Today we're sending Sally away for a week of summer camp. She never actually asked to go. It was all my idea to sign up(报名).She's nearly 12,and I notice that I'm with my child nearly 24 hours a day.

Living on a farm without any neighbors,I've chosen a life that is quieter than a typical family's. But rather than longing for space away from me,Sally has become increasingly dependent on me.

What frightens me most is that she has become a "mini-me". She follows my hobbies,my dreams and my opinions. And that's why I pulled her to the summer camp,a nearby wilderness camp called Hawk Circle.

After we ate,we drove to Hawk Circle. Once there,we got a tour of the grounds and were introduced to Sally's fellow campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand and with fear in her eyes trying to pick up the courage to join in a game of soccer.

"I need you for a few more minutes,"she told me,holding my hand tightly(紧紧地).

I pulled her away and walked up to one of the camp workers. "Excuse me,"I said loudly." I'd like to introduce my daughter to you. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids. "He came over to talk to Sally, and I kissed on her cheek and then my husband and I disappeared before Sally realized we were gone.

It was not until we drove home that I finally felt it. A piece of my soul had been taken from my body. I began to shake. Tears streamed down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward.

When we arrived home,I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I want Sally to have a chance to find herself out of my shadow. I don't want to see only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. After 12 years of constantly being together,I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.

【推荐1】During my elementary school years, I used to compare(比较) my mom with my best friend Tiffany’s mom.

Tiffany’s mom always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable clothes and favorite food. Her mom allowed her to do anything she liked. I really admired Tiffany. My mom didn’t give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself. I was annoyed with her.

Whenever I didn’t get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, Tiffany’s mom would give her that! I wish she were my mom. Every time, my mom would calmly say “Poor Tiffany”. I couldn’t understand her. “She shouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tiffany!” I thought. “She should be feeling sorry for me.”

One day, I couldn’t help saying to Mom, “Poor Tiffany? Lucky Tiffany! She gets everything she wants! Why do you feel sorry for her?” I burst out crying.

My mom sat down next to me and said softly. “Yes, I do feel sorry for her. I have been teaching you a lesson that she will never be taught.”

I looked up at her. “What are you talking about?”

Mom said with care, “One day she will really want something. Maybe she’ll find out that she can’t have it. Her mother won’t always be around to give her money, and what’s more, money can’t buy everything.”

She continued, “I have taught you valuable lessons by not giving you everything you want. You’ll know how to look for bargains(便宜货) and save money, but she won’t. You’ll understand that you need to work hard to get the things that you want but she won’t. When Tiffany is a grown woman, she’ll wake up one day and she will be wishing that she had a mom like the one you’ve got. Life lessons are more important than modern clothes and delicious food.”

It took some time, but I eventually understood my mom’s words. Now I am a happy and successful woman.

【推荐2】Sally Donovan is cooking when a paper plane flies across the kitchen and lands at her feet. She picks it up, unfolds it and finds a child’s sketch (素描) of a tear-stained face with a speech bubble saying: “I’m sorry I was naughty—I’m a bad person.”
Sally, 42, draws a big smiley face on the back of the paper with “I love you, Rose, and we’re always going to look after you.” Then she folds it up and launches the plane back into the living room where her nine-year-old daughter is watching TV with brother Jamie, 13 and dad Rod, 40.
Jamie often makes pictures for his parents too—like the one showing a swift river with them on one side and him trapped on the other side.
It’s one of the many unusual ways that Sally and Rob have learned to communicate emotionally with their abused children in an astonishing eight-year journey of hope, healing and love.
Jamie was just four and half—sister Rose one when they were adopted by the Donovans in 2005. The youngsters had been taken from their natural mother and placed in foster care after a series of cruelty and neglect. They were left alone, hungry, and witnessed home violence on a regular basis.
Sally and Rob spent three years trying for a baby before deciding to adopt, and were well aware of the youngsters' poor background. But they were still unprepared for raising a child permanently scared by abuse or the lack of support on offer.
But now Sally has written a brilliant and heart-touching account of their family struggle in a book called “No Matter What”.   Sally said: “These kids come to you with a story that what happened to them was their fault—because they are bad and unlovable. To show them they are loveable and none of it was their fault takes a lot of time. They both still say “I’m bad”. Jamie is less stuck on it now but whenever life deals him a knock, he will fall back into ‘that happened because I am stupid, I’m rubbish, I’m bad’.”
Sally’s book is humorous, heart-touching and so wildly honest that academics, charity bosses, parents and adoptees are praising it as a major contribution to child welfare work.
1. Sally and Rob adopted the two children mainly because ____.
A.they knew the children’s background very well
B.they wanted to help the children out of trouble
C.they couldn’t have children of their own
D.they couldn’t bear the cruelty done to the children
2. Why did the two adopted children still say “I’m bad” ?
A.They know clearly they are not lovable enough.
B.They often put the situation in an embarrassment.
C.What they suffered rooted deep in their minds.
D.They are honest of what they have done.
3. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Rose was a baby when adopted by Sally and Rob.
B.Sally has written a book about how to adopt children.
C.Jamie still blames himself for whatever happens to him.
D.There is still a long way to go for helping the children out.

【推荐3】Flower Power

When her grandmother’s health began to worsen last autumn, Mary would make the drive from Washington, DC to Winchester, VA every few days.

She hated highway driving, finding it ugly and boring. She preferred to take winding country roads to her grandmother’s hospital. When she drove through the rocky town of Harpers Ferry, the beauty of the rough waters was always appealing to her.

Toward the end of her journey, Mary had to get on highway 81. It was here that she discovered a surprising bit of beauty during one of her trips. Along the shoulder of the highway, there was a long stretch of wild flowers. They were thin and delicate and purple, and moved back and forth in the wind as if whispering poems to each other.

The first time she saw the flowers, Mary was seized by an uncontrollable urge to pull over on the highway and pull a bunch from the soil. She carried them into her grandmother’s room when she arrived at the hospital and placed them in a vase by her bed.

For a moment her grandmother seemed more lucid(清醒的)than usual. She thanked Mary for the flowers, commented on their beauty and asked where she had gotten them. Mary was overjoyed by the ability of the flowers to wake something up inside her sick grandmother.
