There were two men who occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain (排除)the liquids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours every day. They spoke about their wives and families and their jobs. And every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened by all the activity and color of the outside world.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room closed his eyes and imagined the beautiful scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window described it. Unexpectedly, a strange thought entered his head: Why could he look out of the window? Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem fair.
As the thought developed, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy turned into hate and soon turned him sour. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window and that thought now controlled his life.

“I’m so hungry,” he murmured in a low voice. “I want to walk…to the park for…a rest, and I want to find...something…to eat.” After helping him sit on a park bench, Catherine rushed home and returned with some food, only to find that the man was lying on the ground, fainted and senseless. “Sir, please wake up!” she cried in anxiety. The man didn’t respond. “What should I do?” she wondered eagerly.

When I was four, my seven-year-old brother received a baseball mitt (手套) for his birthday. Every night, as we went to sleep, I’d listen to him throwing a ball into the mitt over and over to soften the leather. I wanted a mitt so much that I almost cried. But, back then, girls didn’t play sports.

Was it even possible to think about playing baseball, a game I’d never actually played but had dreamed of playing my entire life? But I’d certainly watched enough games to know how it was played.
I looked at that notice on my counter every day. I thought of a thousand reasons I couldn’t play. I was too old. I had three little ones to watch. I could never be good enough. But the idea of playing baseball stuck in my head and wouldn’t go away. Finally, I gathered up my courage and signed up at the recreation center.
Since I wasn’t on a team, they told me I’d be assigned to one. And I was made to practice running bases. I never got a chance to bat or play on the field. I just ran the bases all night. Every week, I showed up for practice. But every game, I spent the night sitting on the bench. My husband asked why I didn’t just forget about it, and I told him that if I gave up, I’d never get a chance.
During the last game of the season, I finally had a chance to go to center field. I had to borrow a mitt and I used it to catch an impossibly high ball, winning the game for us. The coach looked surprised. It never occurred to him that I might be able to play.

My old professor’s death sentence came in the summer of 1994. Doctors guessed he had two years left. Morrie knew it was less. But my old professor had made a great decision, one he began to construct the day when he came out of the doctor’s office with a knife hanging over his head. “Do I give up, or do I make the best of my time left? ” He had asked himself. He would not be ashamed of dying. Instead, he would make death his final project, the center point of days.
The last class of my old professor’s life had only one student. I was the student. The last class took place once a week in his house, by a window in the study, The class met on Tuesdays. It began after breakfast. The subject was The Meaning of Life. It was taught from experience. No grades were given, but there were oral exams each week. You were expected to respond to questions, and you were expected to ask questions of your own. You were also required to perform physical tasks now and then, such as lifting the professor’ s head to a comfortable spot on the pillow or placing his glasses on the bridge of his nose. Kissing him good-bye earned you extra credit. No books were required, yet many topics were covered, including love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and, finally, death.
I look back sometimes at the person I was before I rediscovered my old professor. I want to talk to that person. I want to tell him what to look out for, what mistakes to avoid. I want to tell him to be more open, to ignore the tricks of advertised values, to pay attention when your loved ones are speaking, as if it were the last time you might hear them. Mostly I want to tell that person to get on an airplane and visit a gentle old man in West Newton, Massachusetts sooner rather than later, before that old man gets sick and loses his ability to dance. I know I cannot do this. None of us can undo what we’ve done, or relive a life already recorded. But if Professor Morris Schwartz taught me anything at all, it was this: there is no such thing as“ too late”in life. He was changing until the day he said good-bye.
