wouldn’t go away. Finally, I gathered up my courage and signed up at the recreation center.

Since I wasn’t on a team, they told me I’d be assigned to one. And I was made to practice running bases. I never got a chance to bat or play on the field. I just ran the bases all night. Every week, I showed up for practice. But every game, I spent the night sitting on the bench. My husband asked why I didn’t just forget about it, and I told him that if I gave up, I’d never get a chance.

During the last game of the season, I finally had a chance to go to center field. I had to borrow a mitt and I used it to catch an impossibly high ball, winning the game for us. The coach looked surprised. It never occurred to him that I might be able to play.

If you ask me whether you should say yes to walk your neighbor’s dog, my answer would be a definite “Yes”, as long you do one thing I didn’t do when I helped out with my neighbor’s dog. Here’s what I meant. You don’t need to ask your neighbor lots of questions about that particular dog, but just be patient to ask one very important question. Here is why.

My friend Ollie and I have played with Rascal since he was a puppy, so when Mrs. Gonzales asked if we’d like to take him to the park once in a while, we can’t wait to says, “When can we start?” “How about this Saturday at 3: 00?”she suggested.

When Saturday rolled around, Ollie and I were there to pick up Rascal at 3: 00 on time. “Rascal will be so happy to play in the park with you!” Mrs. Gonzales said. “If I’m still out grocery shopping when you return, just let yourselves in with this spare key. I’ll be home a little while later.”

“Also, why do you think I named him Rascal? If there’s trouble, such as puddles, this guy is guaranteed to find it. And also the commands that you should ” When we realized that Mrs. Gonzales had lots of “alsos”, we interrupted her and ran away in the blink of an eye.

Not long after we arrived at the park, Rascal found a giant puddle and jumped into it and rolled around until every square inch of his furry body was dripping with mud. “Ugh! silly puppy, you’re the muddiest dog in the universes!” I said. Ollie said we should take   him back home so he can get washed up.

But when we got to Mrs. Gonzales’s house, she didn’t answer the doorbell. “ She must still be out grocery shopping,” I said. “How about we use the garden tube to clean him? ” Ollie suggested. “ Good idea!” I said, putting Mrs. Gonzales’s key into the lock. “I’ll go inside and get a towel to dry him off.”
